Diet For Diverticulitis
Treatment of Diverticulitis
In 15-20 percent of patients, their bulging pouches or diverticula (a condition known as diverticulosis) become infected and cause diverticulosis, typically associated with sudden abdominal pain on the left side of the lower abdomen. If infection is the cause, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, cramping, and constipation may also be experienced.
Diet Modification to Prevent and Relieve Diverticulitis
The principal dietary approach to the prevention and relief of diverticulitis is the consumption of a high-fiber diet. This has specific health benefits for all diverticular conditions, including diverticulitis. A high-fiber diet along with mild pain medications will relieve symptoms in most cases.
What is Fiber
Fiber is the indigestible parts of fruits, vegetables and grains. One type dissolves in water (soluble fiber). It forms a soft, jelly-like mass in the intestines. Another type of fiber passes almost unchanged through the digestive tract (insoluble fiber). Both types help make stools soft and easier to pass. Fiber also prevents constipation.

    Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis is a painful condition that occurs when small sacs form in the colon and become inflamed. Although diverticulitis is most common and most serious in the elderly, it can afflict anyone. Susceptibility is greater for people who take prednisone or other drugs with side effects that affect the immune system and increase the chances of developing an infection. The first indication of diverticulitis is usually pain in the lower left area of the abdomen. You may also develop a fever from the infection, but do not rely on these symptoms to diagnose the condition yourself. You must see a physician to rule out the possibility of several other disorders that have similar symptoms and, if you do have diverticulitis, to judge how serious it is, since bad cases can land you in the hospital. Doctors believe that the primary cause of diverticulitis is a diet containing little fiber and lots of processed foods. The obvious way to prevent or treat diverticulitis is to improve your diet, although shifting too quickly to a high-roughage menu can irritate your colon even more. Once the problem has cleared up, you must slowly make dietary changes to prevent its return.

Treatment of Diverticulitis at Mayo Clinic
Mayo Clinic gastrointestinal specialists have extensive experience diagnosing and treating diverticulitis. Mayo Clinic doctors evaluate and treat more than 1,000 patients who have diverticulitis each year. This experience, coupled with ongoing research, helps Mayo doctors stay at the cutting edge of diagnosis and treatment.
    Diagnosis
Since other conditions may mimic diverticulitis, accurate diagnosis is an important first step to treating the condition. Initially, gastroenterologists seek to rule out diseases that cause similar symptoms, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Computed tomography (CT) scans provide images to diagnose diverticulitis and help physicians locate the inflammation. Doctors may check a patient's abdomen for tenderness and use blood tests to check for elevated white blood cell counts, a sign of infection.
    Treatment Options
Mild cases of diverticulitis can be treated with changes in diet, rest and antibiotics. But recurring diverticulitis and more serious cases may require surgery to remove the diseased portion of the colon. Read more about

    Treatment Options for Diverticulitis
Treatment of diverticulitis depends on the severity of symptoms and how many acute episodes the patient has experienced. If symptoms are mild, a liquid or low-fiber diet and antibiotics may be recommended. Those at risk of complications, or who experience recurrent attacks of diverticulitis, may require surgery to remove the diseased portion of the colon. The patient's age at the time of the attack may be an important factor in the treatment plan. Physicians at Mayo typically recommend that patients younger than 50 receive more aggressive treatment than patients older than 50. Studies have shown that younger patients may be at a higher risk for recurrent attacks and complications such as a perforated or abscessed colon.
    Self-care
If diverticulitis is treatable at home, patients should expect to remain quiet for a few days. Antibiotics will be prescribed to help kill the bacteria causing the infection. Patients will also temporarily need to avoid all whole grains, fruits and vegetables, so the colon can rest and heal. Once symptoms improve (often in 2 to 4 days) patients can gradually start increasing the amount of high-fiber foods in their diet.
    Hospitalization
About half of those who have diverticulitis require hospitalization and many need intravenous antibiotics. People may need to be hospitalized for vomiting, a fever above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, a high white blood cell count, or high risk of a bowel obstruction, peritonitis or other complications.

