Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Overview
Chronic fatigue syndrome (also called CFS) is a disorder without a known cause, although CFS may be related to a previous infection. CFS is a state of chronic fatigue that exists without other explanation for 6 months or more and is accompanied by cognitive difficulties (problems with short-term memory or concentration). You may have CFS if you meet the following criteria:
  • If you have severe chronic fatigue for 6 months or longer and all other known conditions that could cause fatigue have been excluded by your health care provider
If you simultaneously have 4 or more of the following symptoms: significant problems with short-term memory or concentration, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, muscle pain, pain in several joints without swelling or redness, headaches that are different in pattern or severity from previous headaches, feeling tired and unrefreshed even after sleeping, and extreme tiredness lasting more than 24 hours after you exercise or exert yourself
Chronic fatigue syndrome affects tens of thousands of people. It occurs more commonly in females than in males. This condition occurs most commonly in young to middle-aged adults. People with CFS are often unable to perform normally at work and home because of their long-term fatigue and problems with short-term memory. This can lead to depression, but depression is not a cause of CFS.

The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Comprehensive Approach to Its Definition and Study
Abstract of the paper on a New Case Definition for CFS 1994
The complexities of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the methodologic problems associated with its study indicate the need for a comprehensive, systematic, and integrated approach to the evaluation, classification, and study of persons with this condition and other fatiguing illnesses. We propose a conceptual framework and a set of guidelines that provide such an approach. Our guidelines include recommendations for the clinical evaluation of fatigued persons, a revised case definition of the chronic fatigue syndrome, and a strategy for sub grouping fatigued persons in formal investigations.

A new theory by Prof Colchester published in the Lancet this week has surprisingly been given a major outing by the media.
Although laudably admitting there are obvious flaws in the 'other' theory Prof Colchester argues that the cause of BSE/vCJD lies in the human bones floated down rivers in India as part of Hindu funeral rites. These bones are salvaged from the rivers by poor Indian people who then may sell them on to animal feed companies.
Consider the following : One might expect there to be about 200 victims of sporadic cjd throughout all India in a year, a tiny fraction of the 100s of thousands who would die of all other causes .

Sixteen-year-old Samantha is always exhausted. For months she's had swollen glands and weakness. She has difficulty concentrating in school, frequently has headaches, and finds it hard to get out of bed most mornings. Although Samantha's parents suspect she's involved in too many activities, they have also begun to worry because her grades have plummeted and her symptoms have worsened. When Samantha and her parents visit the doctor to try to find out what's wrong, the doctor takes a detailed history of Samantha's symptoms, paying careful attention to how long they have been going on. After a full physical examination and several blood tests, it is determined that Samantha has a condition known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). What Is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a noncontagious disease that was first recognized as a physical illness in the 1980s and remains the subject of a great deal of controversy. Even now, as increasing numbers of people are being diagnosed with the disease, there are still many people inside and outside the health professions who doubt its existence or maintain that it's a psychological ailment. But several years of research have confirmed that CFS is indeed a physical illness - just one that's not fully understood. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that as many as half a million people in the United States have a CFS-like condition.

Magnesium is a must. The diets of all Americans are likely to be deficient........Even a mild deficiency causes sensitiveness to noise, nervousness, irritability, mental depression, confusion, twitching, trembling, apprehension, insomnia, muscle weakness and cramps in the toes, feet, legs, or fingers. Adelle Davis, writing in Let's Have Healthy Children Read my Magnesium (Mg) is a trace mineral that is known to be required for several hundred different functions in the body. A significant portion of the symptoms of many chronic disorders are identical to symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Studies show many people in the U.S. today do not consume the daily recommended amounts of Mg. A lack of this important nutrient may be a major factor in many common health problems in industrialized countries. Common conditions such as mitral valve prolapse, migraines, attention deficit disorder, fibromyalgia, asthma and allergies

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?
Having chronic fatigue syndrome , or CFS, means more than just getting tired. With the busy lives American women lead, we all get tired from time to time. But, the fatigue with CFS is extreme and overwhelming, and doesn't get better with bed rest. And, it is often made worse with physical or mental activity. This illness seems to happen all of a sudden - one day you may notice that you are very tired and can't manage your normal activities. Your energy level is lower and you often get tired for no reason. You may also feel weak and have muscle pain, difficulty focusing, or insomnia (not being able to sleep). After you engage in physical activity or exert yourself, you may feel tired for more than 24 hours. The extreme fatigue may then come and go, giving you times when your energy level is normal. Sometimes, though, the extreme tiredness never stops, leaving you feeling exhausted and depleted all the time. You notice that you can't get done in a day what you normally would have been able to, before having this condition. CFS is diagnosed only when other possible causes of the fatigue are ruled out, and the fatigue has lasted for at least 6 months. There are treatments to help a person cope with CFS, some of which include medication. Sometimes CFS goes away on its own or a person can have long periods of time, even years, without symptoms.

C hronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also referred to as chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome, is a disabling illness characterized by persistent fatigue accompanied by rheumatologic, cognitive, and infectious-appearing symptoms. Despite intense medical research, there is no known cause for CFS, but it appears to be a heterogeneous disorder which affects multiple systems, including hormonal, neurologic, and immunologic. Because there are no specific diagnostic tests or physical findings for CFS, diagnosis requires knowledge of possible symptoms and a method of exclusion. CFS is likely a spectrum of illnesses sharing a common pathogenesis with varying degrees of fatigue and associated symptoms. Other disorders, such as fibromyalgia, have overlapping symptoms with CFS, suggesting that both diseases may share common physiologic abnormalities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's criteria for diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome require the patient to present with severe fatigue lasting at least six consecutive months, have no definable organic disease, and experience associated physical symptoms.
