Many an aging person has trembling handsa sure sign, in their minds, of the onslaught of dreaded Parkinson's disease or embarrassing unsteadiness of old age. Both suspicions may well be unwarranted. Instead, the tremors could be symptoms of what's known as essential tremor (ET), a neurological condition suffered by about five million Americans, mainly over age 60. It is not deadly or contagious, but it sometimes worsens with the years. It typically is an inherited disorder.

All 11 evaluable patients noted improvement in action tremor. Six of eight ET patients had complete tremor arrest, and the violent action tremor in all three patients with MS was improved. One patient developed transient arm weakness. Stereotactic radiosurgery for ET and MS-related tremor is safe and effective for patients who may be poor candidates for other procedures. From the EFT email support list Essential Tremor and a cliff-driving phobia. Thought for the day..... "What weighs nothing and yet is powerful enough to start a war? A belief." Gary Craig NOTE: There are 3 important EFT features in this article.... 1. How seemingly different emotional problems can be linked to the same underlying issues. 2. How either persistence or a delayed reaction can resolve a problem. 3. How cognitive shifts can signal relief before the treatment is tested. Hi Everyone, "Essential Tremor" was a new term to me until I met Rhonda Noble. (she gave permission to use her name) It manifests as a shakiness in the hands and typically shows up while drinking a glass of water or eating soup with a spoon. For some people it shows up in their handwriting. It is publicly embarrassing. For Rhonda, it was particularly noticeable when in public situations or when she felt pressure to perform. She took great pains to hide it from others by avoiding the activities that brought it about. Her doctors told her it was hereditary and that she would only get worse with time (she is 47 so, presumably, that gave her lots of time to suffer). Apparently, most of the women in her family have it. It's a sort of family curse. Many take medications for it with no lasting results (but several negative side effects). After some creative applications of EFT, however, the problem seems to have vanished. No medications. Nothing but tapping.

ESSENTIAL TREMOR GUIDELINE PROPRANOLOL PRIMIDONE MOVEMENT FL Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Description Specific drugs commonly used to treat high blood pressure and seizures can be beneficial in the treatment of essential tremor, according to the American Academy of Neurology in a new practice guideline. For limb tremors, surgery can be an option if drug therapy is ineffective.
Neurology , the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology and will be published in the June 28 print issue. For limb tremors, surgery can be an option if drug therapy is ineffective. Essential tremor is a common neurological disorder that affects the hands, head, and voice. It is three times more common than Parkinson’s disease. People with essential tremor experience shaking they cannot control. The tremors can occur in any part of the body. Often the tremors interfere in daily activities such as eating and drinking or getting dressed. The tremors can begin in early adulthood and may become worse with age. In most cases, essential tremor runs in families. The guideline panel reviewed 211 articles to make evidence-based recommendations on the treatment of essential tremor. Although medications can reduce tremor, they did not eliminate them completely in most cases.

Movement Disorders Latest Essential Tremor News from E-MOVE Resource Library Multimedia Center Essential Tremor Description Essential tremor or ET is a common neurologic movement disorder. Estimates suggest that ET may be as much as 10 to 20 times as prevalent as Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting from 5 million up to as many as 10 million people in the United States. In the past, the condition was often referred to as "benign essential tremor." However, many experts consider use of the term "benign" unfortunate, since it may inappropriately minimize the impact of ET on disability, handicap, and quality of life (QOL). Tremor is defined as an involuntary, rhythmic oscillatory movement of a part or parts of the body, resulting from alternating or irregularly synchronous contractions of antagonist muscles. Tremor is the most common form of involuntary movement. Almost all individuals have experienced tremor at some point in their lives; however, only a small fraction of those with tremor seek medical attention. Tremors may result from normal (physiologic) or pathologic processes and may be characterized by their etiology or phenomenology (i.e., activation state, frequency, amplitude, waveform). With the exception of those affecting the facial region, tremors are frequently defined or characterized by the joint around which the body part moves.

  • voice tongue legs trunk
  • The shaking is most often a back-and-forth movement. What is going on in the body? No one knows exactly what happens in the body to cause these visible tremors. They are not life threatening, but they can make it hard for a person to function in daily life. What are the causes and risks of the condition? Heredity is the only known cause or risk for ET. Fifty to sixty percent of people with ET have a family history. When there is a family history of a similar tremor, the condition is called familial tremor. The trembling can get worse with the following:
  • stress, or emotion
