ambeelove Time: 11:43 pm I need advice.
My fiance and I are flying to Jamaica in two weeks. I have flown before and I don't have a problem with motion sickness, but I am terrified of other people on the plane getting sick. I keep imagining being on the plane, and someone right next to me getting sick, and me being strapped into my seat and not being able to get away quickly enough. Jacob keeps telling me that I'm just being paranoid, and that it's not going to happen. But I think there is a good chance that it COULD happen - why else would they have those v* bags on the airplane? Jacob doesn't seem to take my fear seriously. He is absolutely terrified of flying, so I guess my emetophobia seems a bit silly to him. He's probably thinking "Who cares if someone vomits? The plane could crash at any moment!!" We are going to be quite a pair on the airplane...both of us having separate panic attacks for completely different reasons.
Anyway, I was wondering if there is anything I can do to keep myself calm on the plane. Someone said to take Dramamine, but I've never taken it before, and I don't really like to take medications because most of the time they make me feel strange and even more prone to anxiety. Has anyone ever tried Dramamine before? Are there any side effects?

I don't think I could ever be a nurse. I would always be afraid of people getting sick. But then again, I am a bartender, and I deal with very drunk people on a daily basis. If I can do that, you can definitely be a nurse. You'll probably deal with v* a lot less than I do. Reply to this

So much of what was in your post is so familiar to me. Especially the bit about alcohol. I've never been sick from drinking too much, but the fear is enough to make me pretty much tee-total! Reply to this

Hi'a there Sarah,
My name is Hayley I have emetophobia too. I just wanted to say hi and that sympathize very much (sorry bout the spelling)^_^. I've had a fear of being sick for as long as I can remeber. I've done, and do all the things you posted about, especially staying in my room and listening to music, not eating certain things, and feeling worried about not being able to get away when out an about. I hope you feel better. If you ever want to chat I'd been more than happy too. Hayley ^_^ Reply to this Not logged in Create account, or use

Hello,
We have a 16 year old daughter who has seen many physicians,
psychologists and psychiatrists over the years. We can't seem to pinpoint the
problem. There are some days we think she is suffering from something in
the abdomen, then there are other days we think she is suffering from
something in the head (something like emetophobia). But she always
complains of chronic nausea. Even though she does eat, we can't get her to eat a balanced diet. She had blood tests where the only parameter that was abnormal was total bilirubin was 2.2 mg/dL (the correct range should be 0.2 thru 1.3 mg/dL) otherwise all tests negative. Ultrasound results of the abdomen are also negative (there's no abnormality seen in the liver, portal vein, gallbladder, bile duct, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and no gallstones or ascites).

fears and phobias
A Phobia is:
"an external symbolic interpretation of an internal anxiety."
What does that mean?
When a person finds themselves in a situation that creates intense emotions, the persons 'psyche' has the ability to repress/hide/disavow those emotions. Once those emotions have been bottled up, the psyche will create a phobia - to warn the person not to get into that (or any similar) situation again.
Makes sense doesn't it?
You get bitten by a dog......... you (can) develop a fear of dogs. The fear stops you going anywhere near dogs, and hence prevents you from getting bitten again..
What's the difference between a fear and a phobia?
The main difference is in the severity of the emotional reaction: a strong dislike of flying is a fear, whereas a pathological fear (an intense, uncontrollable, unendurable, physical fear) is considered to be a phobia. Phobias - Symbolic
Although some Phobias seem to serve an obvious purpose (fear of fire, drowning etc.) some appear to make no sense at all! - rest assured though, all Phobias serve a purpose. In therapy, we can find the originating cause (the unconscious conflict) of the Phobia and release it - and when the emotions are released, the phobia disappears. Most Phobias are not directly related to the cause of the emotion, they are symbolic of it. The most obvious example is the fear of flying: how many people do you know who have lived through a plane crash? None? well where do the UK's 12 million aviatophobics come from then? They (mostly) don't have a fear of flying (or dying, or crashing, or being blown up), they have a fear of being out of control - which their brain symbolises and the projects onto flying.

emetophobiaA personal but detailed description of emetophobia, a severe phobia of vomiting By Kris.
    http://www.designedthinking.com/Fear/Phobias/defined/defined.html
Designed Thinking Improving Your Thoughts - BetteringYour World Contrary to popular belief, phobias are not a mental disorder, but a learned response, an intense fear to an object or activity. We often get calls from people telling us "I know this doesn't make sense, but I can't help myself and I just want it to stop". Designed Thinking has assisted people just like you to undo the learned responses their mind has focused on. You too can stop the discomfort and permanently overcome these challenges. What many of our clients have found so amazing is how quickly their phobias can disappear. In overcoming your fears, surface level changes will not help, as they must occur at deeper neurological level, with in your subconscious mind. By rewriting the old unwanted programst, you can shift how you response to these fears. When you do this, your mind will not be able to recreate the past panic you have suffered with, as the fears are simply gone from your way of thinking. If you're looking to let go of your fears as soon as possible, call us ( ) and we will be glad to get you started or to answer any questions you may have. You can also go to our
