The M.E./Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Society of Victoria Inc. is a non-profit charitable organisation dedicated to serving the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Community in Victoria and Tasmania. The Society is run entirely by volunteers and relies on donations and membership fees to allow us to continue our valuable work. What is 'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome'? Don't be fooled by the name. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, also known as M.E. or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) is a serious and debilitating illness that can last for years, and sometimes for life. The latest research suggests that the symptoms of CFS may be caused - at least in part - by a continuing immune response to a real or perceived challenge. Symptoms of CFS include overwhelming exhaustion, both physical and cognitive, memory and concentration impairment, an intense 'flu like feeling, muscle pain, sleep disturbance, headaches, disturbance of balance and other symptoms. There is no effective treatment for CFS, so correct management of the illness plays an important role. This is where the Society can offer guidance. Also see our

  • What Is It? Chronic fatigue syndrome is a complicated illness characterized by at least six months of extreme fatigue that is not relieved by rest, and a group of additional symptoms that also are constant for at least six months. In many people with chronic fatigue syndrome, the disorder begins suddenly, often following a flulike infection or an episode of physical or psychological trauma, such as surgery, a traumatic accident or the death of a loved one. In other cases, chronic fatigue syndrome develops gradually. The illness lasts for many months or years, and only a small percentage of people recover full health.

      POTS and CFS
POTS has been proposed as a mechanism for symptoms of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in a series of adult patients. POTS and CFS may share a common pathophysiology particularly in the young . Recently, a review of patients with delayed orthostatic hypotension (delayed POTS) demonstrated a high degree of association with chronic fatigue. Our preliminary data have shown that POTS physiology underlies orthostatic intolerance in the large majority of adolescents with the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). In those patients we demonstrated loss of heart rate variability consistent with vagal withdrawal, increased blood pressure variability consistent with enhanced modulation of sympathetic tone, and impaired baroreflex with a phase shift causing wide blood pressure swings uncompensated by compensatory HR changes. Preliminary vascular data suggest that these autonomic findings are associated with changes in arterial and venous properties of the lower limbs during orthostasis causing fluid collection in excess of ordinary "pooling" observed in control patients.

CFS can be debilitating Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as M.E., is a condition with a diverse range of symptoms but particularly characterised by profound muscle fatigue after physical exertion.
Some doctors have been sceptical as to whether ME/CFS exists as a real disease or is "all in the mind". However, this controversy should have been effectively ended by a report from the Chief Medical Officer for England in 2002, which concluded that ME/CFS is a genuine and disabling condition. CFS and ME are also classified by the World Health Organisation as neurological disorders. In 2004, the Department of Health announced £8.5 million of ring-fenced funding for new specialist services to deal with ME/CFS. Fifty such services are now in the process of opening or are being developed. And the Medical Research Council has recognised that further research into the illness is urgently required. Who gets it?

Chronic fatigue syndrome more than being tired
By Eleni Berger CNN (CNN) Imagine getting only three or four hours of sleep a night for eight years. Then having a pain as severe as a toothache throughout the entire body at the same time. Add to that the feeling that memory is fading. That's what life can be like for people who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), says Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, an internist who specializes in treating this mysterious illness. "This is a serious disease that can destroy people's lives," says Teitelbaum, who directs the Annapolis Research Center for Effective Fibromyalgia and CFS Therapies in Annapolis, Maryland. He became interested in the illness after succumbing to it in medical school in 1975. "There was not even a name for it back then," recalls Teitelbaum, who says he battled the disease for years before being cured.

CFSResearch.org Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Introduction : Welcome to my Website on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ( CFS, CFIDS, M.E ) .
The site offers a large collection of FREE Research Publications on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ( CFS ) collected out of different medical journals.
The goal of this website is to build a large collection of Research articles on the subject freely available to CFS patients, Doctors and other people that would like to find out more about this mysterious disease. Indeed, I call it a mysterious disease because after over a decade, science still hasn't been able to establish the cause and offer a proper treatment. There even isn't a 100% reliable diagnostic marker that proves you have CFS, now CFS is still an exclusion of possible related illnesses with the same symptoms as we have.
Research for the cause and for a good diagnostic test is very poor, very little money is put into Research, especially Government Research is next to nothing.
I hope the near future will bring hope for the CFS patients and that scientists start working together instead of remaining in their own corner and share what they know.

from Dr. Poesnecker I realize that many, if not most of you have been told there is no effective treatment for your condition. That you must just "learn to live with it." Our experience has demonstrated otherwise. The underlying causes of these conditions are known and so also are effective treatments. While we have no magic cure, with the cooperation of the individual, we have been able to return thousands of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFIDS and Fibromyalgia patients to active productive lives by the methods we have developed and taught over the last forty-five years. We can also help you if you are ready to start living once again. Below you will find links to many articles describing the methods we use to help individuals successfully overcome these devastating and humiliating conditions. Once you have had an opportunity to puruse these, the next step on your road to recovery is to take an Adrenal Stress Index test (ASI) from DiagnosTech labs of Seattle, Washington. We have tried many other labs, but this is the only one whose results have been really useful in helping our patients. Concurrent with taking the ASI test you should be studying
