Sturge-Weber Syndrome Topic Tree Definition:
A congenital syndrome characterized by a port-wine nevus covering portions of the face and cranium (in the distribution of the ophthalmic division of the TRIGEMINAL NERVE) and angiomas of the meninges and choroid. Clinical manifestations include the onset of focal SEIZURES, progressive hemiparesis, GLAUCOMA, hemianopsia, and cognitive deficits in the first decade of life. By age two years, skull radiographs reveal "tramline calcifications" of the margins of the occipital and parietal lobes. Pathologically cortical neurons are replaced by glial tissue that undergoes calcification. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1018-9) Synonyms and Source Vocabularies:

Introduction
The Cornea Service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary was created in 1964 under the direction of Dr. Claes Dohlman. The cornea fellowship at MEEI was the first such program in the country to combine clinical and research activities. The MEEI cornea fellowship has graduated 147 fellows, 16 full-time academic chairs, 15 additional full professors in the United States, and 11 chairs of departments abroad. The primary goal of the MEEI Cornea Service Fellowship is to facilitate each fellow's development as a future academic leader in the field of cornea and external disease. Accordingly, the intellectual growth of a cornea fellow is marked by the development of diagnostic and medical/surgical skills pertaining to the entire spectrum of corneal and external disorders, as well as clinical and applied laboratory research. The Cornea Fellowship is a two year program. Each year, the fellow will spend six months in clinic and six months in research. The research component encompasses basic and clinical science with an emphasis on cornea and external disease.

Biomarkers of Huntington’s Disease Found in Blood 7/26/05
By performing genome-wide expression profiling on the blood of individuals with and without Huntington’s disease (HD), researchers identified 12 genetic biomarkers that, they say, correlate with various stages of the disease, from presymptomatic to symptomatic. They then found that these elevated mRNAs were greatly reduced in HD patients involved in a phase I dose-finding study of sodium phenylbutyrate, an HDAC inhibitor. The results of the study, [F. Borovecki, et al., PNAS , vol.102, pp.11023-11028 (2005)] they say, suggest that alterations in blood mRNAs may reflect disease mechanisms observed in the HD brain. The markers may also help in monitoring patient response to different drugs during clinical trials. “We used blood samples from patients and from controls even though we are dealing with brain disease,” says Dimitri Krainc, MD, PhD, assistant professor of neurobiology, Massachusetts General Institute for Neurological Disease, Charlestown, Mass., the study’s senior author. “We believe that changes may be detected in blood because the genetic mutation that is responsible for this disease is present in every cell of the body, including blood.” To see if the mutation of the HD gene causes any changes in blood, Krainc’s group used gene arrays. The researchers chose to use two different DNA microarray platforms. The first profiles were done using arrays from Affymetrix, Santa Clara, Calif. They then decided to use arrays from Amersham Biosciences, Piscataway, N.J., for high-throughput confirmation.

Most recent discussions of deflation seem to overlook the main dangers posed by a deflationary economy and appear to offer superficial solutions. L. Randall Wray and Dimitri B. Papadimitriou argue in this brief that, barring drastic changes in asset and output prices, deflation itself is not the main problem, but rather the recessionary conditions that sometimes give rise to deflation. Whether or not prices are falling, the proper remedy for a recession is the Keynesian one: government deficit spending, used to finance useful programs and tax cuts. These measures will reduce unemployment, increase growth, and relieve deflationary pressures. Download Info To download: If you experience problems downloading a file, check if you have the proper

MONDAY JULY COURTESY DAN J KROLL
Later, Edmund returned to the beach with Alex by his side. There, he promised Alex that no matter what the future held for them, they would face it together.
At The Valley Inn, Scott told Marian that he was having second thoughts about his revenge plot on Leo. Marian assured her stepson that he was doing the right thing because, after all, Leo was involved in the plot that had killed Stuart. Scott nodded and headed on his way. A few seconds later, Jack appeared tableside and Marian quickly invited him to join her. Jack accepted, but said that he could only stay for a short time because Erica would be joining him soon.

TUESDAY JULY COURTESY DAN J KROLL The thought of being used as a guinea pig for David's medical experimentation didn't exactly sit well with Dimitri. "Why should I pretend you're anything more [than a test case]?" David snapped. " I wasn't a very big fan of yours before you died the first time." Dimitri reluctantly agreed to honor David's request because he knew it was the only way David was going to go along with his plan to "vanish" from Pine Valley. Dimitri picked up the telephone and handed it to David, ordering him to phone Edmund and get the plan started.

Lou Gehrig's Disease
Ian Maclean Smith, M.D.
Emeritus Professor
Department of Internal Medicine
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

Creation Date: 1996
Last Revision Date: 1996
Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed Not only Lou Gehrig had this disease but also Vice President Henry Wallace, Dimitri Shostakovich and David Niven. Its name is amyotrophic (wasting of nerve cells controlling muscles) lateral (at the side of the spinal cord ) sclerosis (scarring) and is due to death of nerve cells that supply muscles usually for the limbs but sometimes in the mouth and throat. Its a progressive fatal nerve disease of unknown cause usually lasting less than 3 years. Twenty percent live over 5 years. An African American patient of mine, aged 66, first noted small local spontaneous muscle contractions easily visible through the skin of his forearm, a sign that the muscle was dying because its nerve supply had withered. Another man in his 50's (it's more common in men than women) had tiny tremors of his tongue. He was one of the 10% that have the disease run in their family. Often its weakness of one hand that is noted, then the other is affected. Later the toe catches on carpets. All four limbs are soon affected but there is no loss of sensation, mental ability, or bladder or bowel control. Weakness, incoordination, cramps and spasm develop with difficulty in using the hands for skilled movements, also with walking, speaking and swallowing. The final stages are often distressing for the patient and the family. With awareness and intellect unaffected, the victim is unable to speak, to swallow, or move purposefully. Then the patient has trouble breathing. Realistic choices have to be made about the use of "heroics" in an emergency and whether a respirator should be used.

Disease that Invades From the Mouth
by Angela Spivey and Jan McColm
These bacteria are nasty characters. Just listen to their names. Porphyromonas gingivalis. Campylobacter rectus. "They're constantly barraged with serum and white blood cells trying to kill them," says Steven Offenbacher, professor of periodontology in the School of Dentistry. "But they have adapted to survive in that habitat. They have evolved just like an organism that lives in a hot spring or the bottom of the ocean." That adaptation makes these bacteria hardy, and it makes them more able to spread. Periodontal disease begins when the bacteria in the sticky plaque on your teeth results in the gums becoming inflamed. That plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria stimulate inflammation, one of the body's first lines of defense. But if that inflammation continues, the tissues and bone supporting the teeth break down, and the gums and supporting bone can separate from the teeth. Dimitri Redon, a postdoctoral research fellow, works on a patient in UNC's GO Health Center. Is there a link between periodontal disease and heart disease? Photo by Steve Exum;
