WHAT CAUSES CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME?
General Theories for Chronic Fatigue Causes
Theories abound about the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome. Many physicians still doubt that CFS is an actual disease but believe rather that it is a component of a psychological disorder or a symptom of other problems, similar to anemia and high blood pressure. Indeed, no primary cause has been found that explains all cases of CFS. And, there are no consistent biologic factors that would allow objective measures, such as blood tests or brain scans, to definitively diagnose CFS.
Convergence of Factors. A number of experts believe that CFS develops from a convergence of conditions that may include the following:
  • Genetic factors.
    Brain abnormalities.
    A hyper-reactive immune system.
    Viral or other infectious agents.
    Psychiatric or emotional conditions.
For example, the majority of patients report some preceding moderate to serious physical illness (e.g., a chronic viral infection) or emotional event (e.g., episode of depression). Some experts theorize that such events, alone or in combination, may interact with certain neurologic and genetic abnormalities to trigger the event. Still, it is not clear what sequence of events actually leads to the fatigue and other prominent symptoms of this disorder. Nor is there any specific brain or nervous system abnormality that experts can point to with assurance. Research published in 2001 indicates that CFS is more common among identical twins (who share the same genes) than fraternal twins (who share only some genes). Inheritance, then, may play a role in roughly 30% to 50% of cases, similar to the influence thought to occur in depression or alcoholism, although specific genes have not yet been identified.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
WHAT IS CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME AND ITS SYMPTOMS?
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also sometimes called immune dysfunction syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis (in Europe), is not a new disorder. In the 19th century the term neurasthenia, or nervous exhaustion, was applied to symptoms resembling CFS. In the 1930s through the 1950s outbreaks of disease marked by prolonged fatigue were reported in the United States and many other countries. Beginning in the early to mid-1980s interest in chronic fatigue syndrome was revived by reports in America and other countries of various outbreaks of long-term debilitating fatigue.
Fatigue that lasts for more than six months, impairs normal activities, and has no identifiable medical or psychological problems to account for it is referred to as unexplained chronic fatigue. These symptoms can be further categorized as follows:
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). A number of criteria must be met in order for a patient's symptoms to be described as CFS. [For a list

The Chronic Syndrome Support Association, Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. It was founded in 1997 in order to educate the general population and health-care professionals who lack current knowledge of the research being done, and potential research that needs to be done, on these serious, yet invisible, Chronic Immunological and Neurological Disorders (CIND) , which include Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), Multiple Chemical Sensitivities Syndrome (MCS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME, the term used in most of the world) / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, the term used in the United States), Chronic Myofascial Pain (CMP), Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) and related illnesses. It is our goal to promote awareness of these illnesses, and in the process we hope to contribute to the growing body of knowledge about them. Learn more about these 'invisible' illnesses in our pamphlet , which can be downloaded in its actual format with Adobe Reader. If you believe you may have one of these illnesses, seek the assistance of a supportive health-care professional who is familiar with CIND and their treatments.

Chronic Fatigue Illnesses Prof. Garth L. Nicolson Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia Syndrome and Other Fatigue Conditions Recent reports and publications indicate that in addition to mycoplasmal infections, CFS/ME and FMS patients have other chronic infections caused by other intracellular bacteria and viruses. For example, patients with Lyme Disease, caused by intracellular Borrelia infections, have been diagnosed with CFS/ME. Also, CFS/ME and FMS patients can have intracellular Chlamydia species infections. These patients can also have infections by other bacteria that enter their bodies through 'leaky gut' problems. Chronically ill patients often have inflammatory bowel syndrome and other gut problems, and this can allow pathogenic bacteria to enter their systems. CHRONIC FATIGUE IMMUNE DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME (CFIDS) Also Referred to as:
YEAST SYNDROME or YEAST RELATED ILLNESS
    By Elmer M. Cranton, M.D.
Terminology varies between different schools of medicine and differing theories of cause. The acronym "CFIDS" will be used in this article to refer to a clinical syndrome which can cross the boundaries and involve, more or less, any of the below
INTRODUCTION A wide variety of symptoms, as listed above, of a seemingly unrelated nature affect widely diverse parts of the body and are postulated in this paper to be caused, at least in part, by overload of the immune system and immunologic dysfunction. Stressed-out and malfunctioning immunity is described as an important and correctable common denominator in all of the above conditions. Chronic fatigue and nervous tension are almost always present. The treatment plan described in this paper has been developed by the author over many years and has brought relief to hundreds of patients who had been diagnosed with the syndromes listed above. Benefits have often been dramatic and sometimes complete after attempts with many other therapies had failed.
