The Height Gap
Dwarfism is a medical or genetic condition that usually results in an adult height of four feet ten or shorter, among both men and women, although in some cases a person with a dwarfing condition may be slightly taller than that. By far the most frequently diagnosed cause of short stature is achondroplasia, a genetic condition that results in disproportionately short arms and legs. The average height of adults with achondroplasia is four feet. According to information compiled by the Greenberg Center at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and by the late Lee Kitchens, a past president of Little People of America , the frequency of occurrence of the most common types of dwarfism is as follows:
  • Achondroplasia (one per 26,000 to 40,000 births) SED (one per 95,000 births) Diastrophic dysplasia (one per 110,000 births)

Health education or patient education is important aspect of disease management program. Even some programs, especially some chronic disease management can go further and introduced self-management for some aspect of illness. Good example is management of arthritis. There are a variety of models for both formal and informal self-management. However, the core concepts involve engagement in self-care, improved self-monitoring, interactions with healthcare professionals and coping with disease. Self-management programs are mostly provided to people with chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes, and some skin diseases. Patient education and self-management programs are aim to improve the efficiency and quality of the healthcare process and overall improve quality of life. It is not really about reduction in doctor visits or clinic attendances. Even sometime, an improved healthcare process can include more frequent use of services because of improved compliance. Heterochrony and island dwarfism
home topics evolution dwarfism I'm reading through the volume Integrative Paths to the Past (Corruccini and Ciochon, eds.) because of a piece of work I've been doing, and I came across this interesting passage in the contribution by Elizabeth Vrba, titled "An hypothesis of heterochrony in response to climatic cooling and its relevance to early hominid evolution." Conversely, I suggest that acceleration and hypomorphism often evolve in warmer environments. In fact, the celebrated correlation of dwarfing of mammals on islands may well have less to do with the absence of predators and resource depletion (e.g., Lomolino 1985) than with the fact that island refugia for large mammals come into being in times of global warming and sea level risenamely, maximal warming periodsand islands at all times enjoy a more mesic climate than the mainland uplands of the ancestors. Prothero and Sereno's (1982) results for North American fossil rhinoceroses is relevant: Dwarf species were associated with mesic forest-swamp "climatic islands" on the Miocene land mass, surrounded by savanna uplands on which larger rhinoceros taxa lived (Vrba 1994:355-356).

The study was begun after a litter of seven puppies was whelped; five of which showed some form of dwarfism. A search has begun to locate other dogs medically diagnosed with dwarfism. Pedigree analysis of the known affected dogs shows some common ancestry among them. However, most of the general population of Chesapeakes also shares common ancestry with these affected dogs; therefore pedigree analysis alone is not sufficient to eliminate the gene from the population. It is hoped that a genetic marker or mutation test can be developed to detect carriers. This study is privately funded, so no ACC funds are needed; however, the researchers are looking for affected dogs in order to help with development of a gene test. Anyone with an affected dog can contact:

Pituitary dwarfism is a condition of growth retardation in which patients are very short, but have normal body proportions. Some children who have this condition go through delayed, but normal puberty and have normal reproductive capabilities. Others never become sexually mature. Description
Pituitary dwarfism is caused by a dysfunction of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is a pea-sized mass of tissue at the base of the brain. Functionally, it is divided into two parts, the anterior pituitary and the posterior pituitary. The anterior pituitary secretes growth hormone (GH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and prolactin. The posterior pituitary releases antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin. There are two types of pituitary dwarfism:
    • Panhypopituitarism due to a deficit of all of the anterior pituitary hormones. There is proportionate, generalized slow growth and patients do not go through puberty. This accounts for about 2/3 of pituitary dwarfism cases.

    Genetic mechanisms in equine dwarfism
Dwarfism is considered rare in large horses and considered fare more common in USA miniature horses, especially among those who breed horses with known dwarf ancestors. Some suggest that equine incest may contribute to horse dwarfism and some breeders report dwarfism as "the result of an accidental breeding between a full brother & sister" While the genetic mechanism remains unknown, it appears that USA miniature horse breeding programs vary widely in dwarfism rates and some suffer from very high reproductive mortality. The link between genetics and miniature horse dwarfism is not surprising, given that the hallmark of dwarfism is a small size. Pedigree does not guarantee safe breeding. One author claims that "bug" (their dwarf horse) had a champion AMHA pedigree: " This is the product of poor breeding management . This little gal has a tremendous pedigree with at least two AMHA national champions in her near background. The gene that causes dwarfism can be found in every pedigree, pet quality, show quality, as well as the "taller" minis." Genetics experts and dwarfism So how do we explain the wide variation in dwarf production rates between miniature horse breeds and individual breeding programs? There is what some experts say:

The term midget is usually applied to physically well-proportioned dwarfs. The term pygmy is applied to people whose shortness of stature is a racial trait and not caused by disease. Cretinism , a result of a disease of the thyroid gland , is the cause of most dwarfism in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Other causes of dwarfism are Down syndrome , a congenital condition with symptoms similar to those of cretinism; achondroplasia, a disease characterized by short extremities resulting from absorption of cartilaginous tissue during the fetal stage ( see Fetus ); hypochondroplasia, a milder form of achondroplasia; spinal

Keywords Agapornis fischeri , Dwarfism, Chondrodysplasia, Congenital malformation Introduction Although chondrodysplastic dwarfism is a common congenital disease of humans, cattle, dogs, and occasionally other species, it has rarely been reported in caged aviary birds. Avian cases of dwarfism have been described in fowl, quail, pheasant, black-headed gulls, and a great- crested flycatcher, and anecdotal accounts of dwarf birds have been mentioned sporadically. In humans and dogs, chondrodysplasia is divided into proportionate and disproportionate types depending on limb length compared to body size. Different genes are involved in each syndrome. In chickens, dwarfism is a sex-linked recessive trait, while in quail it is autosomal recessive.
