The following terms are legitimate; they all came straight from Dorland's Medical Dictionary , and a few other reliable medical resources. One could theoretically spend a lifetime researching the fanciful names given to diseases, syndromes and various signs and tests. I have included a few mini-definitions for clarity, and so the MT can cross reference and ensure that the dictator is talking about the same subject. For more complete research, the MT should consult a medical dictionary and/or the Merck Manual , depending on the amount of information wanted or needed. These terms pertain to both human and animal conditions. None of the following are named for the person who first described the phenomenon, nor are any of them trade names. It is certainly interesting how many human conditions are named for sports, whether or not incurred during sports activities. Some human symptoms are named for the various animal characteristics they resemble. Those that are actually veterinary terms are marked "(vet)." It seems that doctors are not immune to the American penchant for fanciful language. A B C D ... Case 1 A term newborn male infant is noted to have unilateral hydronephrosis on prenatal ultrasound. At 3 days of age, a renal and bladder ultrasound shows a normal right kidney, and a moderately severe left renal hydronephrosis, with no dilation of the ureter. The bladder is normal. A voiding cystourethrogram is obtained at 6 weeks of age which shows no evidence of vesicoureteral reflux, and no posterior urethral valves. Urinalysis, complete blood count, electrolytes, BUN, and creatinine are normal. At 4 weeks of age, a Mag3 renal scan with furosemide (Lasix) washout shows equal split function (right kidney 50%, left kidney 50%). The t-1/2 (washout half time) shows normal washout on the right, and prolonged washout on the left. The patient is placed on surveillance with serial renal ultrasounds and renal scans for the next 2 years. At 2 years of age, he develops left sided abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, without fever or chills. A renal ultrasound shows worsening left hydronephrosis and a renal scan shows diminished left renal split function to 35% (the right split function is now 65%), and markedly prolonged left renal half-time. The right renal half-time is normal. He undergoes a left pyeloplasty at 2 years of age, and does well post operatively. A Mag3 renal scan is done 3 months postoperatively, which shows the left renal split function to have returned to 45% (right 55%), with the washout half time to have normalized. A renal ultrasound postoperatively shows only minimal residual hydronephrosis.

Abdominal muscles Definition: Prune belly syndrome is a group of congenital anomalies characterized by three major findings:
  • Deficient development of abdominal muscles (causing the skin of the abdomen to wrinkle like a prune) Undescended testicle Urinary tract anomalies
Alternative Names: Eagle-Barrett syndrome Causes And Risk: The underlying causes of prune belly syndrome are unknown. 96-97% of cases are boys. Expectant mothers carrying affected infants may develop varying degrees of oligohydramnios (insufficient amniotic fluid ) that make it likely the infant will have lung problems. (See also Potter syndrome The newborn infant has a wrinkled abdomen that looks like a prune. This is because the abdomen swelled with fluid in the womb, then lost that fluid after birth, leading to wrinkles of excess skin. The appearance is accentuated by the lack of adequate abdominal musculature. Many infants are either stillborn or die within the first few weeks of life from severe lung or kidney problems, or a combination of congenital anomalies.

Prune Belly Syndrome RELATED SERVICES Urology What is prune belly syndrome?
Prune belly syndrome is also known as triad syndrome or Eagle-Barrett syndrome. It is characterized by a triad of abnormalities that include the following:
  • absence of abdominal muscles
  • undescended testicles - a condition seen in newborns whereby one (or both) of the male testes has not passed down into the scrotal sac
  • an abnormal, expanded bladder and problems in the upper urinary tract, which may include the bladder, ureters, and kidneys
Because of the substantial involvement of the urinary tract, children with prune belly syndrome are usually unable to completely empty their bladders and have serious bladder, ureter, and kidney impairment.
A child with prune belly syndrome may also have other birth defects. Most commonly, these defects involve the skeletal system, intestines, and heart. Girls may have defects in their external genitalia, as well.
Some infants who have prune belly syndrome may be stillborn or die within a few months of birth.
