References Growth charts for children with Down syndrome can be found in the journal Pediatrics (81) 1988. The charts on this website were adopted from these charts using the method shown below. If you would like to read more about growth charts as they relate to Down syndrome, you may want to check out Woodbine House, 1995.
What do the Curves Mean? Each chart shows five percentile curves. An example of how percentiles work is as follows:
Suppose we sample 100 children with DS (all the same age) and arrange them according to ascending height. We can find the 10th percentile by plotting child number 10, and the 90th percentile would be the height of child number 90. If you plot your child's data, and he or she is shown as being in the 50th percentile, you could assume if we lined up 100 children your child's age, that 49 would be shorter and 50 taller than he or she.
Intrepretation For interpretation, Dr. Len Leshin suggests:

Definition
Down syndrome is the most common and readily identifiable chromosomal condition associated with mental retardation. It is caused by a chromosomal abnormality: for some unexplained reason, an accident in cell development results in 47 instead of the usual 46 chromosomes. This extra chromosome changes the orderly development of the body and brain. In most cases, the diagnosis of Down syndrome is made according to results from a chromosome test administered shortly after birth. Back to top
Incidence
Approximately 4,000 children with Down syndrome are born in the U.S. each year, or about 1 in every 800 to 1,000 live births. Although parents of any age may have child with Down syndrome, the incidence is higher for women over 35. Most common forms of the syndrome do not usually occur more than once in a family. Characteristics
There are over 50 clinical signs of Down syndrome, but it is rare to find all or even most of them in one person. Some common characteristics include:

The day after his graduation from Park School ( at the age of 21 ) Michael was given a scrap of watercolor paper and some paints just to keep him busy. Michael painted all day long and had to be coaxed to stop and eat lunch. Michael’s first watercolor was awesome!! When asked in utter amazement, "Michael, this is really good. Would you like to be an artist?" Michael replied, "I AM AN ARTIST." Michael exceeded everyone’s expectations when he was given the opportunity to paint independently, at his own pace, in his own studio space. He learned how to paint by painting every day. After finishing twenty-four color field paintings in watercolor and acrylics, Michael announced, "I want to paint cats.
