One of the Nation’s Most Common Disabling Neurological Conditions
Epilepsy is a general term that includes various types of seizures. People with diagnosed epilepsy have had more than one seizure, and they may have had more than one kind of seizure. A seizure happens when abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes an involuntary change in body movement or function, sensation, awareness, or behavior. Epilepsy affects about 2.3 million Americans, and results in an estimated annual cost of $12.5 billion in medical costs and lost or reduced earnings and production. People of all ages are affected, but particularly the very young and the elderly. About 10% of Americans will experience a seizure sometime during their lifetime, and about 3% will have had a diagnosis of epilepsy by age 80. The first national conference on public health and epilepsy, Living Well with Epilepsy I, convened in 1997. The conference was co-sponsored by CDC, the American Epilepsy Society (AES), the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC), and the Epilepsy Foundation (EF). This conference defined the aim of epilepsy treatment as "no seizures, no side effects." Its key messages can be summarized as: "take seizures seriously, do it early, do it right the first time, be systematic, efficient and effective, and empower the patient."

What is epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain. In people with epilepsy, brain cells create abnormal electricity that causes seizures. A seizure may cause "jerking" movements. In some cases, seizures cause only a loss of consciousness, a period of confusion, a staring spell or muscle spasms. A single seizure is not considered epilepsy. People with epilepsy have repeated episodes of seizures. Epilepsy is not a mental illness, and it is not a sign of low intelligence. It is also not contagious. Between seizures, a person with epilepsy is no different from anyone else. Return to top

National epilepsy Association of Aust Inc. FAQ.
http://www.nevdgp.org.au/geninf/epilepsyf/WOMEN_EPILEPSY.htm
Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria Inc. WOMEN AND EPILEPSY Women with epilepsy have many questions about epilepsy and their own health, pregnancy, and the well being of their future children. The following will help to provide general information and make it easier to ask questions when visiting your family doctor, neurologist, gynaecologist or obstetrician. Epilepsy at the time of menstruation is known as catamenial epilepsy. For some women seizure frequency may increase at the time of menstruation and, in others, seizures occur only at this time. The reason is uncertain, but it is thought that changes in hormone levels and anti-epileptic medication levels, fluid retention and possibly pre-menstrual tension may be the cause. Keeping a record of seizures may help identify a relationship between seizure frequency and menstruation and assist your doctor in formulating a suitable treatment plan. ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE PILL There is no evidence to suggest that the contraceptive pill can influence epilepsy in any way, either reducing or increasing seizure frequency. Generally, the main concern women with epilepsy have is the effectiveness of oral contraception in preventing conception. Some medications for epilepsy can reduce the effectiveness of the pill, leading to possible 'pill failure' and pregnancy. Breakthrough bleeding may also occur. These problems may be overcome by using a higher dose pill.

Epilepsy and Pregnancy: What You Should Know

Are there risks to me if I become pregnant?
Women with epilepsy who become pregnant have a higher risk for complications than women who don't have epilepsy. These complications include the possibility that your seizures will occur more often. The seizures can cause you to fall and have a serious injury. When you are pregnant, your body processes your anti-seizure medicines differently. This can lead to medicine levels that are too high (which can cause side effects) or too low (which can mean more seizures). Every woman who has epilepsy and becomes pregnant will react differently, so your doctor will talk to you about the risks and monitor you and your baby closely. Return to top

www.epilepsy.ca
pilepsy (ep-i-lep-sy) is sometimes called a seizure disorder. A seizure disorder is a kind of illness that only happens sometimes. It's not the kind of illness that makes you feel sick inside. It's not the kind of illness that makes you cough and sneeze. It's not the kind of illness that means you have to stay in bed and have your temperature taken. A child who has epilepsy feels just as healthy as everyone else most of the time. But sometimes she/he may have a seizure. This Website is all about seizures. If you have epilepsy, it's good to find out as much as you can about it. You'll know how your seizures happen You'll know how your medicine works and why you have to take it every day. Then you can tell other boys and girls who might want to know. If there's something on this Website that you don't understand, ask your mom or dad to explain it to you. If you have a special question about your seizure disorder, ask your doctor about it when you go for your next check up.
