or unavailable in real life and doing so makes your mouth water profusely Purpose The NDA was founded to help people understand that drooling is normal and healthy and causes no serious mental or physical problems. We are here to answer questions, offer drooling guidelines and in severe cases assist individuals who may feel their drooling is out of control. We run a special program called Droolers Anonymous (DA). FAQ What is normal drooling? It varies from person to person. It may average anywhere from a few minutes a day, to a weekly or monthly drool session. In some cases folks go for months without it and then suddenly have a strong need to drool. What objects are most often drooled upon? Normally one drools over a person or object that is unobtainable or not available in real life. Most often celebrities, expensive or sought after items (toys), but it can be over someone we know, but have little or no contact with. Drooling is usually over a person of the opposite sex, but drooling over someone of the same sex does happen. Is Your Drooling Out of Control?

Excessive Drooling in Children with Disabilities
Sialorrhea, or excessive drooling, is a common problem found in children with neurological impairments. Cerebral palsy is found to be the most common disorder associated with drooling. Drooling beyond the age of 4 years is considered abnormal and can cause significant problems including aspiration, infection, increased amount of care required for the child (changing bibs, bathing), soiling of furniture, carpet, toys, and clothing of siblings and family members, minor to major skin irritations, and difficulty with social interactions and developing relationships. The management of sialorrhea is usually based on a team approach including an otolaryngologist, a speech pathologist, and a dentist. The speech pathologist determines the probability of improvement of oral-motor skills with time, therapy, or both. The dentist assesses structural abnormalities and health of the teeth and gums. The otolaryngologist examines for head and neck pathology, looks for upper airway obstruction, and determines the severity of the drooling problem. Once the team has evaluated the child, the type of treatment to be used is decided, however, it typically consists of a combination approach. The current treatments available are behavioral therapy, oral-motor therapy, medication, and surgery. Speech therapy and behavior modification techniques are said to show only modest improvements and do not have long-term effects, whereas, medications and surgery have a much higher rate of success.

Drooling Generally, around the 6th month you will begin to see the emerging of your infants first tooth! During this period of time you may notice that your baby will drool more often than normal. Drooling will appear more in some babies while it will be less in others. While your child is teething their gums will produce excess saliva. The saliva which is produced during drooling is designed to moisten and lubricate your baby's tender gums. Drooling serves to help make the teething process more bearable for your child. In some cases excess saliva will accumulate in an infants mouth and slowly drip down the back of their throats settling on the child's chest. This will cause a persistent cough and can be very harmful. This can occur when your baby is lying down. As a solution it may be helpful to use a small rubber suction which is designed to gently suck excess saliva from the babies mouth. Drooling can occur at various stages during the teething process producing excess saliva as each new tooth begins to emerge. Teething-Teething.com would like to recommend some very creative and unique baby bibs that will help you and your baby during this time. Please

Drooling
Overview Treatment Definition:
Saliva flowing outside the mouth.
Alternative Names: Salivation
Considerations: Drooling is generally caused by excess production of saliva, inability to retain saliva within the mouth, or problems with swallowing. Some people with drooling problems are at increased risk of inhaling saliva, food, or fluids into the lungs. However, this is unlikely to cause harm, unless the body's normal reflex mechanisms (such as gagging and coughing ) are also impaired.
Common Causes: Isolated drooling in infants and toddlers is normal and is unlikely to be a sign of either disease or complications. It may be associated with teething. Drooling in infants and young children may be exacerbated by upper respiratory infections and nasal allergies. Drooling associated with fever or trouble swallowing may be a sign of a more serious disease including:
  • Retropharyngeal abscess Peritonsillar abscess Tonsilitis Mononucleosis Strep throat
A sudden onset of drooling may indicate poisoning (especially by pesticides) or reaction to snake or insect venom. Some medications can cause drooling as well. Some neurological problems also cause drooling.

Drooling , Salivation and Nausea Drooling can occur for a number of reasons in cats. Probably the most commonly identified reasons are gum or teeth disorders. Oral ulcers can sometimes cause excessive salivation. Problems that lead to nausea, such as renal failure or gastrointestinal disease also cause excessive salivation. Some cats salivate excessively when they are nervous or stressed. This is a common reaction to oral medications and application of flea control products, too. Your vet can help sort through these possibilities and hopefully find a treatable cause. Foaming at the mouth or excessive salivation is common when cats have ingested something more noxious than they expected it to be, when they are nervous, when they have been sprayed with a spray containing alcohol (many flea sprays are alcohol based), when they are nauseous and with a few diseases such as dental disease and calicivirus. There are probably other causes. A brief episode is probably related to ingesting something that was upsetting. I have seen this after one of my cats ate a spider. Licking toads will do this, too. Hair balls are obviously one cause of feeling nauseous. If you live in an area with heartworms it is another cause of the hacking and vomiting problem some cats have. Inflammatory bowel disease is another. Your vet can help sort through these, too. In general it is a good idea to consider pursuing a diagnosis of vomiting if it is occurring frequently and coughing is almost always abnormal.

