Eczema
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Eczema, the most common type of skin inflammation (dermatitis), refers to several conditions that share a pattern of changes in the surface of the skin. Eczema first appears as an episode of itching and redness of the skin. You also may have tiny bumps or blisters. When it develops into a long-term condition (chronic eczema), it leads to thickening skin, scaling, flaking, dryness and color changes. There are many types of eczema, depending on the cause, shape and location of the rash. Most are related to allergies or to contact with irritating chemicals. Some are associated with underlying medical conditions that cause fluid retention in the legs. In the United States, eczema affects approximately 10% of the population.

    Informazione preliminare

I too have a long history of severely uncomfortable and troubling eczema. During the worst outbreaks, I have visited several different dermatologists, and all have prescribed topical hydrocortisones, such as Hytone or Topicort, as well as anti-itching pills, such as Atarax. One prescribed Diprolene ointment, which I used for a year, until my next dermatologist dismissively told me it was far too strong and could be damaging. Helplessly Itchy Dear Helplessly Itchy, Eczema (a.k.a., "atopic dermatitis") is a skin disease with red, blistering, oozing, scaly, brownish, thickened, and itchy skin lesions. Eczema runs in families with allergies, such as hay fever or asthma. Eczema causes constant itching in a vicious itch-scratch-rash-itch cycle. Stress, dry skin, environmental temperature and/or humidity changes, bacterial skin infections, and wool and synthetic garments often make the condition worse. No one knows what causes eczema. There is no cure, but several treatments for eczema are available. It is impossible to know exactly how any one treatment will affect each and every patient. Treatment involves a good deal of trial and error.

    Background
    Objectives
The objectives of this scoping review are two-fold.
    • To produce an up-to-date coverage ‘map’ of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of treatments of atopic eczema.
    • To assist in making treatment recommendations by summarising the available RCT evidence using qualitative and quantitative methods.
    Methods
    Data sources
Data sources included electronic searching of MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Controlled Clinical Trials Register, the Cochrane Skin Group specialised register of trials, handsearching of atopic eczema conference proceedings, follow-up of references in retrieved articles, contact with leading researchers and requests to relevant pharmaceutical companies.
    Inclusion/exclusion criteria
Only RCTs of therapeutic agents used in the prevention and treatment of people with atopic eczema of any age were considered for inclusion. Only studies where a physician diagnosed atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis were included.

and it has a chemical structure similar to chloroquine (which works great for atopic dermatitis if you are patient) and which I've occasionally used systemically and even topically for atopic dermatitis and hand eczema. KC Smith MD FRCPC - I am sure you have asked all of this, but what was different, besides her hormones, during her pregnancy. Did she stop using "dangerous" household irritant chemicals, did her husband flea shampoo the dog instead of her, did she start "nesting" in her house, instead of the garden? There are many more of us with the same patient out here, but not all of them have gotten better in pregnancy, so you are a little luckier, and might have more to work with. I suppose one could empirically try the shorter lived accutane empirically. A recent patient of mine like this failed PUVA, steroids, Buspar and probably other things I have forgotten. I eagerly await more contributions along with you. Diane Thaler

Eczema Skin Creams Can Cause Cancer
Researchers have found a link between increased risks of certain cancers and the use of two prescription creams commonly used to treat skin conditions in children has initiated a growing concern among scientists. This concern prompted scientists to propose adding stronger warnings to the product labels. The two brands of cream under investigation are Protopic and Elidel. Although the creams were approved only to be used for a short-term use for adults and children age 2 and older, the marketers of Elidel pushed aggressively for a longer indication. One researcher stated that the product is being heavily advertised without regard for the potential cancer risks, particularly among young children. The result of this marketing push is that both creams are being used for longer than they safely should be among adults and babies. On the contrary, the makers of the Elidel argued that the cream is an effective steroid-free treatment for mild to moderate eczema and has a well-established profile.

    Eczema and Food Allergy
Dr. Jeanne Louw An overemphasis on food allergies is one of the major causes of frustration and suffering for people with eczema, especially Atopic eczema. There are countless reports of various foods causing a flare of eczema. There are also countless stories where avoiding a specific food has resulted in clearing eczema.
What is not so often published are the stories where diet manipulation has resulted in no improvement at all! Eczema severity fluctuates and improvement following diet changes might simply be coincidence.
Treat your eczema correctly and you will most likely stop worrying about food allergies.
Is it possible that food can worsen eczema? Yes, it is, but so can countless other triggers.
A recent study ( Effective therapy of childhood Atopic dermatitis allays food allergy concerns ) has shown estimated food reactions decreased by 80% as eczema improved following conventional therapy. The article states: "This preliminary assessment of parental perceptions suggests that successful, stable therapy of Atopic Dermatitis reduces perceived food reactions and allays parental concerns about food allergy. Such therapy may encourage parents to refocus on direct skin care as the primary effort in Atopic Dermatitis therapy."
So, in only 20% of cases did “perceived food allergies” remain a potential problem following conventional therapy.

    Atopic Dermatitis / Eczema
Defining Atopic Dermatitis Atopic dermatitis is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that affects the skin. It is not contagious; it cannot be passed from one person to another. The word "dermatitis" means inflammation of the skin. "Atopic" refers to a group of diseases where there is often an inherited tendency to develop other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever. In atopic dermatitis, the skin becomes extremely itchy. Scratching leads to redness, swelling, cracking, "weeping" clear fluid, and finally, crusting and scaling. In most cases, there are periods of time when the disease is worse (called exacerbations or flares) followed by periods when the skin improves or clears up entirely (called remissions). As some children with atopic dermatitis grow older, their skin disease improves or disappears altogether, although their skin often remains dry and easily irritated. In others, atopic dermatitis continues to be a significant problem in adulthood. Atopic dermatitis is often referred to as "eczema," which is a general term for the several types of inflammation of the skin. Atopic dermatitis is the most common of the many types of eczema. Several have very similar symptoms. Types of eczema are described [below].
