Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis
A diverticulum is a pouch or sac that bulges out from the lining of the wall of the intestine. When a person has one or more of these, it is called diverticulosis. They usually occur in the colon or large intestine. However, it may occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. About one-third of people over 50 and two- thirds of people over 80 have diverticulosis. Most people do not have any symptoms, so they do not know they have it. The most common complication is diverticulitis. This happens when a diverticulum becomes inflamed. Doctors believe that the major cause of diverticulosis is eating a low fiber diet over many years. In fact, the disease was first noticed in the United States at the same time that people began eating processed foods. Most processed foods are low in dietary fiber. The low fiber diet can cause constipation, which can cause increased pressure in the colon. The increased pressure is thought to cause weak spots that bulge and form the diverticula. Even though most people do not have any symptoms with diverticulosis, a few may have. The symptoms might be a mild abdominal pain that comes and goes, a change in bowel habits, bloating or gas. These are the same symptoms that a person with irritable bowel syndrome has. The two diseases can be confused. That is why it can be important to have x-rays or tests. The most common x-ray is the barium enema, or lower GI x-ray. A colonoscopy may also be done. It is done with a long thin-lighted tube with a telescope on the end that the provider puts in through the rectum. The tube or colonoscope is long enough to look at most of the bowel.

Diverticulitis
by Debra Wood, RN Definition Causes Risk Factors ... Organizations
Definition
Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection in a pouch that forms in the wall of the large intestine (colon). The pouch is called a diverticulum (multiple pouches are called diverticula). The presence of pouches without inflammation is called diverticulosis. Diverticulitis www.nucleusinc.com
Causes
The reason(s) why pouches form in the colon wall is not clear. Doctors believe when food moves too slowly through the bowel, a constant pressure is built up. This pressure increase then pushes along the colonic side walls resulting in pouch formations. Digested food or stool becomes trapped in one of the pouches and leads to inflammation and infection. The following may contribute to diverticulitis:
  • Low-fiber diet – fiber softens stools and makes them pass through the bowel more easily Increased pressure in the bowel from straining to pass a hard stool Defects in the colon wall Chronic constipation
Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition.

109. Digestive System: Diverticulosis And Diverticulitis
If the pouch becomes inflamed, the condition is known as diverticulitis. About 20 to 30 percent of patients with diverticulitis will need surgery.

Some people develop an abnormal pouch through the lining and muscles of the large intestines. The pouch usually has a narrow neck and bulging round end. The presence of such pouches is called diverticulosis. They most commonly occur in the colon, especially the final descending stretch of the colon. These pouches may be present in over one-third of all people over 60. Most go unnoticed. If the pouch becomes inflamed, the condition is known as diverticulitis. In most patients, the cause is probably a low fiber diet over many years. Over time small, hard stools increase pressure in the colon making the muscles rigid and brittle. There may be other factors involved. More than two-thirds of persons with diverticulosis do not have symptoms. Some patients have constipation, mild abdominal pain, or changing bowel habits. If there are only mild symptoms, the usual treatment is a high fiber diet. Good sources of fiber are fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods, and beans and legumes. Fiber supplements, such as bran powder or psyllium, are helpful. Diverticulitis ranges from a mild to serious disease. It usually causes an aching pain in the lower left side. There may be constipation or loose stools. Nausea and vomiting may occur. There may be a low-grade fever. Treatment of mild disease includes bed rest, stool softeners, a liquid diet, and antibiotics.
