Symptoms Of Eosinophilia - Causes Of Eosinophilia
Eosinophilia is a chronic disorder resulting from excessive production of a particular type of white blood cells. If diagnosed in time and treated in a proper fashion this disorder is curable in most cases and affected persons can lead normal life. Read on for comprehensive information about this disorder. Find information pertaining to Causes of eosinophilia , the recognizable symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. What is Eosinophilia? Eosinophilia refers to a health condition resulting due to presence of excessive eosinophils (type of white blood cell) in blood or body tissues. Eosinophils are produced in the bone marrow existing normally in the bloodstream and gut lining, which helps the body fight infection from parasitic organisms. On an average around 5% to 7% of white blood cells constitute eosinophils but if you have a higher count then it means that you either have borderline eosinophilia or actual progressing eosinophilia that can cause significant health hazards. Causes of Eosinophilia There are a variety of disorders that can cause eosinophilia ranging from simple hay fever to life threatening tumor. Most common cause for eosinophilia are parasitic infections (such as hookworm, schistosomiasis), allergic conditions (such asthma and hey fever) and certain types of drug reactions. Few other rarer causes include:

Patients with eosinophilia have an abnormally high number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in their blood. Eosinophilia is not a type of cancer but it often occurs in reaction to something else in the body. High levels of eosinophils indicate that the body may be reacting to an allergen or parasite, or to substances produced by the cells of cancers such as Hodgkin's disease and chronic myeloid leukemia. Thus, eosinophilia is most commonly a reaction to a disease process rather than a specific disease itself. Eosinophilic leukemia is a rare cause of eosinophilia; it is treated similarly to other forms of acute leukemia. Treatments are generally aimed at the underlying allergic, parasitic, or malignant disorder.

Diagnosis of Case 8 :Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia
(Epithelioid Hemangioma)
Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia also known as epithelioid hemangioma is a distinctive vascular lesion which usually occurs during early and mid adult life (20- 40 years).
Clinically, this lesion presents as single or multiple pink to red-brown papules and nodules on the face, scalp and ear.
It is still uncertain whether this lesion is a true neoplasm or a reactive process.
Some cases appear to be associated with trauma, pregnancy, HIV infection, pregnancy and oral contraceptives.
Microscopically, these are well circumscribed lesions usually located in the dermis and subcutis. Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia consists of vascular and inflammatory cellular components.
The vascular component displays thick and thin walled vessels lined by plump endothelial cells. The epithelioid endothelial cells have rounded nuclei abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm containing occasional vacuoles that represent primitive vascular lumen formation. These endothelial cell protrude into the vessels in a 'tombstone' pattern. Within some thicker vessels there is intravascular proliferations of the endothelial cells.

- Eosinophilia - 2/10/03 re: Cause of rash, hyper-IgE and eosinophilia 11 year old female from Mexico has had recurrent exfoliating erythroderma since the end of November. Associated with recurrent high fever, marked elevation in eosinophils and IgE near 3,000. IgG has been 2,130, IgA and M are normal. During exacerbations has had severe Coombs negative anemia, thrombocytopenia, elevated BUN and Creatinine, Has progressed to severe respiratory compromise requiring ventilation at one point. Skin Bx: no vasculitis. Blood smear normal. ANA negative, Strep negative, EBV negative, Initial Dx Exfoliative Erythroderma felt to have resulted from medication, but unknown if it was from NSAID, Penicillin or Macrolide. Had been on all three while in Mexico around time of onset.
Responded well to treatment with high dose steroid, now has recurrence of dermatitis as she is being weaned from the steroid, and her creatinine has started rising. Anyone have any good ideas?
The case you describe in an 11-year-old child does sound complex. You did not mention whether or not the prominent respiratory symptoms were accompanied by abnormalities seen on plain chest x-ray or high-resolution chest CT exam, or whether the anemia was severe enough to cause respiratory distress on its own. You also did not mention whether a bone marrow exam was carried out during the anemia/thrombopenia and the results if done.

Alternate Names : Eosinophilic Pneumonia, Loeffler's Syndrome, Pulmonary Infiltrates with Eosinophilia Definition Simple pulmonary eosinophilia is characterized by abnormal chest X-ray findings. These vary the abnormality may appear in one part of the lung at one time, but the next X-ray may show no pathology or a problem in a different part of the lung. The abnormal X-rays are accompanied by a rise in the number of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell that is probably involved in allergies) in the blood. The disease usually clears up without treatment.
