Allie was a 3-year-old girl
seen by us for consultation in 2002 in regarding her intractable
seizures. She was having hundreds of grand mal and head drop seizures daily and had failed five different anticonvulsants, pushed to toxic doses. She was placed on the ketogenic diet and within one week became seizure-free. Medications were quickly weaned and in May 2004, after two years, Allie was taken off the ketogenic diet and remains seizure-free and doing wonderful in school to date.

50. What Is Epilepsy All About
epilepsy is hardly rare, but despite this, it is not well understood.
http://137.172.248.46/epilepsy.htm
Epilepsy is a disorder in which nerve cells of the brain from time to time release abnormal electrical impulses. These cause a temporary malfunction of the other nerve cells of the brain, resulting in alteration of, or complete loss of consciousness.
  • A common disorder... What causes epilepsy Varieties of epilepsy Partial seizures ... The causes of epilepsy
  • A Common Disorder
The most carefully collected data from international surveys indicate that about 1 adult in 200 suffers from recurrent epilepsy. If we include infants who have suffered seizures caused by fever (usually a temporary problem) and adults who have only ever had one seizure, the figure rises to about 1 person in 80. Epilepsy is hardly rare, but despite this, it is not well understood. Back to what it's all about
    What Causes Epilepsy?
To understand how epilepsy arises, we must briefly outline how the brain functions normally. The brain consists of millions of nerve cells, or neurones, and their supporting structure. Each neurone maintains itself in an electrically charged state. It receives electrical signals from other neurones, and passes them on to others. What actually happens is that a tiny quantity of a special neurotransmitter substance is released from the terminals of one neurone. This chemical excites an electrical response in the nuerone next in the chain, and so the signal moves onward.

    Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation
A better vision The Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation (DSEF) is a part of the non-profit Center for Natural Health Research and is devoted to looking into the best, natural, methods to help those who have both Down syndrome (trisomy 21) and various forms of epilepsy (including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome). These methods include clinical nutrition, real naturopathy, manipulative techniques, exercise, and other natural methods intended to improve the quality of life for those with Down syndrome, especially those who also suffer with seizures. The Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation is directed up by Robert J. Thiel, Ph.D., N.H.D. . He is not a medical doctor. He possesses a doctorate (Ph.D.) in nutrition science and a doctorate in natural health (N.H.D.). Thiel believes that DSEF has a better vision for those with both disorders. Why? Because he believes that natural is better. Because he believes that many health professionals and therapists have expectations for the disabled that are too low. Because he believes combining nutrition, exercise, and parental motivation results in better outcomes. Because he believes that science and common-sense show that the combination of natural interventions is the most logical to pursue and because that combination gets results. Because he has met with many of the so-called experts and researchers in this field and found many of their approaches lacking. He does not believe that he, nor DSEF, have all the answers, but does believe that in many respects, DSEF is at the forefront for practical research to benefit those with both Down syndrome and epilepsy.

Does anyone know if there is a correlation between epilepsy
and sleep disorders (such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea).
My 12 year old daughter has been recently diagnosed with
"primary absence seizures". She also has a rare form of
"sleep apnea" which is treated with bi-level nasal mask
    ventilation.
We have correlated her epilepsy attacks to every 90 minutes
which suggests a REM sleep disorder.

    Definition
According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, epilepsy is a physical condition that occurs when there is a sudden, brief change in how the brain works. When brain cells are not working properly, a person's consciousness, movement, or actions may be altered for a short time. These physical changes are called epileptic seizures. Epilepsy is therefore sometimes called a seizure disorder. Epilepsy affects people in all nations and of all races.
Some people can experience a seizure and not have epilepsy. For example, many young children have convulsions from fevers. These febrile convulsions are one type of seizure. Other types of seizures not classified as epilepsy include those caused by an imbalance of body fluids or chemicals or by alcohol or drug withdrawal. A single seizure does not mean that the person has epilepsy. Back to top
