Article introducing Pituitary dwarfism in the German Shepherd Dog.
    http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/6074/inheritance.html
Inheritance of Dwarfism (Plus - Known Carriers of Dwarfism) In a study conducted by E. Andresen and P. Willeberg (1976) (Pituitary dwarfism in German Shepherd Dogs additional evidence of simple autosomal recessive inheritance. Nord. Vet. Med.28: 481-6 They said that dwarfism may stem from any or all 3 of the following dogs; Hein v Richterbach, Casar vd Malmannsheide and Vello zd Sieben Faulen. They believed that at least 2 of the 3 dogs are carriers. Vello was said to be the ancestor of 7 of the 8 dwarfs in their study. The following are dogs, according to Willis ( The German Shepherd Dog - A Genetic History 1991) known to "carry" pituitary dwarfism. They are; Atstan Impresario, Dunmonaidh Junker, Warro vd Fichtenspitze, Hero v Grundel, Norbo v Grundel, Hasenway Putz, Iolanda Tell, Karlstadt Tumblin Dice, Persian War of Marlish, Masuta Piaute, Middross Sonny, Gundo vd Mordschau, Prima Zorba, Rosetown Jack, Sansarc Navigator, Shottersway Persephone, Nickel v Unterhain, and Uran v Wildersteiger Land. If you are reading this right now then chances are you have an interest in learning what dogs are involved in producing dwarfs so that you can avoid getting dwarfs in your litters. I have received numerous emails from breeders asking me to tell them how to do just that. Amazingly very few breeders that HAVE had dwarf pups are willing to come forward and produce information/pedigrees that will help me gather that information accurately enough to report it. That is, after all, what my research is about. Identifying what dogs are carriers and when bred together will produce dwarf pups.

Growth hormone deficiency can be categorized as either congenital (present at birth) or acquired. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top An abnormally short height in childhood may occur if the pituitary gland does not produce enough growth hormone . It can be caused by a variety of genetic mutations (such as Pit-1 gene, Prop-1 gene, growth hormone receptor gene, growth hormone gene), absence of the pituitary gland, or severe brain injury, but in most cases no underlying cause of the deficiency is found. Growth retardation may become evident in infancy and persist throughout childhood. The child's "growth curve," which is usually plotted on a standardized growth chart by the pediatrician, may range from flat (no growth) to very shallow (minimal growth). Normal puberty may or may not occur, depending on the degree to which the pituitary can produce adequate

    13. Dwarfism - What Is It?
Little People s Research Fund is the only health organization in the world supporting research for the special medical needs of Little People people
    http://www.lprf.org/dwarfism.html
Dwarfism is the result of the disproportionate growth of the skeleton. In most cases, dwarfism is genetically determined. We refer to those affected as "Little People." IMPACT OF DWARFISM Most Little People encounter progressive deformities during childhood. These deformities may lead to disability. In some instances, breathing difficulties, gradual paralysis and even death may result. IS THERE TREATMENT? Yes. As a result of treatment, deformities can be corrected and mobility returned. Affected individuals can become capable of independent living. Do I Know a Little Person? You probably do! Dwarfism can affect any baby born anytime, about 1 in 10,000 births. Most children with dwarfism are from average stature parents. ANY COUPLE CAN HAVE A CHILD WITH DWARFISM. Family history and parent's stature are usually not relevant to the child's dwarfism. Some syndromes are caused by genetic mutations at the moment of conception. Other syndromes are caused by the random combination of two recessive genes that may have been dormant for generations. (Examples of recessive genes are blue eyes or blond hair. The child must receive one recessive gene from each parent to show the trait.) Dwarfism is a general term covering a large number of medical conditions which result in short stature. In many cases, the condition is genetic. We refer to persons affected with dwarfism as "Little People", and the condition is often referred to as "short stature". It varies by condition; in addition to being short, the individual may have moderate to severe orthopaedic difficulties. Over time, gravity pulls on the skeleton of the Little Person and progressively leads to a loss of mobility. In the most severe cases, children may lose the ability to walk, and other functions are profoundly affected. In some cases, without early medical intervention, the child may die.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is the definition of dwarfism? A: Little People of America (LPA) defines dwarfism as a medical or genetic condition that usually results in an adult height of 4'10" or shorter, among both men and women, although in some cases a person with a dwarfing condition may be slightly taller than that. Q: What are the most common types of dwarfism? A: By far the most frequently diagnosed cause of short stature is achondroplasia , a genetic condition that results in disproportionately short arms and legs. (The term "disproportionate" is meant only as a point of comparison with people who do not have achondroplasia or any other type of skeletal dysplasia. The arms and legs of a person with achondroplasia are perfectly appropriate for someone with that genetic condition.) The average height of adults with achondroplasia is 4'0". Other genetic conditions that result in short stature include spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SED) diastrophic dysplasia pseudoachondroplasia hypochondroplasia , and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) . As one might expect from their names, pseudoachondroplasia and hypochondroplasia are conditions that are frequently confused with achondroplasia; diastropic dysplasia occasionally is, too. OI is characterized by fragile bones that fracture easily.
