Home Mental Health > Dissociative Identity Disorder Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder or MPD, is a psychiatric disorder in which a person switches between at least two personalities or identities. The American Psychiatric Association renamed the disease from Multiple Personality Disorder to Dissociative Identity Disorder in 1994. There is much controversy over this diagnosis with the psychiatric community splitting into two camps, those who believe it is a naturally occurring disorder and those who feel it is a learned behavior caused by therapy itself.

DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER
Dissociative Identity Disorder is a dissociative disorder, it is not schizophrenia. Dissociation is where the person removes, spaces out, denies, represses, depersonalises, or is amnesied during a situation. Dissociative Identity Disorder is the most extreme form of depersonalisation, where the person alters themselves to better cope with a stressful situation or thinking. The altered part can become many different things, for example; a protector, a child, happy, sad, etc. The person experiencing the alteration may not be aware that it has happened. Symptoms

    Definition
The dissociative disorders are a group of mental disorders that were first classified separately in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-III ) in 1980. DSM-IV (1994) defines the distinctive feature of dissociation as "... a disruption in the usually integrated functions of consciousness, memory, identity, or perception of the environment." All dissociative disorders are defined as causing significant interference with the patient's general functioning, including social relationships and employment. Description
In order to have a clear picture of these disorders, the reader should first understand dissociation. Dissociation is a mechanism that allows the mind to separate or compartmentalize certain memories or thoughts from normal consciousness. These split-off mental contents are not erased. They may resurface spontaneously or be triggered by objects or events in the person's environment. Dissociation is a process that occurs along a spectrum of severity. It does not necessarily mean that a person has a dissociative disorder or other mental illness. A mild degree of dissociation occurs with some physical stressors; people who have gone without sleep for a long period of time, have had "laughing gas" for dental surgery, or have been in a minor accident often have brief dissociative experiences. Another commonplace example of dissociation is a person becoming involved in a book or movie so completely that the surroundings or the passage of time are not noticed. Another example might be driving on the highway and taking several exits without noticing or remembering. Dissociation is related to

Dissociative Disorders Dissociative Disorders are characterized by a disturbance in the previously cohesive and unified functions of identity, memory, consciousness, and/or perception of the environment. Four types of Dissociative Disorders are recognized.
    • Dissociative Amnesia is a pervasive loss of memory of significant personal information. Dissociative Fugue is a sudden, unplanned excursion away from ones planned itinerary accompanied by either memory loss; or confusion about, loss of, or assumption of a new identity. Dissociative Identity Disorder was formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder. It is evidenced by two or more separate personalities or identities that control a persons consciousness at different times, with each being amnesic of the other/s. Depersonalization Disorder is evidenced by the sense of being separated from ones cognition's or body without an accompanying breakdown in reality testing.

SHATTERED IDENTITIES: "Malinchismo" as a Dissociative Identity Disorder Caused by Ritual Racial Abuse
    by
    Hector Carreon
    La Voz de Aztlan
November 30, 2000 The psychiatric literature is replete with references to the phenomena which professionals in the field have termed Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) caused by repetitive micro-traumas or ritual abuse usually inflicted in childhood. This article proposes that "Malinchismo" within our Mexican-American culture is caused by ritual racial abuse inflicted by the dominant "Anglo" culture during our children's early childhood development beginning in kindergarten. We have all heard references to "Vendidos, "Taco Tios" and "Coconuts" within our community and also of "Uncle Toms" and "House Niggers" from our Afro-American community but have we ever wondered or asked how these personality types come about? To understand how these personality types may come about, we can refer to recent history involving the Jews during their traumatic "Nazi Holocaust Period"! The German Jews had their own "Vendidos" and "House Niggers" called "Judenrat" and "Kapos". There were other "Vendido" Jews who served the Nazis! Concentration camps depended on the cooperation of the ultimate "Jewish House Niggers" to clamp down on the prisoners. Known as Kapos, these Jewish trustees carried out the will of the Nazi camp commandants and guards, and were often as brutal as their S.S. counterparts. After the war, the prosecution of Kapos as war criminals created an ethical dilemma which continues to this day.

An Introduction to Dissociative Identity Disorder as a Model for Distributed Subjectivity in Cyberspace Vernon Reed, ACTLab, U of Texas Introduction The concept of dissociation Multiple personalities Causes of Dissociative Identity Disorder ... A new kind of self
    Introduction
The very nature of cyberspace is acting as a sort of "universal solvent" to break up our long cherished notions of monolithic self and subjectivity. The ease with which we can take on new identities and new connectivities in the virtual domain implies a self which is multivalent, fluid and de-centered a self which often operates in parallel, in different modalities and different capacities. I propose that a model for this new, postmodern, postrationalist, cyberspatial self can be found in the cluster of psychological manifestations currently known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and formerly and more popularly as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD).
There is precedence for my proposal to use what is commonly seen as a form of mental illness as a ground for more fully realized being. Deleuze and Guattari put forth the ideal of the happy schizophrenic as a paradigm for dealing with our postmodern condition of existential free-fall (Deleuze and Guattari, 1977). Through a process of "schizo-analysis" they transform the concept of madness to one of primal creativity analogous to artistic creativity. This schizo-analysis is an essentially destructive process designed to break down the sorts of Modernist, totalizing institutions that Deleuze and Guattari see as oppressing and confining our true selves. The result is a nomadic, rootless self, free of family, belief and structure, and dedicated to relentless change.