London, Jack Told in the Drooling Ward
Genre Short Story Keywords Adoption Disability Empathy Hospitalization ... Patient Experience Summary The story is told by a man living in "the drooling ward," part of a California mental institution. The narrator has been in the ward over 25 years; he helps feed and care for the others. He calls himself a "feeb"feeble mindedbut believes himself to be better than the droolers and certainly better than the stuck-up "epilecs" who though they seem normal throw such terrible fits. He feels as if he could get released from the hospital at any time, but he would rather stay. He tells of the two times he left the hospital. The first time, he was adopted by a couple that ran a ranch. He was forced to do many chores and the man beat him. He snuck off and returned to the home. The second time, he ran away with two "epilecs," but they were hungry and afraid of the dark so returned. Commentary London's attempt to get inside the mind of his narrator is intriguing. The narrator evokes both sympathy and laughter. London can't quite make him a serious character. The reader is positioned as an interpreter of the narrator. We know better than to say "epilecs" or "droolers" and feel skeptical of the narrator's claims that he could leave at any time. London's tale of mental retardation is thus different from other, similar tales that make the patient's view the limit of knowledge, in which there is no outside, rational view available. See, for example, Bessie Head's novel, A Question of Power (Pantheon, New York, 1974). Though London attempts to get inside the mind of his narrator, he remains aloof and judgmental.

    Drooling
What Your Symptom Is Telling You D rooling is one of those medically benign (yet socially suicidal) symptoms that doctors just can't figure out. They don't know how to stem the flow. But if drooling is your problem, knowing that doctors don't know what to do about it is no big help. You may, though, find some comfort in knowing why your faucets won't turn off. Some women notice a pronounced saliva increase shortly after they become pregnant, says Maureen Van Dinter, R.N., a senior clinical nurse specialist in the Department of Family Medicine and Practice at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The increased salivary flow causes a maddening difficulty in swallowing and speaking until the delivery, when the flow returns to normal as mysteriously as it increased. "Their cheeks puff up like a chipmunk's because of swollen salivary glands, and the insides of their mouths become very red and irritated," she says. An especially nasty taste often develops, and the women must almost constantly wipe their mouths to prevent saliva from dribbling down their chins.

    THE TURTLES OF TASMAN
    TOLD IN THE DROOLING WARD
(First published in The Bookman , Vol. 39, June, 1914)
Me? I'm not a drooler. I'm the assistant. I don't know what Miss Jones or Miss Kelsey could do without me. There are fifty-five low-grade droolers in this ward, and how could they ever all be fed if wasn't around? I like to feed droolers. They don't make trouble. They can't. Something's wrong with most of their legs and arms, and they can't talk. They're very low-grade. I can walk, and talk, and do things. You must be careful with the droolers and not feed them too fast. Then they choke. Miss Jones says I'm an expert. When a new nurse comes I show her how to do it. It's funny watching a new nurse try to feed them. She goes at it so slow and careful that supper time would be around before she finished shoving down their breakfast. Then I show her, because I'm an expert. Dr. Dalrymple says I am, and he ought to know. A drooler can eat twice as fast if you know how to make him. My name's Tom. I'm twenty-eight years old. Everybody knows me in the institution. This is an institution, you know. It belongs to the State of California and is run by politics. I know. I've been here a long time. Everybody trusts me. I run errands all over the place, when I'm not busy with the droolers. I like droolers. It makes me think how lucky I am that I ain't a drooler.

    Drooling, Excessive
    What is excessive drooling?
It is normal for babies to drool. As babies grow and mature, they are better able to manage their saliva. Most children don't drool when awake or asleep after the age of 4 years. However, children with neurological problems have difficulty making their muscles and nerves work properly. They have trouble swallowing saliva. Drooling is frequently seen in these children at older ages.
    Why should drooling be controlled?
Drooling can irritate the skin of the face, neck, and chest. It can also be embarrassing to the child.

I really have to thank my wife for discovering this group, if only because nobody would have ever linked to me otherwise. :) At the meetup I exchanged books with Rich Thomas , and stayed real late chatting with Rich, Jon Antwon , and Ealasaid on everything from Aqua Teen Hunger Force NaNoWriMo Update 1/28/05 : Indeed, I did take a shot , although I ended up with only 25,000 words).

    Fixing the system
No rest for the weary, since on Saturday, I did some tabling (badly) at the Palo Alto Art and Wine Festival for California Clean Money Campaign , which I blogged about earlier Californians for Electoral Reform , which is my other pet issue Speaking of which, for those of you awaiting, with bated breath, Part II of my posts on electoral reform Update 1/28/05 Part II . Cormac is one of the guys I went to that rave with, and he was trying to help his group of gamers select the next game, and so he took a poll and used the results. I help suggest some ways to interpret it.
