This occurs when the eyeball is too short or the cornea is too flat, and light rays entering the eye focus behind the retina rather than directly on it. Hyperopia is often present at birth, but sometimes, vision normalizes as the eyeball lengthens during the growth process. Young adults and children with mild to moderate cases of farsightedness often see close objects clearly because the lens is able to adjust or change its shape. This process is called

People with this condition have trouble seeing things that are close. This condition is the most common reason for reading glasses or bifocals. If this is the only vision problem an affected person has, he or she will be able to see far away objects without difficulty. In young people, the focusing power of the eye is strong. Many younger people with mild cases of this condition can overcome the problem by intentionally focusing harder. As people get older, the focusing power of the eye decreases as a natural part of aging. This is why most farsighted people need bifocals or reading glasses around age 40 to 50. What are the causes and risks of the condition?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new surgical device for the treatment of farsightedness. Conductive keratoplasty uses heat-causing radiofrequency waves that pass through a probe the size of a human hair to reshape the flattened cornea. Conductive keratoplasty is reported to be less invasive than laser surgery. However, the FDA stresses that the vision correction may be temporary, because vision can deteriorate for at least a year after surgery. According to the FDA, some visual regression is expected after any correction of farsightedness, but while the vision of patients who have had laser surgery usually stabilizes after three to six months, patients who choose conductive keratoplasty often lose, on average, another 11 percent of their vision in the year after surgery. Also, available data have not shown whether re-treatment is safe or effective.

08:42:29 AM (San Francisco)-Leading refractive surgeons discussed emerging surgical techniques in the treatment of farsightedness (hyperopia) and aging eye (presbyopia) in a news conference at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Eye M.D. Association. James J. Salz, MD, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Southern California, and a partner in Laser Vision Medical Associates, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, moderated the news conference. He provided an overview of the evolving approaches to hyperopia and presbyopia, and introduced the panelists. Samuel Masket, MD, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, Jules Stein Institute, UCLA School of Medicine, and a Trustee of the Academy, discussed "Refractive Lensectomy for the Correction of Hyperopia (HRL)." In this procedure, the natural lens is removed and is replaced with a plastic intraocular lens (IOL), which can be monofocal, monovision, or multifocal. This surgical technique is good for people with low hyperopia. In addition, patients with steep corneas, dry eye, or large pupils, who are not good candidates for LASIK, can undergo this procedure safely.

New Minimally Invasive Treatment for farsightedness Approved by the FDA Some 60 million Americans suffer from farsightedness and have difficulty reading
http://www.mssm.edu/ophth/ck_asbell.shtml
New Minimally Invasive Treatment for Farsightedness Approved by the FDA The FDA has approved CK (Conductive Keratoplasty), a new minimally invasive procedure, to correct hyperopia, or farsightedness. CK uses the controlled release of radiofrequency (RF) energy, instead of a laser, to reshape the cornea for the treatment of farsightedness. CK is the first alternative to laser for treating farsightedness. The procedure is also currently being tested for the treatment of presbyopia, the age-related progressive form of farsightedness experienced by most people over the age of 40. Some 60 million Americans suffer from farsightedness and have difficulty reading menus or a computer screen, or find themselves constantly repositioning reading material to find the right focus. Presently, Baby Boomers comprise the largest segment of the farsighted population, and many view the need for reading glasses as a sign of aging. Because it is performed without the cutting or removal of tissue, CK offers patients a safe, minimally invasive treatment for farsightedness. CK is performed using a small probe, thinner than a strand of hair, that releases radiofrequency energy. The probe is applied in a circular pattern on the outer cornea (front window of the eye) to shrink small areas of corneal tissue. This circular pattern creates a constrictive band (like the tightening of a belt), increasing the overall curvature of the cornea to treat farsightedness. The procedure, which takes about three minutes, is done in the doctor's office with only topical anesthesia (eye drops). No tissue is removed, no flap is made as in LASIK (Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis a refractive procedure that involves cutting the cornea), and the central cornea is left untouched.

Congress lacks farsightedness: PM New Delhi Nov. 20. Accusing the Congress of lacking "farsightedness," the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, today said the party should remain out of power for a "longer" period so that it could learn to behave as a responsible Opposition. Attacking the party at an election meeting in West Delhi, the Prime Minister said the Congress still felt that it was ruling the country. "The Congress has not learnt to remain out of power. They should remain out of power for a longer period so that it learns how to work as a responsible Opposition," he said. "The Congress does not have farsightedness," Mr. Vajpayee said adding that the Congress-ruled Delhi was still facing a number of problems such as scarcity of water, power, good roads and communication facilities. "Even after remaining in power for five years, roads in Delhi are in a bad shape. "I have been to so many capitals but when I come back here, I feel sad." The minimum needs of the people were not being fulfilled.
