This website is dedicated to the memory of
Deborah Simone Fradin

"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fattest one of all?" If you can relate to the above saying, you are not alone. Thousands of women and an increasing number of men look in the mirror everyday and hate what they see. I chose to use the phrase "Mirror, mirror on the wall" because I first heard it used in a fairy tale. Fairy tales are not real, just like the image you see staring back at you in that mirror is not real. When you look in the mirror, you are seeing what your eating disorder wants you to see, you are not seeing the true picture. Eating disorders afflict millions of people, thousands of which will die from them yearly. There is good news though, eating disorders can be beaten. You do not have to be a prisoner to this anymore. You have the power within yourself to beat this and you will. Recovery takes a lot of time and hard work, but in the end it is all worth it. You will finally be free and you will love yourself. When recovery happens you will be able to look in the mirror and say, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest one of all"

The National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC) is a Toronto-based, non-profit organization, established in 1985 to provide information and resources on eating disorders and weight preoccupation. NEDIC began as a result of the concerted efforts of a group of health-care providers. Based on a national needs-assessment undertaken in 1983 by the Health League of Canada, a proposal was made for initial funding of an information centre which would focus on eating disorders and socio-cultural factors influencing the health-related behaviour of women. 12. Teenagers And Eating Disorders
Gives information about insecurities and possible causes, as well as tips on how to avoid the problem.
http://www.mirror-mirror.org/teens.htm
Teenagers are under a lot of pressure to succeed and fit in. Many spend a lot of time worrying about what others think and they desperately try to conform to society's unattainable "ideal" body image. They are lead to believe that if they are thin, they will be accepted. Since many teenagers are constantly buying teen or fashion magazines, the images of emaciated models appearing in those magazines only reenforces their belief that in order to be happy, successful and accepted, they must be thin. Television shows like Beverly Hills 90210 also leads them to believe that they must be thin. They watch these shows all the time and many will do anything to try and look like the actresses on these shows. Many teenagers need a role model and someone to look up to. Unfortunately, too many of them chose fashion models or actresses as their role models, they paste pictures of them all over their rooms, and some will resort to dangerous methods of weight control to try and look like their idols. Schools should also take an active role in preventing eating disorders by educating the students on the dangers of eating disorders and helping to teach them that in order to succeed in life, their weight does not matter. You do not have to be thin, in order to succeed in the career of your choice. Teachers and school counselors should also be made aware of the signs to look for. If eating disorders are caught early, and the person is willing to accept the help that is available to them, the chances of recovery are greater.

Anorexia Nervosa
The most common element surrounding ALL Eating Disorders is the inherent presence of a low self esteem Anorexia Nervosa
Those who are suffering with this illness have a low self-esteem and often a tremendous need to control their surroundings and emotions. This Eating Disorder is a unique reaction to a variety of external and internal conflicts, such as stress, anxiety, unhappiness and feeling like life is out of control. Anorexia is a negative way to cope with these emotions. "...starvation fills a void inside when it's approval from you I crave. The desire for food is gone and you are there again... yelling... so negative. Times like this filled with the pounding urge to run far away and disappear..." The person suffering with Anorexia may be abnormally sensitive about being perceived as fat, or have a massive fear of becoming fat though not all people living with Anorexia have this fear. They may be afraid of losing control over the amount of food they eat, accompanied by the desire to control their emotions and reactions to their emotions. With a low self-esteem and need for acceptance they will turn to obsessive dieting and starvation as a way to control not only their weight, but their feelings and actions regarding the emotions attached. Some also feel that they do not deserve pleasure out of life, and will deprive themselves of situations offering pleasure (including eating).
