Registered Charity Number 1058958 Objectives:
The relief of persons with special needs in particular those who suffer from Epilepsy,
by the provision of Vagus Nerve Stimulators and by such other charitable means.
Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition in the world - affecting around 50 million people worldwide. Three-quarters of the 440,000 people with epilepsy in the UK have their seizures controlled and are able to work, drive and lead a fully active life. However, many people with epilepsy are still discriminated against due to ignorance about the condition. Epilepsy is the tendency to have recurrent seizures, caused by a disruption to the electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy can affect anyone, at any age and from any walk of life

Wes, who has epilepsy, spent most of his freshman year worried about having a seizure in front of his new classmates. Even though his teachers and friends knew of his condition - and Wes knew that he'd be OK if he did have a seizure - he was always concerned that he'd embarrass himself or scare his friends. What Is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a condition of the nervous system that affects 2.5 million Americans. More than 180,000 people are diagnosed with epilepsy every year. It can be scary watching someone have an epileptic seizure. The person may lose consciousness or seem unaware of what's going on, make involuntary motions (movements the person has no control over, such as jerking or thrashing one or more parts of the body), or experience unusual feelings or sensations (such as unexplained fear). After a seizure, he or she may feel tired, weak, or confused. People have seizures when the electrical signals in the brain misfire. The brain's normal electrical activity is disrupted by these overactive electrical discharges, causing a temporary communication problem between nerve cells. Just because someone has a seizure does not necessarily mean that person has epilepsy, though. Seizures can be triggered in anyone under certain conditions, such as life-threatening

    Epilepsy Unit
    Introduction
The Epilepsy Unit is situated in the grounds of the Western Infirmary in the west end of Glasgow. It is affiliated to the North Glasgow Hospitals University NHS Trust and to the University of Glasgow. Its aims and objectives are to provide a specialist clinical service for patients with suspected and established seizure disorders, to undertake research into the causation of epilepsy and its pharmacological management, to explore the tissue and cellular effects of new and established anticonvulsant drugs singly and in combination, and to train doctors, nurses and scientists in the clinical and basic aspects of the neuropharmacology and therapeutics of epilepsy. It contains patient and research laboratories, a cognitive function suite, an EEG unit, a secure facility for the storage of drugs, staff offices, and waiting and seminar rooms. The Epilepsy Unit is a member of the Joint Epilepsy Council for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
    Epilepsy Service
The epilepsy clinical service was set up at the Western Infirmary in 1984. Referrals have increased in number each year. Patients currently attending the service are aged 11 to 90. More than 80% come from their general practitioners with the majority of the remainder being tertiary referrals from other hospital clinics. Special programmes have been set up for teenagers, the elderly, first seizures, patients with refractory epilepsy and those with learning disabilities. A review service provides specialist assessment for patients who merit reconsideration of diagnosis, investigation or treatment. An epilepsy motherhood programme is also offered. Inpatients are accommodated in the wards of the University Division of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences. The clinical service fulfils all criteria recommended in the SIGN guideline ‘Diagnosis and Management of Epilepsy in Adults’.

    Epilepsy
is stigmatised, overlooked, and misunderstood and has been throughout history. The truth is that over 1.5 million people in the UK will experience an epileptic seizure at some time in their lives. An even more alarmingfact is that an estimated 5 million will be caught up in its consequences. With correct early diagnosis by a neurologist specialising in epilepsy and the latest medication, 75%-80% of epilepsy sufferers could be seizure-free.
In 2000 in the UK, 1098 people died as a result of epilepsy 177 (up 120). SIX times more than HIV/AIDS 177 (down 18), illustrating the low profile, lack of celebrity support and scandalously low investment in epilepsy research to find better treatments and ways of prevention.

        Introduction
Epilepsy represents the most common serious neurologic problem affecting children, with an overall incidence approaching 2% for febrile seizures and 1% for idiopathic epilepsy. Diagnosis is complicated by protean clinical manifestations which are age-dependent and differ substantially from adult seizure disorders. For example, infantile spasms may be misinterpreted as a simple startle reflex and absence (petit mal) seizures are sometimes attributed to inattention or attention deficit. Effective treatment depends largely on the physician's ability to establish an accurate diagnosis and choose appropriate therapy based on the likelihood of clinical benefit as well as potential side effects.

The group travelled by coach and on arrival demonstrated with placards outside the GMC offices in Euston Road. Eventually the police were called, but when they arrived they decided that no laws were being broken and left without taking action. At 1.00pm a representative of the GMC (Mr Paul Phillips) came outside and accepted approximately 80 letters of complaint. These letters were handed over individually to Mr Phillips with the parents’ representatives forming an orderly queue and each having a brief opportunity to express their anger at the treatment of their child by Dr. Holton. Following this a smaller group was admitted to the building and had a brief meeting with Mr Phillips who is a lawyer working for the GMC in relation to a doctor’s fitness to practice. At this meeting the families made clear that they were dissatisfied with the current GMC process into Dr. Holton’s performance. The group illustrated a catalogue of failures in the GMC workings.

What are our research goals and why are they important?
Our goal is to identify genes that play a role in causing epilepsy. Identification of the genes that raise risk for epilepsy is potentially very important for early identification and treatment of susceptible individuals. It could also provide important basic information about the causes of epilepsy. This new information could lead to development of new treatments or strategies for prevention.
