n. An acute infectious disease caused by the bacillus Corynebacterium diphtheriae, characterized by the production of a systemic toxin and the formation of a false membrane on the lining of the mucous membrane of the throat and other respiratory passages, causing difficulty in breathing, high fever, and weakness. The toxin is particularly harmful to the tissues of the heart and central nervous system. [New Latin diphthēria , from French diphth©rie , from Greek diphtherā , piece of hide, leather. It begins as a soreness of the throat with fever. The bacteria lodge in the mucous membranes of the throat, producing virulent toxins that destroy the tissue. The resultant formation of a tough gray membrane is one of the most dangerous aspects of diphtheria, since it can spread to the

Diphtheria is an acute bacterial disease that can infect the body in two areas: the throat (respiratory diphtheria) and the skin (skin or cutaneous diphtheria). A common childhood disease in the 1930s, a vaccine against diphtheria has made it very rare in the US and other developing countries today. What are the Symptoms of Diphtheria? respiratory diphtheria
When a person is infected with diphtheria, the bacterium usually multiplies in the throat, leading to the respiratory version of diphtheria. A membrane may form over the throat and tonsils, causing a sore throat. Other common symptoms of respiratory diphtheria may include:
  • breathing difficulty husky voice enlarged lymph glands increased heart rate
Persons may die from asphyxiation when the membrane obstructs breathing. Other complications of respiratory diphtheria are caused by the diphtheria toxin released in the blood, leading to heart failure.

http://ucatlas.ucsc.edu/health/diphtheria/diphtheria.html Diphtheria is a highly infectious disease that is spread from person to person through the inhalation of "respiratory droplets" produced from coughing or sneezing. An untreated person will remain contagious for two to three weeks. With treatment an infected person will be non-infectious within twenty-four hours. If a person is not immunized, they may be repeatedly infected with the disease (WHO, Factsheet 89). The disease is fatal between 5% and 10% of the time, even when properly treated. When infected persons are not treated the mortality rate is even higher (WHO). Immunization process involves at least three different injections of vaccine over a span of a year. Source: World Health Organization, 2002. As the maps show diphtheria has largely been eliminated over the past twenty years. However it is still prevalent in some regions, mainly eastern European former Soviet Bloc countries, as well as many countries in Africa. There was a sudden increase in the number of cases world wide in the 1990's, this was due to a "massive epidemic" in the former Soviet Union (WHO, Vaccine-Preventable Disease Monitoring System, 2002 global summary). "Since the 1990, outbreaks were also reported from Algeria, Iraq, Lao People's Republic, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Sudan, and Thailand" (WHO). By contrast in most Western nations, cases are rarely reported.

to download the Patient Education Brochure.
When your child is immunized against the following diseases, the risk of coming down with one is very low:
DIPHTHERIA causes a thick covering in the back of the throat. It can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure, and even death.
TETANUS (lockjaw) enters the body through cuts, scratches, or wounds in the skin. Tetanus can cause muscle stiffness, painful muscle spasms, seizures, and even death. The painful tightening of the jaw muscles can prevent a person from opening their mouth or swallowing.
PERTUSSIS (whooping cough) is a highly infectious illness that causes severe spells of coughing that may interfere with normal breathing. The coughing is often accompanied by a "whooping" sound, so pertussis is often called whooping cough. The cough may last for weeks. Pertussis can also cause pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, and even death.
