Researchers discover cause of bleeding in ebola
WASHINGTON (AP) Researchers have identified the portion of the Ebola virus that causes massive bleeding, the frightening hallmark of the deadly disease that has begun appearing periodically in Africa. Although Ebola is not common or widespread, it has received much attention since first being reported in 1976 because of the fear generated by the heavy bleeding and the disease's 90 percent death rate.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) The deadly Ebola virus, which emerged mysteriously from African forests, probably attacks people who butcher and eat infected animals, researchers said on Thursday. The virus, which most recently killed 29 people in the Congo Republic, seems to break out when people slaughter chimpanzees, gorillas and small antelopes called duikers, the scientists said. "Humans and duikers scavenging for meat probably became infected by contact with dead apes," they wrote in their report, published in Friday's issue of the journal Science. "Almost all human Ebola outbreaks in Gabon and the Republic of Congo have been linked to the handling of dead animals by villagers or hunters, and increased animal mortality always preceded the first human cases," added the international team of researchers, led by Eric Leroy of the Development Research Institute in Gabon. They said health workers may be able to get a warning of Ebola outbreaks when large numbers of dead animals start appearing in forests.

    Introduction
Ebola is one of the most lethal viruses that infects primates. It has a mortality rate that ranges from 53-88%. It is endemic to Africa and to the Philippines. Due to its highly pathogenic nature, scientific research conducted on Ebola must be conducted in a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory (AIDS/HIV is a Biosafetly Level 2 virus). The constraint on scientific research that its nature has dictated has resulted in many significant gaps in what is known about it, and even larger gaps in what has been published about it. Its highly pathogenic nature has also resulted in a notable amount of misinformation that has been published. This web site is designed to present, in a review style, the data, previously published and unpublished, known about it to fill the knowledge gaps and to correct the misinformation.

    • The Mindanao, Philippines Outbreak
The outbreak of EBO-R in the United States caused by infected monkeys in the United States prompted the Philippine government to investigate whether the workers in the primate facilities were at risk for contracting EBO-R, and, if so, to what degree they were at risk. The investigative team studied 186 people, 48 of whom were from wildlife collection areas and the remaining 138 were from the four primate export facilities in the area (Ferlite Farms being one of the four). Twelve of the 186 people tested had serological evidence of infection with EBO-R. 22% of the workers at Ferlite Farms had positive IFAT (indirect fluorescent antibody test) titers, which was significantly higher than at the other three export facilities. Of the five employees in Ferlite's animal hospital, four had positive IFATs. Workers in the hospital had more positive titers than the rest of the workers at Ferlite Farms.
All of the monkeys at Ferlite were killed after this outbreak of EBO-R in 1989.

Some 120 people died from Ebola in north-western Congo in 2003 The first vaccine to protect monkeys against Ebola and Marburg viruses has been developed by scientists from Canada, the United States and France.
The study could advance research into finding treatments for use in humans. Both Ebola and Marburg cause haemorrhagic fever - massive internal and external bleeding - which can kill up to 90% of those infected. Angola is continuing to fight the outbreak of Marburg, while cases of Ebola have been reported in Congo. Breakthrough claims There are no vaccines and no drugs available against the deadly viruses. But this latest research - published in the Nature Medicine journal - does show real potential for protection against these diseases. Scientists adapted another type of virus to carry proteins from the Ebola and Marburg viruses.

Health officials are investigating a new outbreak of the Ebola virus that has killed four people in Sudan.
A team from the World Health Organization (WHO) has traced the outbreak to Yambio, in the Western Equatorial region of south Sudan. There are 19 probable cases. About 120 people who came into contact with them are being kept under surveillance. A WHO spokesperson told the BBC the outbreak did not appear to be as virulent as previous ones. PAST MAJOR OUTBREAKS 1976 - southern Sudan, 117 deaths 1995 - Congo, 280 deaths 2000 - northern Uganda, 173 deaths 2002 - Congo, 100 deaths Despite earlier reports, it was not thought that a new strain of Ebola was involved. The Ebola virus in its early stages is hard to diagnose because some of the symptoms, like fever and joint pain, mimic malaria. Many people go on to develop internal bleeding, a characteristic typical of Ebola, and without medical attention the prospects are bleak.

    WHO confirms Ebola outbreak
The ebola virus GENEVA, Switzerland The World Health Organisation says there had been at least one case of the deadly Ebola virus in Gabon. The confirmation follows reports that 10 people had died of a mystery illness in the Central African country. A WHO official said in the Gabon capital Libreville on Friday that 10 people, including a nurse, had died in Gabon from a disease it was feared could be Ebola. The WHO told Reuters from its Geneva headquarters on Saturday at least one case of Ebola had been reported from Gabon. At least 66 people died from Ebola in the same area of Gabon in 1996. Another WHO official said on Friday 28 people had died of haemorrhagic fever in the Democratic Republic of Congo and doctors feared that outbreak might also be Ebola. There is no known cure and no vaccine for Ebola, which causes up to 90 percent of victims to bleed to death in a matter of days.

    EBOLA
Ebola haemorrhagic fever was first recognised in 1976, when large outbreaks occurred in southern Sudan and neighbouring northern Zaire. Person-to-person spread was common in the local hospitals, but also caused many cases in the community. Mortality rates were as high as 80-90% in some groups of patients, giving rise to extreme concern both in the original outbreaks and in case of export of the disease to non-endemic areas
Area affected Cases identified Deaths Nzara, Sudan 1976 Maridi, Sudan 1976 Northern Zaire 1976 Zaire 1997 Nzara, Sudan 1979 Cote d'Ivoire 1994 Kikwit, Zaire 1995 Booue, Gabon 1996 Libreville, Gabon Johannesburg, South Africa
    Transmission during outbreaks
In the 1976 Sudan outbreaks, the staff of Maridi Hospital were severely affected, 76 of the 230 staff contracted Ebola fever, with 41 deaths. A scientist in the UK suffered severe illness, but recovered fully, after sustaining a minor inoculation injury whole studying the virus. The 1994 case in Cote d'Ivoire was in a scientist who conducted an autopsy on a wild chimpanzee found dead with signs of haemorrhagic disease. The 1995 Kikwit outbreak was thought to have occurred after the index case handled a monkey and smoked its flesh. This outbreak permitted the study of household secondary cases. All those affected had directly cared for cases of Ebola Fever, there were no identified secondary cases in household members who had no contact with the case. This suggests that airborne spread does not take place in households.
