    MOVING PLATFORM POSTUROGAPHY TESTING
Timothy C. Hain, MD Please read our Return to Index Search this site Page last modified: September 11, 2004 Moving platform posturography (MVP), or posturography for short, is a method of quantifying balance (although the definition of balance can be tricky). It is most applicable in situations where balance needs to be followed quantitatively, to determine whether a disorder is getting better or worse, or the response to treatment. There are several commercial vendors of posturography equipment. The following link has pictures of several types of equipment
    Norms:
For the most useful variant of MVP, "sensory testing", there are 6 subtests, which normally are progressively more difficult. Three subtests are "sway referenced", meaning that pressure is used to control the pitch angle of the platform with the goal of keeping ankle angle constant. This is not possible, but it does distort ankle angle input. Sensory test scores ordinarily decline with age (Wolfson et al, 1992), reflecting the usual decline in balance with age. Repeated testing over 10 days may show a learning effect with better scores (Peterson et al, 2003).

Biomarkers of Huntington’s Disease Found in Blood 7/26/05
By performing genome-wide expression profiling on the blood of individuals with and without Huntington’s disease (HD), researchers identified 12 genetic biomarkers that, they say, correlate with various stages of the disease, from presymptomatic to symptomatic. They then found that these elevated mRNAs were greatly reduced in HD patients involved in a phase I dose-finding study of sodium phenylbutyrate, an HDAC inhibitor. The results of the study, [F. Borovecki, et al., PNAS , vol.102, pp.11023-11028 (2005)] they say, suggest that alterations in blood mRNAs may reflect disease mechanisms observed in the HD brain. The markers may also help in monitoring patient response to different drugs during clinical trials. “We used blood samples from patients and from controls even though we are dealing with brain disease,” says Dimitri Krainc, MD, PhD, assistant professor of neurobiology, Massachusetts General Institute for Neurological Disease, Charlestown, Mass., the study’s senior author. “We believe that changes may be detected in blood because the genetic mutation that is responsible for this disease is present in every cell of the body, including blood.” To see if the mutation of the HD gene causes any changes in blood, Krainc’s group used gene arrays. The researchers chose to use two different DNA microarray platforms. The first profiles were done using arrays from Affymetrix, Santa Clara, Calif. They then decided to use arrays from Amersham Biosciences, Piscataway, N.J., for high-throughput confirmation.

    SUMMARIES FOR PATIENTS
Health Outcomes of Patients Previously Treated for Lyme Disease
What is the problem and what is known about it so far?
Lyme disease is an infection caused by a bacterium carried by ticks. Some people worry that health problems, including arthritis, tiredness, mood disturbances, and memory disturbances, can develop in the years after the infection, even when patients were properly treated with antibiotics. However, few studies have looked to see how often these same problems are found in people without past Lyme disease compared with those who did have the disease.

    Ophthalmology Department at MEEI
The Infirmary offers a broad range of primary to tertiary ophthalmic services, such as eye exams, contact lens services, eyeglass exams, and cataract surgery. Primary adult ophthalmic care is provided for more than 20,000 patients each year through the Cataract Consultation and General Eye Service. Initial screening and diagnosis of many ophthalmic disorders, as well as pre- and post-operative management of cataract surgery patients, is provided by this service. Our pediatric service is busy with healthy children and patients with complicated eye disease. If appropriate, patients are referred for tertiary care to other Infirmary ophthalmic subspecialty areas, such as retina, glaucoma, cornea, pediatrics, vision rehabilitation, neuro-ophthalmology, eye pathology, ocular oncology, immunology, and oculoplastics. The Infirmary is the only facility in the country that provides genetic analysis of retinoblastoma. Our physician specialists at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary are board certified and perform a wide range of procedures, utilizing the latest technologies. If you want more details on services at the Infirmary, please look further in our web pages or call 617-573-4199.
