What is Farsightedness?
Farsightedness is a condition where a person can see distant objects very well, but have difficulty seeing objects that are close. Objects that are near will appear blurry to people who have farsighted vision. Farsightedness is common. Farsightedness is also called hyperopia. What Causes Farsightedness? Farsightedness occurs when light rays entering the eye focus behind the retina, instead of directly on it. The eyeball of a farsighted person is shorter than the eyeball of a person with normal vision. Symptoms of Farsightedness? There are many symptoms. The most common symptoms are:
  • inability to see objects that are close to you headaches eyestrain squinting feelings of fatigue when performing work at close range.
Treatments for Farsightedness Farsightedness can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The glasses or contact lenses will change the way light rays bend into the eyes. Refractive surgery, such as LASIK or CK, is also a treatment option. Surgery may reduce or eliminate your need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

In a young person with severe hyperopia, or once presbyopia sets in around age 45, distant objects are seen more clearly than near objects. Hyperopia or Farsightedness
What is Hyperopia?
Hyperopia is a refractive error where people are able to see distant objects clearly but objects up close seem blurry. People with hyperopia tend to have eye strains, headaches from trouble reading, eye fatigue from focusing on objects up close. There are several treatments for hyperopia including eyeglasses contact lenses , and eye surgery
Causes of Hyperopia
Hyperopia occurs because the eyeball is shorter than normal. This causes the image to focus behind the retina rather that on it. People with hyperopia can see distant objects fine but performing task like reading, sewing, or typing on the computer can become a hassle.
Treatments for Hyperopia
People with hyperopia often squint when working with objects up close. This allows them to see better as a different amount of light is refracted. Like treatments for myopia , treatments for hyperopia are designed to refract a correct amount of light into the eyes through either corrective lenses or reshaping of the cornea through surgical and non-surgical methods. At a young age, depending on the degree of hyperopia, eyeglasses or contacts are usually the first option. They are usually worn only when working with objects that require close up focus. Refractive surgery like

Farsightedness
Introduction to Farsightedness About 1 in 4 people in the U.S. have hyperopia or farsightedness, but fortunately there are more ways to correct this eye disorder than ever before. People with hyperopia or farsightedness have difficulty focusing on objects close up, such as print in a book. More severe hyperopia would also cause problems with seeing objects in the distance clearly, such as highway signs. The occurrence of hyperopia increases with age; At least half of all persons over the age of 65 have some degree of farsightedness. What Causes It? Hyperopia is a refractive error, like astigmatism and nearsightedness (myopia). Having a refractive error means that light rays bend incorrectly into your eye to transmit images to the brain. Farsightedness occurs when light entering the eye focuses behind the retina, instead of directly on it. An abnormally flat cornea or short eye can cause the light to enter the eye this way. Hyperopia often runs in families. It is often present at birth; however, many children outgrow it.

Definition: Farsightedness is difficulty seeing objects which are nearby.
Alternative Names: Hyperopia
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Farsightedness is the result of the visual image being focused behind the retina rather than directly on it. It may be caused by the eyeball being too small or the focusing power being too weak. Farsightedness is often present from birth, but children can often tolerate moderate amounts without difficulty and most outgrow the condition. As aging occurs, glasses or contact lenses may be required to correct the vision. A family history of farsightedness is a risk factor.

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is the opposite of myopia. Distant objects are clear, and close-up objects appear blurry. This condition is a result of a eye that is too short or a cornea that lacks the necessary refractive power to focus images on the retina.
If you have hyperopia, images focus on a point beyond the retina. This unfocused image captured by the retina is then sent to the brain and processed as an unclear picture.

Overview
Farsightedness is caused when the eyeball is too short, the corneas is too flat, the lens inside the eye is too weak, or a combination of any of the three. In effect, the image is placed behind the retina. With aging, the lens becomes less flexible and cannot accommodate as well to close objects. This condition, called
presbyopia , accounts for the development of farsightedness after the age of 40. Risk factors that increase your chance of getting farsightedness include:
  • age 40 or older (presbyopia) family member with hyperopia esotropia (a form of strabismus, or crossed eyes

The procedure, approved in April by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is the first non-laser treatment for hyperopia, a condition in which people can see objects far away but have trouble focusing on those nearby. It is an outpatient surgery performed under local anesthesia in just a few minutes . Unlike laser treatments, which use light waves as an energy source, CK uses radiofrequency waves, a form of electromagnetic energy, to re-shape the peripheral cornea. The energy is similar in some respects to the microwaves that power CB radios and cell phones. CK employs a pen-shaped instrument with a tip as thin as a human hair that releases the radiofrequency energy. The tip is applied in a circular pattern on the outer layer of the front of the eyeball to shrink small areas of tissue. The result is a constrictive band of tissue, similar to a tightened belt, that increases the overall curvature of the cornea. "Nearly 95 percent of patients with low to moderate ranges of farsightedness achieve normal or near-normal vision after the procedure," says Terrence P. O'Brien, M.D., medical director of the Wilmer Laser Vision Center in Lutherville, Md.

Nearsightedness, Farsightedness and Astigmatism Nearsightedness (myopia) is a very common condition in which the light coming into the eye is not focused properly onto the retina, making it difficult to see objects far away. The condition is usually caused by an elongation of the eyeball that occurs over time. Farsightedness (hyperopia) is the opposite of myopia, and is usually caused by shortening of the eyeball. Astigmatism is an imperfection of the cornea preventing part of it from focusing light onto the retina. The result is a blurred area within an otherwise clear image. This problem may occur along with either myopia or hyperopia. These frequent conditions are termed "refractive errors." Diagnosis The common method of measuring vision loss is the Snellen Test Chart, the familiar rows of increasingly smaller letters. Wilmer ophthalmologists also diagnose a decline in vision using refraction and retinoscopy and, when necessary, automated computerized devices. Treatment Wilmer ophthalmologists prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses to compensate for most refractive errors. In addition, newer techniques actually change the curved shape of the cornea, causing it to focus light directly onto the retina, thus producing a clear image. The techniques performed at Wilmer include Automated Lamellar Keratectomy (ALK), Radial Keratotomy (RK), Excimer Laser Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK), and LASIK - a combination of ALK and excimer laser surgery currently undergoing investigation. Wilmer physicians participated in the development of the excimer laser, which they have used since 1990. With it, Wilmer physicians can remove a thin layer of the cornea to sculpt its shape to reduce or correct the refractive error. This new technique is approved for persons 18 years of age and older with specified types of nearsightedness.

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is a common refractive error. Approximately 25 per cent of the general population may be affected. Farsighted individuals see better in the distance than up close because the eye does not effectively focus light. Farsightedness is very common among elementary school-age children and a frequent cause of reading and learning difficulties Refractive errors such as hyperopia are commonly corrected by eyeglasses or contact lenses Refractive surgery is another possibility.
