Simple Pulmonary Eosinophilia (Loeffler's Syndrome)
Alternate Names : Eosinophilic Pneumonia, Loeffler's Syndrome, Pulmonary Infiltrates with Eosinophilia Definition Simple pulmonary eosinophilia is characterized by abnormal chest X-ray findings. These vary the abnormality may appear in one part of the lung at one time, but the next X-ray may show no pathology or a problem in a different part of the lung. The abnormal X-rays are accompanied by a rise in the number of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell that is probably involved in allergies) in the blood. The disease usually clears up without treatment.

What is Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome? Eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) is a multisystem disease that occurred in epidemic proportions in the Fall of 1989. EMS has been linked to the ingestion of an amino acid, L-tryptophan, made by a single manufacturer and contaminated with trace amounts of chemical impurities. Following recognition of the syndrome, L-tryptophan was recalled by the FDA in March, 1990. Over 1500 cases of EMS were documented by the Centers for Disease Control, and over 50 fatalities have been recorded. During the acute phase, EMS is characterized by flu-like constitutional symptoms, intense muscle pain (myalgia) and an increase in blood eosinophil counts. Later, the syndrome is often characterized by skin rash and fasciitis, which may resemble scleroderma or eosinophilic fasciitis. The skin and other organs may be infiltrated by inflammatory cells, including eosinophils, and the connective tissue is often inflamed and fibrotic. Other chronic features include neuromuscular disease and cardiac disease. Over time, the cutaneous abnormalities tend to improve, but many EMS patients continue to experience muscle cramps, muscle pain, fatigue, and memory disturbances. There is, unfortunately, no cure for EMS. Research is being conducted to develop an animal model of EMS so that its pathophysiology can be studied and treatments can be developed.

Bullous "Cellulitis" With Eosinophilia: Case Report and Review of Wells' Syndrome in Childhood
A 1-year-old girl presented with acute onset of edematous erythematous plaques associated with bullae on her extremities and accompanied by peripheral eosinophilia. She was afebrile, and the skin lesions were pruritic but not tender. The patient was treated with intravenously administered antibiotics for presumed cellulitis, without improvement.
