Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California
Reaching Out to Families and Individuals Affected by Epilepsy because
We Believe that Not Another Moment Should be Lost to Seizures!
Epilepsy is one of the major health problems of our nation. More than 2.5 million Americans have epilepsy, yet it remains one of our most misunderstood and unknown health issues. About 181,000 new cases affecting people of all ages are diagnosed each year, resulting from head injury, stroke, prenatal illness, a variety of illnesses, and many other causes. The cause of epilepsy is unknown in over 70% of cases. About half of people with epilepsy have continuing seizures even with treatment. Many face problems in educational attainment, employment, transportation, and social interactions. The Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California is your local center providing services to families affected by epilepsy since 1953. We are dedicated to serving the nearly 130,000 people with epilepsy in our region and seek to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in all life experiences and prevent, control and cure epilepsy.

Photosensitive Epilepsy
What is it? Photosensitive epilepsy is an uncommon condition in which visual stimuli, such as flashing or flickering lights (usually of high intensity, and/or certain patterns such as stripes) trigger epileptic seizures. It is one of a group of "reflex" epilepsies, so called, because the seizure is a direct response to a stimulus. Who has it? Around one person in every 130 is diagnosed as having epilepsy whereas only one in about every 10,000 has photosensitive epilepsy. Among people with epilepsy, only an estimated 3 - 5% have seizures triggered by light or patterns. Photosensitive epilepsy most commonly affects children. The age of onset is usually between 9 and 15 years. It is rare to have a first seizure due to photosensitivity before the age of 5 or after the early 20's. It is genetically determined. Girls are affected more often than boys. Some photosensitive people have seizures only when they are exposed to a flashing or flickering light source or to certain patterns; others may have spontaneous seizures as well as seizures due to photosensitivity. The type of seizure e.g. tonic clonic, absence, myoclonic will vary from person to person.