description Diverticulosis is the presence anywhere in the large colon of outpouchings of bowel lining through weak spots in the bowel muscle. It would be analogous to a an inner tube bulging through multiple holes in a tire. It can occur in any or all segments of the larger colon such as the ascending, transverse, descending, or sigmoid colon. Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection of these pouches. The appendix is a unique, elongated diverticula located at the beginning of the large colon. Inflammation or infection of a diverticula is similar to an appendicitis and has the potential to rupture if untreated. Acute diverticulitis that results in surgical treatment is staged by a classification developed by E. J. Hinchey. The Hinchey classification separates diverticulitis into four stages, I : inflammation around the diverticula itself but confined to the colon (peri-colic abscess), II: pelvic, intraabdominal or retroperitoneal abscess, III: generalized inflammation of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis) with frank pus, and IV: generalized peritonitis with stool in the abdominal cavity. Diverticulosis is asymptomatic in about 70% of people, 5-10% of cases are complicated with bleeding and 10-15% develop diverticulitis (

Diverticula, Diverticulosis, Diverticulitis: What's the Difference?
By: W. Grant Thompson, MD. Participate Diverticula occur throughout the gut, but by far the most common and most important are those that occur in the colon. The diverticula discussed herein are colonic diverticula. Their importance is frequently misunderstood. What are diverticula? A gut diverticulum (singular) is an outpouching of the wall of the gut to form a sac. Diverticula (plural) may occur at any level from esophagus to colon. A true diverticulum includes all three layers of the gut; the lining mucosa, the muscularis and the outer serosa. False diverticula are missing the muscularis and are therefore very thin walled. Colonic diverticula are typically false (Figure 1). Figure 1 : In this schematic diagram, intracolonic pressure increase due to annular muscular contraction can be seen pushing the mucosa through a defect in the colon muscle where, with the serosa, it forms the wall of a diverticulum. The defect is the route of an artery (not shown) that penetrates the colon muscle. Note the absence of muscle in the wall of the diverticulum. (From Thompson WG

Diverticulitis is an inflammatory condition where the area around the diverticula becomes irritated and attracts immune cells. It affects 10% to 20% of those with diverticula at some time. These areas can become infected. Risk factors are older age and history of diverticula or prior episodes of diverticulitis. Eating a high-fiber diet and avoiding seeds and nuts may prevent episodes.

    Definition
Diverticulitis is inflammation of an abnormal pouch (diverticulum) in the intestinal wall, usually found in the large intestine (colon). The presence of the pouches themselves is called diverticulosis.
Causes Small protruding sacs of the inner lining of the intestine (diverticulosis) can develop in any part of the intestine. They are most common in the colon, specifically the sigmoid colon. These sacs, called diverticula, occur with increasing frequency after the age of 40. When they become inflamed, the condition is known as diverticulitis. Diverticula are thought to develop as a result of high pressure or abnormal pressure distribution within the colon. High pressure exerted against the colon wall causes pouches of the intestinal lining to bulge outwards through small defects in the colon wall. Diverticulosis is very common, being found in more than half of Americans over age 60. Only a small percentage of these people will develop the complication of diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is caused by inflammation, or (sometimes) a small perforation within a diverticulum. If the perforation is large, stool in the colon can spill into the abdominal cavity, causing an abscess or peritonitis.

