Vaccine protects monkeys from Ebola infection
(AP) For the first time, a vaccine protected monkeys against the lethal Ebola virus, raising doctors' hopes of developing a means of inoculating people against the terrifying disease. Four macaques that were injected with the experimental vaccine suffered no ill effects after being exposed to normally lethal doses of the virus. Four macaques that were not inoculated died within six days.

A Plague Upon Our Houses
Infectious Diseases, Once Beaten by Miracle Drugs, Are Back Stronger Than Ever and Closer to Home, Warn UW Experts
by Julie Rathbun New York, 1990 : Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets , dies suddenly from a virulent infection impervious to antibiotics. Milwaukee, 1993 : Approximately 400,000 people are sickened by an obscure intestinal parasite, cryptosporidium, contaminating the city's water supply. Seattle, 1994 : Eleven children with chicken pox contract a "flesh eating" bacterial infection requiring most to have surgery to remove infected tissue. Zaire, 1995 : An estimated 244 people die from Ebola, a hemorrhagic fever virus for which there is no cure. It is spread through contact with bodily fluids and secretions. Such headlines shouldn't surprise us. Throughout history, infectious diseases have ravaged humanity, from the bubonic plague or "Black Death" of the 14th century to the "Spanish influenza" epidemic of the early 20th century. But Americans have become complacent about infectious disease. First came the discovery of penicillin in 1929 (followed by other antibiotics); then the start of widespread vaccination programs and improved sanitation and education. The scourge of smallpox was wiped off the face of the Earth in 1977; we assumed others would follow. In the 1980s, our world began to change. Newspaper headlines carried words like AIDS

by Dr. Leonard Horowitz The iatrogenic and genocidal theories of AIDS are meticulously explored within the social and political context of this stormy period of American military science. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) activities and foreign policy initiatives in Central Africa in response to the alleged threats posed by communism, black nationalism, and Third World populations are examined. The important roles played by political leaders including National Security Advisor Dr. Henry Kissinger, Department of Health, Education and Welfare secretaries Frank Carlucci, Jr. and Joseph Califano, presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, and economic notables Nelson and Laurence Rockerfeller are considered. The text hauntingly dissects the potential motives and administrative mechanisms underlying the prevalent belief that HIV and Ebola may have been deliberately deployed, and that the AIDS epidemic may be accomplishing what was desired. Ebola death toll reaches 120
Story Tools BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (Reuters) The death toll in a deadly Ebola outbreak has risen to 120 in the northwestern Republic of Congo, the central African country's health ministry said on Wednesday. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library Men's Health Women's Health Care for the whole family An official at the ministry said 135 cases had been recorded since the virus, which has no known cure, struck in January in the dense forests of Cuvette-Ouest, some 700 kilometers (440 miles) north of the capital, Brazzaville. Authorities say the disease has now almost been brought under control. Ebola is passed on by infected body fluids and kills between 50 and 90 percent of victims, depending on the strain. It starts with a high fever and headache and can lead to massive internal bleeding. Authorities have cordoned off the affected areas and local people have been told not to touch bodies of those who have died and not to eat primates. Scientists believe the outbreak was triggered by the consumption of infected monkey meat. Bush meat is a staple among forest communities, and a delicacy in many cities.

WHO fears Ebola spread
Most of the suspected victims were related to one of the confirmed cases MAKOKOU, Gabon An outbreak of the killer Ebola disease in Gabon could spread to neighbouring countries, health chiefs have warned. The World Health Organisation, which has sent a team of experts to the remote north-western Mekambo district, said two of the 11 suspected Ebola deaths have been confirmed. They said at least one woman infected with the deadly disease had crossed the border with the Congo Republic. Ebola causes up to 90 percent of its victims to bleed to death in a matter of days and has no known cure or vaccine. Four villages in Gabon have been put under quarantine but health workers said they had not been able to entirely stop villagers' movements. District health official Firmin Tcheka told Reuters: "The border is porous and people naturally move from one village to the other.

Ebola outbreak kills 100 in Congo
Story Tools BRAZZAVILLE, Congo Republic (Reuters) The deadly Ebola virus has killed 100 people in the remote forests of Congo Republic and wiped out nearly two-thirds of the gorillas in a reserve. "We have reached the fateful figure of 100 dead," Congo's Health Minister Alain Moka said on Tuesday at a ceremony to accept donations to help fight the outbreak. The latest Ebola epidemic to hit the central African country struck in January in the dense forest region of Cuvette-Ouest about 440 miles north of the capital Brazzaville. Ebola is passed on by infected body fluids and kills between 50 and 90 percent of its victims. It starts with a high fever and headache and can lead to massive internal bleeding. "The government has already spent more than $500,000 to put in place the logistics needed to help the stricken people but the state alone cannot help," Moka said. "We must have the support of everybody and the international community."

Human Ebola vaccine trial begins
Phase I safety test of the multimodal vaccine's DNA component will last 1 year
By Jeffrey M. Perkel The leader of the team that designed an Ebola vaccine and tested it in macaque monkeys expects to see no adverse effects in the human trial The subjects will be monitored for 1 year, but Nabel anticipates no adverse effects, because other DNA vaccines have already proven safe. Plus, the vaccine contains no infectious materials from Ebola virus. Instead, he told The Scientist The current trial is just the first test of a vaccine that Nabel's group described 3 years ago in a report to Nature , detailing the first successful test of an Ebola vaccine in a nonhuman primate. That trial employed a prime/boost strategy. Once a month for 3 months, macaque monkeys were injected with plasmid DNA encoding Ebola virus glycoprotein and nucleoprotein to prime the immune system. Three months later (5 months after the first DNA injection), the monkeys received an injection of crippled adenovirus containing the glycoprotein gene to boost the immune response. The team then challenged the vaccinated animals 3 months later with a lethal dose of Ebola virus (at 8 months). Significantly, the vaccine induced both humoral and cellular immune responses in the animals. For instance, recognizing that the prime/boost strategy's multipart regimen could prove impractical, Nabel's team in August described an accelerated vaccine in another
