CANINE EHRLICHIOSIS
What is canine ehrlichiosis?
Ehrlichiosis is an infectious disease of dogs. It first gained attention as a significant disease when military dogs returning from Vietnam during the 1970's were found to be infected. The disease seems to be particularly severe in German shepherds and Doberman pinchers.
The organism responsible for this disease is a rickettsial organism; rickettsiae are similar to bacteria. Ehrlichia canis is the most common species involved in ehrlichiosis, but occasionally, other strains of the organism will be found, i.e., Ehrlichia platys. Because of its origin in military dogs in Vietnam, it has also been called "tracker dog disease" and "tropical canine pancytopenia.
How does a dog get infected with ehrlichia?
Ehrlichiosis is transmitted to dogs through the bite of infected ticks; the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is the main reservoir of the organism in nature.
What are the signs of ehrlichiosis?
Signs of ehrlichiosis can be divided into three stages: acute (early disease), subclinical (no outward signs of disease), and chronic (long-standing infection).
In areas where ehrlichiosis is common, many dogs are seen during the acute phase. Infected dogs may have fever, swollen lymph nodes, respiratory distress, weight loss, bleeding disorders, and, occasionally, neurologic disturbances. This stage may last 2-4 weeks.

Ehrlichiosis Ehrlichiosis is caused by the rickettsial organism Ehrlichia canis. Other examples of rickettsial organisms are Riskettsia rickettsi, which causes Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichia risticii, which causes Potomac Fever in horses. These organisms tend to be carried by ticks and other insect vectors, in some cases. For ehrlichiosis, the most common vector is the brown dog tick. For this reason, ehrlichiosis occurs anywhere this tick occurs. At present, it has been reported in 34 states, with the northern states being spared in most instances. The southeastern and south central states are the most heavily affected. A few cases of Ehrlichia canis infection have been reported in people after tick bites. The best method of diagnosing this disease is through testing of serum from the dog using an immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test. unfortunately, a positive test only indicates exposure. Still, in the presence of clinical signs or if the titer rises after treatment or stays consistently high, infection is strongly implied by the lab results. What is ehrlichiosis? Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne disease which can be caused by either of two different organisms. Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (HME) is caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis, which is transmitted by the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum). Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis (HGE) is caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilia, also called anaplasmosis, transmitted by the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis). In New York state, most cases of ehrlichiosis have been reported on Long Island and in the lower Hudson Valley. Who gets ehrlichiosis? Anyone can get ehrlichiosis, although the majority of known cases have been in adults. People who spend time outdoors in tick-infested areas from April until October are at greatest risk for exposure. How is ehrlichiosis transmitted?

What is ehrlichiosis?
Ehrlichiosis is an acute disease of humans and animals caused by a group of bacteria named Ehrlichia. These organisms, which are transmitted by ticks, can infect human white blood cells and cause illness.
Where does ehrlichiosis occur?
One type of ehrlichiosis, caused by the bacterium Ehrlichia chaffeensis, occurs primarily in the south central and southeastern United States. This particular organism, which infects the white blood cells called monocytes, has been known to exist for years and is not uncommon in the southern states. A new type of Ehrlichia is now known to occur in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and certain northeastern states. This recently discovered Ehrlichia has not yet been named, but because it infects the white blood cells known as granulocytes, the illness it causes is referred to as human granulocytic ehrlichiosis.

What is Ehrlichiosis?
E hrlichiosis is a tick-associated disease caused by bacteria in the genus Ehrlichia . To date, two types of ehrlichiosis have been identified in humans in the United States; HME, or Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis, caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis , and HGE, or Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis, caused by a yet unnamed species. It is possible that additional forms of ehrlichiosis in humans may be identified in the future. Unlike Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis is considered an acute infection without chronic long-term consequences. Its severity varies from person to person. Many people exposed to the disease agent remain asymptomatic, while others suffer mild symptoms that resolve without treatment. In a minority of cases, however, ehrlichiosis produces severe symptoms requiring immediate antibiotic treatment. These cases can be life-threatening and even fatal for elderly patients and others with compromised immune systems. Like Lyme disease, transmission of the ehrlichiosis bacterium is delayed an average of 36 hours or more after an infected tick begins to feed. Although Lyme disease and HGE infection rates in deer ticks are thought to be comparable in endemic areas of the northeast, evidence indicates that the transmission of

Tick Prevention Poster EHRLICHIOSIS What is ehrlichiosis? Ehrlichiosis is a disease of humans and animals caused by bacteria named Ehrlichia . The bacteria, which are transmitted by ticks, can infect certain types of white blood cells. Cases of ehrlichiosis have been confirmed in many states in this country. In Illinois, less than 10 cases of ehrlichiosis are reportedly yearly. How do you get ehrlichiosis? The bacteria are transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected tick. The lone star tick, the American dog tick (or wood tick) and the deer tick (or black-legged tick) have been associated with ehrlichiosis. Who gets ehrlichiosis? Anyone is susceptible to the disease, but persons who spend time outdoors in tick-infested environments are at increased risk of exposure. In the Midwest, risk of exposure is greatest from spring through late autumn, but some ticks can become active any time of year if the temperature is warm enough (about 40 degrees Fahrenheit or more at ground level). What are the symptoms of ehrlichiosis? Illness due to ehrlichiosis can be so mild that no medical care is sought or the illness can be severe and sometimes fatal. Symptoms are generally non-specific and other diagnoses may be considered. The more common complaints are fever, headache and muscle aches. Persons with ehrlichiosis also may experience loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. A rash can occur but is usually not present.

What is ehrlichiosis?
Ehrlichiosis is a tickborne disease of humans and animals caused by bacteria named Ehrlichia . The bacteria are transmitted by ticks and can infect two different types of white blood cells. The first human case in the U.S. was reported in 1986, in a man exposed to ticks in Arkansas. Who gets ehrlichiosis?
Anyone can get ehrlichiosis, although the majority of known cases have been in adults. People who spend time outdoors in tick-infested areas from April until October are at greatest risk for exposure. How is the disease spread?
The bacteria are transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected tick, including the deer tick, the dog tick and the Lone Star tick. Ehrlichiosis cannot be spread from person to person. What are the symptoms of ehrlichiosis?
The most common symptoms are fever, chills, muscle aches, weakness and headache. Patients also may experience confusion, nausea, vomiting and joint pain. Unlike Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a rash is not common. Infection usually produces mild to moderately severe illness, with high fever and headache, but may occasionally be life-threatening or even fatal. When do symptoms appear?