    DIVERTICULITIS
GENERAL INFORMATION: What is it? Diverticulitis (di-ver-tik-u-li-tis) is an infection of the small sac-like pouches in the muscle wall of the large bowel (colon). These sacs are called "diverticulae" (di-ver-tik-u-luh). BM or food that is not broken down can get trapped in the diverticula and cause swelling and pain. This infection may spread throughout your bowel. You can be very sick with diverticulitis. It is most common in people over age 60. Causes: It may not be known what causes diverticulitis. Diverticula that are blocked with BM may cause this problem. You may also not be eating enough fiber (roughage) in your diet. You may be at a higher risk of having diverticulitis if you are overweight. Signs and Symptoms: You may have any of the following signs and symptoms of diverticulitis.

    http://www.surgery.usc.edu/divisions/cr/diverticulitis.html
Diverticulitis Most people have small pouches in their colons that bulge out through weak spots. A pouch is called a diverticulum, and multiple pouches are called diverticula. This condition is called diverticulosis. When pouches become infected or inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis. The cause of this disease is unknown, but it is believed that the association of a diet not containing sufficient fiber which contributes to constipation, makes the muscles strain to move stool that is too hard, causing increased pressure in the colon. This pressure instigates the weak spots in the colon to bulge out and become diverticula. Symptoms for diverticulitis and diverticulosis differ. Most people with diverticulosis do not have any discomfort or symptoms. However, symptoms may include mild cramps, bloating, and constipation. The most common symptom of diverticulitis is abdominal pain, with tenderness around the left side of the lower abdomen. Diverticulitis can be a source of rectal bleeding. If an infection is the cause, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, cramping, and constipation may occur as well. The severity of symptoms depends on the extent of the infection and complications. Diverticulitis can lead to complications such as infections, perforations or tears, blockages, or bleeding. These complications always require treatment to prevent them from progressing and causing serious illness. Treatment may include open or laparoscopic surgery. A colostomy is infrequently needed unless it is an emergency.

Diverticula develop from pressure being exerted on naturally weak spots in the digestive tract over time. It most commonly occurs in the colon, although they may also be found all along the digestive tract. To have the pouches is not uncommon; nearly 50% of the American population over the age of 60 has them. This is called diverticulosis and it is not harmful. However, when it develops into diverticulitis, (i.e. the pouches become inflamed and infected) it causes severe pain, fever and nausea. Mild cases may be treated with rest, a change in your diet and antibiotics but surgery may be required to remove the infected portion of the colon in the most serious cases. Only approximately 10% of people with diverticulosis will ever go on to experience the inflammation and infection associated with diverticulitis. If you have diverticulitis, you can expect to feel a severe, sudden pain on the left side of the abdomen, much like appendicitis. Occasionally, a patient may have mild pain that becomes worse over several days, fluctuating in intensity. A few of the other common symptoms include abdominal tenderness on the left side of the lower abdomen, fever, nausea, bloating, chills, constipation or diarrhea. Diverticulitis is usually diagnosed when the patient experiences sharp pain and the severity can range from minor inflammation to a massive infection. Because it is a potentially serious health problem, see your doctor right away if you suspect you're experiencing an attack.

Originally Published: October 06, 2000 Dear Alice, I have diverticulitis. What can I eat, and what should I not eat? Thank you. Dear Reader, For those in need of a definition, diverticulosis is a condition that occurs when pouches or sacs are formed in the intestines. When these sacs become inflamed, it is then termed diverticul itis . The development of this disease is attributed to increased pressure in the intestinal tract. This pressure may occur, but is not limited to, when a person is constipated. The incidence of diverticul itis is greater in middle-aged and elderly folks. Epidemiological evidence suggests that diverticulosis occurs more often when people eat a highly refined, low fiber diet. Generally, if you're diagnosed with diverticulosis, a high fiber diet is key. Since fiber has the ability to absorb water and make stools bulky and soft, pressure on the intestinal tract decreases and waste products move along more quickly. High fiber cereals or unprocessed wheat bran, as well as plenty of fruits and veggies, are often recommended to be included in an eating plan. During a bout of diverticul itis , when you may be experiencing inflammation, a LOW fiber diet is advised, until it subsides. It's a good idea to see your health care provider if you're experiencing any pain or bleeding.
