Pituitary dwarfism
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: Pituitary dwarfism involves abnormally short stature with normal body proportions caused by a deficiency of growth hormone.
Alternative Names: Growth hormone deficiency; Panhypopituitarism; Dwarfism
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Abnormally short height in childhood may be due to dysfunction of the pituitary gland causing underproduction of growth hormone . A variety of genetic syndromes, a tumor in the pituitary gland , the absence of the pituitary gland, or trauma are some of the known causes of this condition, but in most cases no underlying cause of the deficiency is found.
Growth retardation may become evident in infancy and persists throughout childhood. The "growth curve," demonstrated by plotting sequential height measurements on a standardized growth chart, may range from flat (no growth) to very shallow (minimal growth). Normal puberty may or may not occur, depending on the degree of pituitary insufficiency (inability of the pituitary to produce adequate hormone levels other than growth hormone).

related terms: pituitary hypofunction, hypopituitarism, hyposomatotropism What is pituitary dwarfism? This rare disorder is a result of reduced function of the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain. This small gland secretes hormones necessary for normal growth and development. Signs are apparent at a young age and are associated with slowed development and growth. How is pituitary dwarfism inherited? In German shepherds and Carnelian bear dogs the disorder is inherited as a simple autosomal recessive trait. The mode of inheritance has not been demonstrated for other affected breeds. What breeds are affected by pituitary dwarfism This disorder is rare. Inheritance has been shown in the German shepherd, and the Carnelian/Karelian bear dog. For many breeds and many disorders, the studies to determine the mode of inheritance or the frequency in the breed have not been carried out, or are inconclusive. We have listed breeds for which there is a general consensus among those investigating in this field and among veterinary practitioners, that the condition is significant in this breed. What does pituitary dwarfism Breeders or owners will usually notice abnormalities by 2 or 3 months of age. The signs caused by a deficiency of pituitary growth hormone (somatotropin) include slow growth rate, retained puppy coat and eventual hairlessness, darkening of the skin, delayed eruption of permanent teeth, suppressed immune responses, and an altered mental state. These pups are proportionate dwarves - that is, they are of small stature but normal proportions - and they often have a shrill bark.

Stow youngsters get lesson on dwarfism and sensitivity
By Maureen Costello, Globe Correspondent, 11/27/2003 STOW Donning jeans and a stylish hot-pink blouse, Lindsey Hawkes walked to the front of her school assembly, accepted a microphone from principal Ron Larrivie, and led 250 schoolmates in song. ADVERTISEMENT The 7-year-old did not miss a note in "God Bless America," the song she learned after repeatedly hearing it in the wake of Sept. 11. When she was finished, Lindsey returned the mike and blended back in with her first-grade classmates at Pompositticut School. The assembly was the first installment of the CARES program, an initiative to promote sensitivity, awareness, and social skills among kindergartners through second-graders at Pompo and third- through fifth-graders at the Center School. Lindsey's parents, Don and Lori Hawkes, beamed along the sidelines with about 20 other parents who took advantage of the open invitation last Friday. They were not only the proud parents of the soloist, they were also responsible for the presence of the guest speaker, Barbara Spiegel, a board member of the 8,000-member Little People of America.
