The M.E. Society of America is an organization that seeks to promote understanding of the disease known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), a multi-system disease adversely affecting the heart, brain, neuroendocrine, immune, and circulatory systems. M.E. was first described in the 1950’s following the recognition of many cases around the world, including a number of cases at the Royal Free Hospital in England. Many different viruses, bacteria, or toxins in combination with genetic factors may be involved in the etiology of the disease. Studying research-based subsets is the key to scientific progress in this area of investigation. In a number of publications, Dr. A. Melvin Ramsay outlined a definitional framework for M.E. that described abnormal muscle metabolism, circulatory impairment, and cerebral involvement. Unfortunately, in 1988, what was historically known both as myalgic encephalomyelitis and as the well-documented epidemic neuromyasthenia was renamed “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” by employees at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), who imposed the misleading “fatigue” term onto patients and researchers. In 1994, more damage was done when the CDC broadened the definition for CFS to include many diverse, unrelated diseases, for which “CFS” became an umbrella term. Broadening the case definition led to conflicting research data, but there is a more current, research-updated case definition compiled by the Canadian Consensus Panel for ME/CFS, which includes neuroendocrine, immune, and cardiocirculatory symptoms as well as abnormal muscle metabolism, circulatory impairment, and cerebral/neurological involvement, available on this Web site. The ICD-10 code for ME/CFS is G93.3.

severely ill or die from this disease. More information regarding the human form of EEE can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site at www.cdc.gov History Eastern equine encyphalomyelitis virus (EEEV) is thought to have been the cause of EEE in North American horses since 1831. However, the virus itself may have been present in its endemic form long before that. The virus did not receive its name until a major outbreak occurred in horses in coastal areas of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia in 1933.
Additional outbreaks occurred in Virginia and North Carolina in 1934 and 1935 respectively. Mosquitoes were first determined to be potential carriers of EEEV in 1934. Since then, a number of studies have shown that various mosquito species of Aedes and Culex could become infected with and transmit EEEV from one vertebrate to another.

Click to join FightingME I'm starting up these pages because I believe that the other web sites don't offer the chance for the younger generations to share their experiences with their peers, although I want to make it clear that you don't have to be young. It is my hope that people when they e-mail in will feel free to express their true feelings about whatever they feel is important to them you can do this at Talk to me. You can send in your pictures, poems, stories (funny or serious) or something that people will find inspirational. I want people to think that they can contribute to this site to help me make this as successful as I possibly can and so for that I would like and need your feed-back and comments whether they are positive or not quite so. I believe strongly in the freedom of expression and that there is not always a right or a wrong answer to what people think or say. I think that what people believe is more important than being concerned about what's right and what's wrong! You can contact me at: hannah_butterworth@yahoo.co.uk

Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis
Veterinary Services September 2002 Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) is a mosquito-borne viral disease of all equine species, such as horses, asses, and zebras. After infection, equines may suddenly die or show progressive central nervous system disorders. Humans also can contract this disease. Healthy adults who become infected by the virus may experience flulike symptoms, such as high fevers and headaches. People with weakened immune systems and the young and the elderly can become severely ill or die from this disease.
The highly pathogenic form of VEE has not occurred in the United States since 1971. However, in 1993 an outbreak of VEE in the State of Chiapas, Mexico, prompted the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to temporarily increase its surveillance activities and tighten its quarantine requirements for equine species entering the United States from Mexico.

    The Definitive Description of ME
MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS : A Baffling Syndrome With a Tragic Aftermath. By A. Melvin Ramsay M.D., Hon Consultant Physician, Infectious Diseases Dept, Royal Free Hospital. [Published 1986]
The syndrome which is currently known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis in the UK and Epidemic Neuromyasthenia in the USA leaves a chronic aftermath of debility in a large number of cases. The degree of physical incapacity varies greatly, but the dominant clinical feature of profound fatigue is directly related to the length of time the patient persists in physical effort after its onset; put in another way, those patients who are given a period of enforced rest from the onset have the best prognosis. A second group of clinical features found in patients suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis would seem to indicate circulatory disorder. Practically without exception they complain of coldness in the extremities and many are found to have abnormally low temperatures of 94 or 95 degrees F. In a few, these are accompanied by bouts of severe sweating even to the extent of waking during the night lying in a pool of water. A ghostly facial pallor is a well known phenomenom and this has often been detected by relatives some 30 minutes before the patient complains of being ill.

Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE), also called Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis, is an animal model of Multiple Sclerosis. Animal models of human diseases are diseases of non-human species (often rodents) which closely resemble their human counterparts and are be studied with a view to better understanding and treating the human form. EAE is not multiple sclerosis, nor is it a single disease in a single species, but its different forms resemble the various forms and stages of MS very closely in a large number of ways. EAE is an acute or chronic-relapsing, acquired, inflammatory and demyelinating autoimmune disease. The animals are injected with the whole or parts of various proteins that make up myelin , the insulating sheath that surrounds nerve cells (neurons) . These proteins induce an autoimmune response in the animals - that is the animal's immune system mounts an attack on its own myelin as a result of exposure to the injection. The animals develop a disease process that closely resembles MS in humans. EAE has been induced in a number of different animal species including mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, macaques, rhesus monkeys and marmosets. For various reasons including the number of

Epidemiology
  • rare in developed countries. More common in developing countries where measles and other viral infections are more prevalent. Estimated to follow 1/1000 cases of measles
Aetiology
  • in developed countries most commonly follows non-specific upper respiratory tract infection in developing countries most commonly follows common childhood illnesses (eg measles, chickenpox) post immunization encephalomyelitis
    • most commonly associated with measles, mumps and rubella vaccination
      • incidence of ADEM following measles vaccination is 20 times lower than the incidence after measles infection
      Clinical features
      • non-specific symptoms (eg fever, malaise, myalgia, headache, nausea and vomiting) often precede neurological features, begining 4-21 days after precipitating event neurological features
