Announcement from the Japanese Society for Esophageal Diseases
The Japanese Society for Esophageal Diseases is the representative and authorized society for the study and research of esophageal diseases in Japan.
Among the various activities of the Society, the annual national meeting is the main event for promoting the latest information and treatment of esophageal diseases. Although our meeting is a national one, one of the aims of the Society is to exchange information internationally by opening our doors to guests from countries other than Japan.
Starting from the 1999 national meeting, any ISDE members or non-members from overseas countries who wish to come to Japan to participate in our meeting as guests are welcome. They can apply to present a paper in English as a guest speaker, or simply join in the meeting. The official languages are Japanese and English. Although all travel and accommodation expenses must be paid by the guests, the national meeting fee and any charges for receptions and social events would be waived.
Any guests who wish to come to Japan could approach to our Home Page.

Program Description
The Advanced Fellowship in Esophageal Disease offers you broad opportunities and advanced training in the clinical aspects of esophageal disease. It is intended for physicians planning an academic career in esophagology.
In, 1993, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology consolidated the care of patients with esophageal disorders by creating the Esophageal Interest Group and an Esophageal Clinic, with a staff of 14 physicians. They are supported by an active group of surgeons from the Division of Thoracic Surgery that works in close collaboration. The 40 to 60 patients seen weekly in the Esophageal Clinic have conditions that span the entire spectrum of esophageal diseases.

4. Symptoms and Signs of Esophageal Diseases page 94 4.1 Symptoms 4.1.1 DYSPHAGIA The history can also be used to help differentiate structural from functional (i.e., motility disorders) causes of dysphagia. Dysphagia that is episodic and occurs with both liquids and solids from the outset suggests a motor disorder, whereas when the dysphagia is initially for solids such as meat and bread, and then progresses with time to semisolids and liquids, one should suspect a structural cause (e.g., stricture). If such a progression is rapid and associated with significant weight loss, a malignant stricture is suspected. Associated symptoms help determine the etiology of dysphagia. For instance, a reflux-induced stricture should be suspected if the dysphagia is associated with heartburn or regurgitation, esophageal cancer if there is associated mid-back pain and weight loss, a motor disorder such as diffuse esophageal spasm if there is angina-like chest pain, and a "scleroderma esophagus" if there is arthralgia, skin changes or Raynaud's phenomenon.

Esophageal Disease and Treatments at Columbia University Medical Center Our thoracic surgeons have wide experience in the management of benign and malignant esophageal disease. The epidemiology of esophageal cancer has changed dramatically over the past decade. The incidence of adenocarcinoma associated with Barrett's metaplasia is rising dramatically, faster than any other tumor in North America. Squamous cell cancer of the esophagus continues to afflict nearly 10,000 Americans annually. Surgical resection from cancer of the esophagus offers patients immediate relief of symptoms and potential for cure. In the past, these tumors were often advanced when diagnosed and recurrence was not uncommon. In recent years, we have employed a multimodality approach to cancer of the esophagus. The combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy prior to surgery has dramatically improved both resectability and survival. A unique aspect of our approach to esophageal cancer involves endoscopic transesophageal ultrasound (EUS) to visualize tumor depth, surrounding lymph nodes and relationships to adjacent structures. This advanced technique is noninvasive, reliable and reproducible. In combination with PET and CT scanning, EUS is highly effective in properly staging tumors of the esophagus, thereby permitting better therapeutic decision-making for our patients with esophageal tumors.

Benign Esophageal Overview The esophagus is a tube through which food is delivered from the mouth to the stomach. Although it does not have any role in the absorption of food, it is critically important in delivering food from the mouth to the stomach in an orderly manner. Benign diseases of the esophagus are primarily related to swallowing irregularities and the backflow of acid or other toxic substances into the lower esophagus. These disorders are very common in modern life and account for significant symptomatology.
