The small air sacs are unable to completely deflate (over inflation) and unable to fill with fresh air for adequate ventilation. Emphysema is not reversible, but the disease is manageable through medications, exercise and good nutrition.
In emphysema caused by smoking, which constitutes the majority of cases, the very small airways (bronchioles) that join the alveoli are damaged and the walls lose elasticity. Pockets of dead air form in the damaged lung areas restricting the ability to exhale, reducing normal lung function. Inhalation is not usually impaired in the early stages, but in the late stages of the disease, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels are abnormal and breathing becomes labored.

Fish Oils and Emphysema/Cystic Fibrosis
Summaries of the latest research concerning fish oils and emphysema/cystic fibrosis Lung disease and fish oils - A review of the evidence
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. The idea that fish and fish oils may protect against lung disease developed from early studies of the dietary habits of Greenland Eskimos. Dr. D.F. Horrobin hypothesized that the high content of omega-3 fatty acids in the Eskimo diet is at least partially responsible for the low prevalence of lung disease in this population group. This makes biological sense inasmuch as omega-3 fatty acids (notably from fish and fish oils) are known to inhibit the synthesis of the inflammatory eicosanoids involved in lung diseases. Dr. Schwartz concludes that there is a good case for fish and fish oils being protective against the development of chronic lung diseases, but that more research is needed to establish conclusive proof of benefits.
Schwartz, Joel. Role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in lung disease. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 71 (suppl), January 2000, pp. 393S-96S Intravenous fish oil infusion safe for CF patients
NEW YORK, NY. Seriously ill cystic fibrosis (CF) patients cannot absorb fats and other nutrients properly and therefore often need infusions of essential fatty acids. These infusions are most often based on linoleic acid as many CF patients have been found to have a deficiency of this omega-6 fatty acid. There is now substantial evidence that long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils can suppress inflammatory processes such as those involved in CF.

Emphysema
What is emphysema?
Emphysema is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that gradually destroys the lungs. The damage makes it hard to breathe. You have trouble breathing out carbon dioxide and become unable to breathe in enough oxygen.
How does it occur?
Cigarette smoking is the main cause of emphysema. An inherited disorder (passed down from parents) called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, or AAT deficiency, can also cause emphysema. If you are a smoker AND have this genetic disorder, the lungs become damaged more quickly. Cigarette smoke can damage the cells in your lungs. As the air sacs in your lungs (alveoli) become damaged, it gets harder for you to breathe out carbon dioxide after you breathe in air. This means more carbon dioxide stays in your lungs and you have less room for oxygen to be breathed in. Once this damage occurs, it does not go away. Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) is a protein that is made in the liver. The liver releases this protein into the bloodstream. AAT helps protect the lungs against damage from other chemicals in the blood. If you have AAT deficiency, you have too little of this protein and your lungs can be damaged more easily.

The Baby's First Breath
Everyone knows that it is much more difficult to blow up a balloon for the first time. Why is that? For one thing, the applied pressure does not create much tension in the walls of a small balloon to start the stretching process necessary for inflation. According to LaPlace's law , the wall tension will be twice as large for a balloon of twice the radius. If it takes a certain applied pressure to overcome the elasticity of the large balloon and cause it to expand further, it will take twice as much pressure to start to expand the smaller balloon. All this makes it difficult for the baby to take its first breath all the balloons are small! The alveoli of the lungs are collapsed in the fetus and must be inflated in the process of inhalation. Thus the traditional spank on the bottom of the newborn to make him/her mad enough to make the effort for the first breath. Further difficulties are encountered by premature infants because the surfactant fluid which coats the alveoli to give them the appropriate wall tensions is formed in the later stages of pregnacy. Until that point, the alveoli are coated with fluid which has essentially the surface tension of water, much higher than that of the normal surfactant.

Emphysema
What is emphysema?
Emphysema is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that gradually destroys the lungs. This destruction means that you become unable to breathe in enough oxygen. You also have trouble breathing out carbon dioxide.
How does it occur?
Emphysema is almost always caused by cigarette smoking. However, rare genetic diseases can cause similar changes in the lungs and, when combined with cigarette smoking, more rapid destruction of the lungs. Cigarette smoke can damage the cells in your lungs. This damage changes the structure of the tiny air sacs in your lungs called alveoli. The surface area of the air sacs for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide becomes smaller, and the air sacs become less elastic. These changes affect your ability to breathe out carbon dioxide after breathing in. As the carbon dioxide accumulates in your lungs, there is less and less room available for oxygen to be breathed in. Once this damage has occurred, it is not reversible. Researchers are looking for ways to predict who is more likely to develop emphysema if they smoke. At this time, however, they have found no tests for this risk.

The term COPD is applied to a variety of lung diseases that are characterized by impairment in the ability to blow air out of the lungs (as measured by lung function testing, or "PFT’s"). The major individual diseases included in this group are emphysema and chronic bronchitis . COPD is a major cause of serious illness in the U.S., and more than 15 million Americans are affected. Cigarette smoking accounts for 80-90% of the risk of developing COPD, although a very small number of patients have a genetic form of emphysema (called

LRRI RESEARCH TO FIND A CURE FOR EMPHYSEMA
Scientists at LRRI have developed a mouse model of cigarette smoke-induced emphysema. Mice that inhale cigarette smoke and develop emphysema not only show the enlarged alveoli and destruction similar to human emphysema, but they also have deposits of tar and chronic inflammation, as do patients with emphysema. Therefore, we feel that this model is the most appropriate for testing potential therapeutic drugs. We're enthusiastic about our current research to devise a treatment based on the inhalation of retinoids. LRRI scientists already have the needed expertise in aerosol drug delivery. Because inhaled retinoids directly target lung tissues, lower doses of retinoids may be effective when administered in this manner. We hope that inhalation of retinoids will avoid many of the problems of systemic toxicity.

Alternate Names : Crepitus, Subcutaneous Air, Tissue Emphysema Definition Subcutaneous emphysema is the inadvertent introduction of air into tissues under the skin covering the chest wall or neck. This can happen due to stabbing, gun shot wounds, other penetrations, or blunt trauma.
Skin Layers Subcutaneous emphysema can often be seen as a smooth bulging of the skin. When a health care provider feels the skin (palpates), it produces an unusual crackling sensation as the gas is pushed through the tissue.
