    FAINTING: WHAT CAUSES IT
What causes fainting? Fainting, which is also called syncope, can be related to many different things. More than one thing may be the cause of fainting. Sometimes a specific cause for fainting can't be found. Fainting is common. Although it usually isn't serious, fainting can make you worry, and it can lead to injuries from falling at the time of fainting. Fainting can happen when not enough oxygen flows through your blood and into your brain. You lose consciousness, or "pass out", for a very brief time of just a few minutes. A sudden drop in your blood pressure can cause you to faint. Sometimes your heart rate and blood vessels can't react fast enough when your body's need for oxygen changes. This is very common among older people. It can happen when:
    • You stand up fast. You work or play hard, especially if it's very hot. You begin to breathe too fast or too deeply (called hyperventilating).

    Fainting
Definition: Fainting is a temporary loss of consciousness due to a drop in blood flow to the brain. The episode is brief (lasting less than a couple of minutes) and is followed by rapid and complete recovery. You may feel lightheaded or dizzy before fainting. A longer, deeper state of unconsciousness is often called a coma.
Alternative Names: Passed out; Lightheadedness - fainting; Syncope; Vasovagal
Considerations: When you faint, you not only experience loss of consciousness , but also loss of muscle tone and paleness in your face. You may also feel weak or nauseated just prior to fainting and have the sense that surrounding noises are fading into the background.
Common Causes: Fainting may occur while you are urinating, having a bowel movement (especially if straining), coughing strenuously, or when you have been standing in one place too long. Fainting can also be related to fear, severe pain, or emotional distress.

    Fainting Overview
Fainting occurs because blood flow to the brain may temporarily be inadequate. Poor blood flow can occur with many conditions including common fainting (vasovagal episode, ie, relating to action of a nerve on blood vessels), dehydration arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), heart attack stroke seizure low blood sugar , and other more rare conditions. Common fainting can be a response to a stimulus such as drawing blood or getting up too quickly. Typically, fainting progresses from lightheadedness to graying of vision, then the person who is fainting slowly drops to the ground with minimal injury. Sudden onset of a complete loss of consciousness, prolonged jerking movements during the event, chest pain or palpitations, headache, or significant injury from fainting (cuts or lacerations to chin or head) signify the possibility of other more serious causes. Bush on fainting episode: 'Chew your food'
Bush appeared in front of reporters Monday with a bruise on his left cheek. EAST MOLINE, Illinois (CNN) President Bush scraped and bruised after a fainting spell extolled motherhood on Monday as another symbol of American patriotism, and gave the John Deere workers he addressed a lighthearted lesson to chew on. "If my mother is listening, mother, I should have listened to you: Always chew your pretzels before you swallow," Bush said jokingly. Bush lost consciousness for a brief time in the White House on Sunday evening while eating a pretzel and watching a professional football game on television. He fell from his couch and has a scrape and large bruise on his left cheekbone, plus a bruise on his lower lip, to show for his troubles. His glasses cut the side of his face. Loss of consciousness is interruption of one's awareness of self and surroundings. When loss of consciousness is temporary and recovers spontaneously it is referred to as fainting or syncope. Temporary loss of consciousness, or syncope, has been reported to account for 3 percent of patient visits to emergency departments. How does temporary loss of consciousness occur?
Temporary loss of consciousness is a result of a temporary reduction in the blood flow (and, therefore, oxygen) to the brain. This can lead to lightheadedness or a "black out" episode of loss of consciousness. There are many conditions which can temporarily impair the brain's blood supply. What conditions cause temporary loss of consciousness?
Temporary loss of consciousness can be caused by heart conditions and conditions that do not directly involve the heart. Temporary loss of consciousness is more commonly caused by conditions that do not directly involve the heart. These conditions include those caused by: 1) a shift in body position from lying or sitting to a more vertical position (postural hypotension); 2)

    Crossing Legs May Prevent Fainting
Study: Leg Tension Increases Blood Flow
POSTED: 11:30 a.m. EDT September 3, 2002 Are you feeling faint? Cross your legs. According to a Dutch researchers, a combination of leg crossing and muscle tensing may help prevent fainting, providing a simple solution for people prone to fainting during emotional stress or prolonged standing. The study, published in Monday's rapid access issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association , is the first of its kind to document the effectiveness of leg-crossing to prevent or delay loss of consciousness. Vasovagal syncope, or fainting, results from a neurological reflex that originates in the brain. In response to a physical or emotional trigger, the brain emits signals that cause blood vessels to dilate and causes blood to pool in the legs. The heart rate also slows. As a result, the brain does not receive enough oxygen-carrying blood, leading to fainting. SURVEY Are you prone to fainting?

What is syncope, and is it common?
Syncope (fainting) is common during childhood. In one medical study, almost 50 percent of interviewed college students claimed to have fainted at least once in their lifetime. Despite its high frequency, syncope generates a great deal of anxiety among patients and their caregivers, predominantly because of the fear that people with syncope are at risk for sudden death. Return to Top
    Syncope causes
Syncope is caused by a sudden decrease in blood pressure, which temporarily deprives the brain of a sufficient amount of oxygen. Dizziness often occurs before syncope and many patients complain of dizziness without syncope. Syncope has a variety of causes. Occasionally, syncope is caused by a neurologic problem such as a seizure or migraine headache. Other non-cardiac causes of syncope include breath-holding spells, rapid breathing (hyperventilation), hysteria, and exposure to certain drugs or toxins.

    79. Fainting
fainting is a momentary episode of unconsciousness caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. Common causes include heat, pain or distress.

Dear Alice, I have a question. I just heard that a woman can faint while having an orgasm and if so, is this normal? What causes this?

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Orgasms Coming and fainting: Is it possible to pass out from an orgasm? Originally Published: May 03, 2002 / Updated on: January 16, 2004 Dear Alice, I have a question. I just heard that a woman can faint while having an orgasm and if so, is this normal? What causes this? Dear Reader, Another explanation is that the brain doesn't receive enough oxygen and other nutrients because of reduced blood flow. This happens because sexual arousal causes blood to flow from the brain to the genitals. This may produce an altered state of awareness or, some say, a true loss of consciousness. Some people intentionally deprive the brain of oxygen to heighten sexual pleasure and orgasm. This practice of auto-erotic asphyxiation Fainting after orgasm could also be a symptom of a serious health condition, such as an abnormal heart rhythm. During daily activities, people with this condition may feel fine. However, when they exert themselves during exercise or sexual activity, their heart can't maintain adequate blood pressure. When the exertion ends, their heart rate decreases, but the blood vessels from the muscles remain dilated, causing them to feel faint or pass out. If fainting happens to someone you know, or to a partner, laying flat is usually all that is needed to recover. Raising the person's legs can increase blood flow to the brain and to the heart. Once the person comes to and feels better, slow movements towards an upright position will help her or him get on her or his feet. To be safe, it's a good idea for anyone who repeatedly has these fainting "spells" to talk with her or his health care provider.
