Normal vision requires a moist healthy ocular surface. A sufficient quality of tears, a normal composition of the tear film, normal lid closure, and regular blinking are among the prerequisites to maintain a healthy ocular surface. What is Dry Eye?
Dry eye is a disorder of the tear film due to tear deficiency or excessive tear evaporation which causes damage to the interpalpebral ocular surface (i.e. exposed eye surface) and is associated with symptoms of ocular discomfort. This definition of dry eyes was adopted by the National Eye Institute workshop on dry eyes. The eye becomes dry either because there is not enough tears being produced or because there is abnormally high rate of evaporation of tears. Dry Eyes Evaporative Dry Eye Environmental factors
Central heating (forced air dry heat), hair dryer, car windscreen demisting, air travel, dry climates, wind, air pollution (cigarette smoke), contact lens wear

Dry Eye Symptoms and Treatment
Dry eye is a condition characterized by loss of water from the tear film . As a result, the tear film becomes more concentrated. I think that most of us will remember "osmosis" from their high school chemistry class. Well, that’s what happens in dry eye —when the tear film becomes more concentrated it pulls water out of the surface of the eye, making it dry. When the tear film loses water and becomes more concentrated, we say that it's "osmolarity" is increased. If you have dry eyes you experience sandy-gritty irritation or burning in your eyes that generally gets worse as the day goes on. There are two general ways that someone can get dry eyes —decreased tear production or increased tear evaporation. Production can go down from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogren’s syndrome , or from any condition that decreases sensation on the surface of the eye—things like long-term contact lens wear corneal surgery LASIK and certain viruses.

Thyroid Eye Disease (Graves' Disease)
What is the Thyroid Gland?
The thyroid gland is located in the neck. It manufactures two thyroid hormones that are essential for metabolism and growth. The thyroid takes iodine from the food we eat and uses it to make thyroid hormones. If thyroid hormones are in short supply, a person feels sluggish, has a slow heartbeat, and can even feel depressed. Doctors call this condition hypothyroidism. If a newborn has hypothyroidism, the baby can develop a condition called cretinism. The baby may have slowed development and poor intelligence unless the condition is corrected.
Too much thyroid hormone is called hyperthyroidism and is also a problem. This condition is almost the exact opposite of hypothyroidism. The individual has a fast heartbeat, weight loss, nervousness, and heat intolerance. In addition, hyperthyroidism can affect the eye.
One of the conditions that results in hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease. This condition afflicts a great many people. In this disease, the thyroid gland enlarges and releases too much thyroid hormone. The person can become restless and overactive, and the heart often races.

What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
(Keratoconjunctivitis sicca)
Dry eye is a general term used to describe a heterogeneous group of diseases resulting from inadequate wetting of the cornea and conjunctiva by the precorneal tear film (PCTF). Millions of people worldwide suffer from dry eye. Despite its high prevalence, dry eye is not always easy to diagnose. The vast majority of patients have symptoms that are mild to moderate in severity. Although these patients are genuinely suffering discomfort, objective signs of dry eye may be missed, and without proper diagnosis, patients may not receive the attention and treatment that this condition warrants. The signs and symptoms of dry eye can be misinterpreted as evidence of other conditions such as infectious, allergic, or irritative conjunctivitis.
What causes Dry Eye?
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF DRY EYE SYNDROMES
Dry eye conditions are classified as various types of abnormalities that can lead to insufficient wetting of the corneal surface. These classifications are:
  • Abnormalities of the aqueous layer Abnormalities of the mucin layer Abnormalities of the lipid layer Abnormalities of the corneal epithelium Abnormalities of the lids
Abnormalities of the aqueous layer
Insufficient production of the aqueous component of the tear film is the most common cause of dry eye. The resulting condition, known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), is usually due to decreased tear production by the accessory lacrimal glands. Inflammation of the lacrimal glands, a common cause of dry eye, may also be accompanied by inflammation and drying of other mucous membranes, particularly those in the mouth, vagina, and/or respiratory tract.

Dry Eye Syndrome
What Is Dry Eye?
Dry eye is a term used to describe a group of different diseases and conditions that result from inadequate wetting and lubrication of the eye. Although millions of people experience it, dry eye is not always easy to diagnose; it can easily be mistaken for other conditions such as infections or allergies. Believe it or not, excessive tearing caused by crying, cold weather, etc., can actually cause dry eye symptoms.
What Are Natural Tears?
Tears are a lot more complicated than they seem. They are the body's natural mechanism for protecting the surface of the eye from infection and from the corrosive effects of dirt, dust, and other airborne particles. They help to create a smooth corneal surface so vision stays clear and undistorted, and your eyes stay comfortable. Tears provide a wet, lubricated surface that sits atop the corneal epithelium (surface of the eye) There are three layers to the tear film. The oily, outer layer prevents evaporation. The middle layer is more watery. The inner layer contains mucous, and forms the bond between the tear film and the corneal epithelium. Tears are constantly being replenished, so adequate tear production is important to maintain the health, comfort, and infection-fighting capabilities of the eye. When the eye can't produce enough tears to perform these functions, artificial tears or occlusion (plugging of the tear ducts) may be necessary.

Some Causes of Dry Eyes
Dry eyes are more pronounced in persons who have reduced blink frequency, such as persons who do detailed technical work or those who work at a computer. Dry eye is sometimes worsened by contact lens wear or surgery.
Dry Eye Symptoms
Symptoms of dry eyes can include redness, dryness, burning, grittiness, excessive tearing, tired eyes, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light. Patients with dry eyes rate their discomfort at a level similar to the way heart patients rate chest pain.
Treatment of Dry Eyes
Many eye care professionals are not aware of the optimal treatment of dry eyes. When it comes to treatment of dry eyes, instillation of tears alone is often not sufficient. We take a multi-pronged approach to dry eyes, and address tear quality, production, distribution, drainage, and maintenance. Although there is no cure for dry eye, careful management by an eye care professional can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life. Learn more about our treatment approach.
