Is it common to feel lightheaded during pregnancy?
It's not uncommon to occasionally feel lightheaded or dizzy when you're pregnant. During this time, your cardiovascular system undergoes dramatic changes: Your heart rate (pulse) goes up, your heart pumps more blood per minute, and the amount of blood in your body expands by an average of 40 to 45 percent. The capacity of your circulatory system also increases as blood flows to your enlarging uterus and placenta. In a normal pregnancy, your blood pressure goes down in the beginning, reaching its lowest point in the middle of your pregnancy, and then goes back to its normal level by the time you give birth. Most of the time, your cardiovascular and nervous systems are able to adjust appropriately to all these changes, but occasionally they don't, which can leave you feeling lightheaded or a bit dizzy. If you actually faint, though, it could be a sign that something is wrong, and you should call your practitioner.

    Tennessee Fainting Goat
The goats of this breed have a host of names: Myotonic, Tennessee Fainting, Tennessee Meat, Texas Wooden Leg, Stiff, Nervous, and Scare goats. The names refer to a breed characteristic known as myotonia congenita, a condition in which the muscle cells experience prolonged contraction when the goat is startled. The transitory stiffness associated with these contractions can cause the goat to fall down. This is not a true faint, but a muscular phenomenon unrelated to the nervous system. The degree of stiffness varies from goat to goat, with some showing a consistently stiff response and others exhibiting stiffness only rarely. The breed's history can be traced back to the 1880s. An itinerant farm laborer named John Tinsley came to central Tennessee, reputedly from Nova Scotia. Tinsley had with him four unusual, stiff goats. Goats of this type gradually became known across the region. They were less apt to climb fences and escape from pastures than other goats, and their muscular conformation and high reproductive rate were also valued. Farmers began to appreciate them, and the numbers of "stiff," "nervous," or "fainting" goats increased. During the 1950s, some Tennessee Fainting goats were taken to the hill country of central Texas. They were further selected for meat qualities, including larger size, and came to be known as "Wooden Leg" goats.

    CAN EXERCISE PREVENT FAINTING?
HOUGHTON, MIA researcher in Michigan Technological University's Center for Biomedical Engineering hopes to find an exercise regimen that will prevent fainting in persons who are otherwise healthy. Dr. William H. Cooke says a significant number of highly trained athletes and astronauts returning from space experience lightheadedness, tunnel vision, nausea, and fainting when standing upright. "Approximately 30-40 percent of astronauts just back from space missions can't stand for more than 10 minutes without showing signs of fainting," he says. "Many marathon runners and triathalon participants experience the same difficulty. In fact there's a saying, 'highly trained athletes can run, but they can't stand.' Of course, many non-athletes also have fainting spells." Cooke says that a significant number of fainting episodes are caused by a malfunction in the arterial pressure sensors responsible for maintaining adequate blood flow to the brain. "Based on previous research our group has done with normal healthy persons and with astronauts returning from space, I believe this malfunction resides, at least partly, in an inadequate neural response to decreases in blood volumesuch as occur when one stands and blood flows from the upper to the lower body. " The most intriguing aspect of the problem to Cooke is whether astronauts and athletes faint due to fundamental adjustments in neural regulatory mechanisms, and if so, what mechanisms do cardiovascular deconditioning in space flights and conditioning in traditional terrestrial exercise regimens share in common? And how are these mechanisms altered by different types of exercise training programs? For example, does resistance training increase or decrease nerve activity and arterial pressure sensing mechanisms?

    Panic Disorder (Recurring Panic Attacks)
Panic disorder is a condition where you have recurring panic attacks. Many people with panic disorder also develop agoraphobia. This means you avoid many places, and may not even go out from your home, due to fear of having a panic attack in a public place. Treatment with antidepressant medicines and/or cognitive behaviour therapy works well in over half of cases.
What is a panic attack? A panic attack is a severe attack of anxiety and fear which occurs suddenly, often without warning, and for no apparent reason. Various other symptoms then occur during a panic attack. These include one or more of the following:
    • Palpitations or a thumping heart.
    • Sweating and trembling.
    • Hot flushes or chills.
    • Feeling short of breath, sometimes with choking sensations.
    • Chest pains.
    • Feeling sick.
    • Feeling dizzy, or faint.
    • Fear of dying or going crazy.
    • Numbness, or pins and needles.
    • Feelings of unreality, or being detached from yourself.
The physical symptoms that occur with panic attacks do not mean there is a physical problem with the heart, chest, etc. The symptoms mainly occur because of an 'overdrive' of nervous impulses from the brain to various parts of the body during a panic attack. During a panic attack you tend to over-breathe (hyperventilate). If you over-breathe you 'blow out' too much carbon dioxide which changes the acidity in the blood. This can then cause more symptoms such as confusion and cramps, and make palpitations, dizziness, and pins and needles worse. This can make the attack seem even more frightening, and make you over-breathe even more, and so on.
