Fainting Goats.
"Fainting goats?" you ask. "This must be a joke!" "No," I reply, "they are definitely real." Fainting goats are a slightly smaller version of the standard goat, who, believe it or not, thanks to a genetic condition called myotonia congenita, actually seem to faint when they are startled. As strange as this may sound, these little critters have actually served an historical purpose. Shepherds often kept the goats in with their flocks as insurance in case of predator attacks. The theory went something like this- as wolves would come down from the hills to attack a flock of sheep, the goats would become startled and, as per the name of their breed, they would faint. The sheep would make a clean getaway, as the wolves would focus on the stunned goats rather than pursue the fleeing sheep. Not that wonderful if you were one of the goats, sure, but downright dandy if you happened to be a sheep. This breed has several names- the most common are Myotonic, Tennessee Fainting, Nervous, and Scare goats. The names refer specifically to myotonia congenita, a condition in which the muscle cells experience prolonged contraction when the goat is startled. The transitory stiffness associated with these contractions can cause the goat to stop moving, stiffen, and even fall down. This is not a true faint, but a muscular phenomenon unrelated to the nervous system. The actual degree of stiffness may vary widely from goat to goat and is based on a number of factors, including age, species purity, and degree of fright.

Tennessee Fainting Goats
The origin of the Fainting goat has been
traced back to the 1880's in Marshall County,
Tennessee. A man by the name of Tinsley came to
town bringing along a few goats and a "sacred"
cow. He stayed long enough to marry a local woman,
and to help a farmer with the harvest. He sold his
goats to a man by the name of R. Goode and then
departed the community. He took the cow with him,
but alas for the poor wife, left her behind.
Today's Fainting goats descended from those few goats. The goats were used primarily for meat, although they were also used to protect sheep. With a Fainting goat in the herd if coyotes or dogs threatened the sheep, the sheep could run away while the Fainting goat fell over, providing the predator with an easy meal while the sheep escaped. These goats were close to extinction by the 1980's, but have now been bred back to where they are no longer endangered. The name "Fainting" goat is a bit misleading because they do not actually faint. They have a genetic problem with relaxing

Fainting (Syncope)
Fainting is a sudden loss of consciousness. It most often occurs when the blood pressure is too low (hypotension) and the heart does not pump a normal supply of oxygen to the brain. Typically, a faint lasts only a few seconds or minutes, and then the person regains consciousness. The medical term for fainting is syncope (SIN koe pee). It is a common problem that affects one million people in the U.S. every year. About one-third of us will faint at least once during our lifetime. A single fainting spell usually is not serious. It may be explained by factors such as stress, grief, overheating, dehydration, exhaustion or illness. Many causes of fainting, however, are not easy to explain. Some are life-threatening. The most serious causes of syncope are related to heart damage or electrical system disorders that affect the heart's ability to pump blood efficiently. In some cases, fainting is the only warning sign of an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that could cause sudden cardiac death. more If you faint suddenly and without explanation, however, contact your physician.

Sanjay Gupta: Fainting a common problem
CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta (CNN) What could have caused President Bush to collapse Sunday while eating pretzels and watching a football game at the White House? CNN's Paula Zahn talked to medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta on Monday to shed light on the causes of fainting. ZAHN: Talk to us a little bit about what would cause the president to faint and what does a pretzel have to do with it, if anything? GUPTA: It is actually a pretty common problem. Something that could occur when people are scared of something. Sometimes cramping in the intestines can do this. Sometimes violent coughing can do this. MORE STORIES Bush: 'I feel great' after fainting episode We are talking about vasovagal response. The name is not as important as what it does. What it is actually is a reflex in this case possibly brought on by heavy coughing, which can stimulate a nerve to stimulate the heart to lower the blood pressure and lower the heart rate. A change in heart rhythm and dehydration could also possibly do it. Apparently, the president was feeling a little under the weather over the weekend that could have led to a little bit of dehydration. That in combination with the violent coughing episode surrounding eating the pretzel could have caused him to faint. It is a pretty common thing, and [doctors] see it a lot in emergency rooms and hospitals, but oftentimes it is just an isolated event and does not come back.

Myotonia is the condition that causes fainting goats to stiffen and/or fall over when startled. fainting goats generally have large and prominent eyes.
http://www.faintinggoat.com/learnab.htm
International Fainting Goat Association ABOUT THE BREED What is Myotonia? Where did they originate?
Their origin has been sought after by a number of people but it only traces back to the earl y 1800's when a farm worker appeared in Marshall County, Tennessee, with three does and a buck that fainted. It was thought by his dress that he might have come from Nova Scotia. He was a quiet man and wouldn't talk to anyone so whatever he knew will remain a secret forever. He eventually parted from Marshall County but before he did he sold his goats to Dr. H. H. Mayberry. Fortunately Dr. Mayberry propagated them and tried his best to research their history. He could find no evidence of such a breed anywhere else in the world. He was convinced they were a breed because their unique traits are hereditary.
More about the breed Fainting goats generally have large and prominent eyes. This feature is often referred to as bug-eyed or pop-eyed. These terms can be misleading, though many have eyes which seem to protrude form their sockets most often it's the structure of the eye socket itself that produces this feature. Temperament is very laid back and gentle. They are easy kidders and excellent mothers. Reproduction traits differ and some are seasonal kidders while others will breed year round. Fainting goats are easy to raise, easy to contain, can be a great meat animal, and are safe for children and neighbors.

Bush faints at White House, quickly recovers
WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush fainted for a brief time Sunday in the residence of the White House while eating a pretzel and watching a professional football game on television, the White House said. Bush's physician, Air Force Col. Richard Tubb, said the president blacked out and fell to the floor from a couch but appeared to have recovered quickly. Bush will undergo a physical examination early Monday morning and plans to depart to the Midwest on a previously scheduled trip, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Sunday night. What is fainting?
Fainting can be caused by a number of factors linked to a person's heart, circulation, blood pressure and breathing. The type of fainting attack described here is the most frequent and can happen at any time to otherwise healthy people.
What triggers fainting?
Things that trigger fainting include stressful situations , excitement and pain.
This could include visiting the doctor for a blood sample , or being in an overheated or overcrowded room.
Fainting typically occurs in connection with both physical and mental strain, and especially if a person does not feel well to start with.
Fainting can occur suddenly and unexpectedly. Often, everything goes black. The person then turns pale, starts sweating and possibly feels sick. It can happen while standing, sitting down or if one gets up too quickly.
