dwarfism and Short Stature Syndromes. Definitions. dwarfism ( n ) a genetic condition resulting in short stature. Dwarf ( n ) a diminutive human being
http://www.twu.edu/inspire/Fact_Sheets/dwarf.htm
Dwarfism and Short Stature Syndromes Definitions: Dwarfism ( n ): a genetic condition resulting in short stature Dwarf ( n ): a diminutive human being
  • An extremely little person who is of proportionate stature. A small or miniature version of something A class of small objects
  • The Little People of America (LPA) define dwarfism as an adult height of 4’10" or shorter, among both men and women, as the result of a medical or genetic condition. Medical Prognosis: The medical criteria for dwarfism vary. Short stature in dwarfs is due to a genetic condition. The majority of little people demonstrate normal intelligence, have an average life span, and enjoy good health. Conditions and severity do vary among individuals. Terminology: Today individuals with short stature generally prefer to be described as 'Dwarfs' or 'Little People.' However, it is more important to respect the human choice, and ask them their preference, or better yet, just use their name. The term midget is very offensive and no longer used. Intelligence: Incidence of mental retardation among little people is the same as "average-size" population. Three conditions of short stature that are linked to learning disabilities and/or mental retardation are Turner syndrome, Noonan syndrome, and Morquio syndrome.

    Little chance
The Station Agent and its star, Peter Dinklage, cast dwarfism in a new, well-rounded light
BY DAN KENNEDY NEAR THE BEGINNING of The Station Agent , a film that makes its Boston debut on Friday, there is a moment that says much about what it’s like to be different — and about how easy it is for someone to fall into the trap of imbuing his particular difference with more meaning than it warrants. Fin, played by the dwarf actor Peter Dinklage, is walking along the side of the road when an SUV driven by Olivia (Patricia Clarkson) careens out of control and forces him to dive into the brush. Later in the day, it happens again. Their first encounters — she all nervous, twitching apologies, he just trying to get away — are revealing. Fin obviously believes Olivia swerved off the road because she freaked out at seeing a dwarf. But she — and we — know that she is merely a terrible driver.

    Dwarfism
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Dwarfism Dwarfism is a condition in which a person, animal or plant is much below the ordinary size of the species. When applied to people, it implies not just extreme shortness, but a degree of disproportion. Dwarfism is now rarely used as a medical term and is sometimes (but not always) considered impolite or pejorative. Today, the term little person tends to be preferred. According to the Little People of America the human definition of this term is stated as such "a medical or genetic condition that usually results in an adult height of 4'10" or shorter, among both men and women, although in some cases a person with a dwarfing condition may be slightly taller than that." Of the hundreds of causes of dwarfism in humans, most are genetic, and most involve single gene variations that affect the structure or metabolism of bone, cartilage, or connective tissue. This class of disorder is referred to by physicians as skeletal dysplasias . Chondrodystrophies, chondrodysplasias, osteochondrodystrophies are also used (fairly interchangeably) in the medical literature to refer to most of these conditions. In many of these conditions, the bones are the primary affected body part, and the person is otherwise healthy. In many others, the genetic difference affects other body systems, causing unusual features or other major problems.

Dino Dwarf: Island living may have led to ancient downsizing
Sid Perkins The new species falls in the group of plant-eating dinosaurs called sauropods, which included the largest land creatures that ever lived. Brachiosaurus , a moderate-size sauropod, grew to a length of 23 m and tipped the scale at around 50 tons, says Martin Sander of the University of Bonn in Germany. Brachiosaurus ' thighbone alone could measure 2.2 m, taller than basketball star Shaquille O'Neal. Bones of the newly discovered German sauropod, which is closely related to Brachiosaurus , are considerably smaller. Paleontologists have recovered about 650 bones that represent 10 or so members of the yet-to-be-named species. Fossil thighbones measure up to 62 centimeters in length, a typical size for juvenile sauropods, says Sander. However, detailed analyses suggest that the largest of the new finds came from adults. The German sauropod's miniaturization resulted from an island-dwelling lifestyle, Sander and his colleagues proposed at a meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Denver last week. Scientists have observed a correlation between the area of a landmass and the body size of the largest animals that live there (SN: 12/01/01, p. 343: Available to subscribers at

Dwarfism is deliberately produced and perpetuated in certain species (e.g., in breeding miniature dogs and cultivating dwarf plants). Among humans, dwarfism usually results from a combination of genetic factors and endocrine malfunction. It can also be caused, however, by acquired conditions, such as kidney disease. This type of dwarf, who is completely normal except for size, is commonly called a midget. Cretinism is a type of dwarfism accompanied by mental retardation and distortion of the body, resulting from an insufficiency of thyroid hormone. Unlike cretinism and pituitary dwarfism (which are thought to be caused by a combination of heredity and endocrine malfunction), achondroplastic dwarfism is the result of a completely hereditary, dominant genetic trait. Typically, the growth of the limbs is stunted, but the size of the trunk and mental capacity are normal. Humans who range in height from 2 to 4 ft (5.08–10.16 cm) are generally classified as dwarfs. However, small size that is an inherited characteristic of race (such as among African Pygmies) is not considered to be dwarfism since the individuals in such groups are physiologically normal.

Dyschondrosteoses Also known as diastrophic dysplasia or epiphyseal dysostosis, diastrophic dwarfism is another example of rhizomelic dwarfism. It is autosomal recessive in transmission. The term diastrophic characterizes the twisted scoliosis in this disease. The suspect gene is the diastrophic dysplasia sulfate transporter. This is a rare form of rhizomelic dwarfism, and the incidence is unknown. Overall, cartilage is malformed, resulting in several characteristic radiographic abnormalities. This cartilage abnormality often leads to death from tracheomalacia. If the patient survives infancy, there is a normal lifespan. Scoliosis is not present at birth but often is progressive, especially in the early teens. Treatment of the scoliosis includes bracing and occasionally, spinal fusion. Progressive cervical kyphosis can also occur with subluxation of the cervical spine which can result in spinal cord compression. The characteristic deformity is the "hitchhikers" thumb. At birth, the spine may only be slightly scoliotic. However, there is relentless development of a severe kyphoscoliosis of the lumbar spine. As in achondroplasia, a broad pelvis is encountered with narrowed interpediculate distances in the spine. 25 - 50 % of patients have a cleft palate. Due to inflammation, the ear enlarges, resulting in a "cauliflower" deformity.

Chondrodysplasia punctata [ Thanatophoric dwarfism ] Asphyxiating thoracic dysplasia Osteogenesis imperfecta Dyschondrosteoses Thanatophoric dwarfism results from a sporadic defect in the fibroblast growth factor-3 gene, a transmembrane regulator. The disease is lethal, usually shortly after birth due to respiratory failure. The incidence is approximately 1 in 10,000 births and is the most common lethal bone dysplasia. There are several characteristic radiographic findings, illustrated above. First, the disease is rhizomelic, with relative shortening of the humeri and femora. The femora are curved and in a classic "telephone-receiver" configuration. The ribs are short and horizontal and the thoracic cage is hypoplastic. The iliac wings are small and squared. Also, there is generalized flattening of the vertebral bodies. Also characteristic is the protuberant abdomen. REFERENCES Brodie SG, Kitoh H, Lipson M, Sifry-Platt M, Wilcox WR.
