General Discussion Sturge-Weber Syndrome is composed of three major symptoms. Excessive blood vessel growths (leptomeningeal angiomas) are accompanied by accumulations of calcium inside the brain, and seizures. Facial birth marks (nevus flammeus) appear usually on one side of the face. Angiomas similar to those found in the brain can develop inside the eye, often with secondary glaucoma. LW Falkinburg, ML Silver, MN Kay and J Stoll
825 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence 8, Rhode Island. Knowledge of the cerebral angiomas dates back to the middle of the Nineteenth Century, and one of the first publications on this subject was that of Luschka in 1854. Kalischer was the first to point out the association of skin nevi and hemangioma of the brain, and to confirm this association by necropsy. Shirmer first noted the association of facial nevus and congenital glaucoma. Sturge in 1879 presented the case of a 6 1/2-year-old girl, with pronounced right-sided facial nevus, right

E B O O K Electronic File * E-Book version sent via e-mail in 2 business days Pages Price $34.95(USD) ISBN Published Synopsis In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with Sturge-Weber syndrome is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so. Related Conditions/Synonyms Dimitri disease; encephalofacial angiomatosis; encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis; leptomeningeal angiomatosis; meningeal capillary angiomatosis; Sturge-Kalischer-Weber syndrome; Sturge-Weber phakomatosis

Hemispherectomy for Pediatric Catastrophic Epilepsy Hemispherectomy implies the surgical removal of one of the two cerebral hemispheres of the brain. The operation has a long neurosurgical history, being first performed in 1928 for the treatment of a malignant glioma. Applied to epilepsy in the 1950s, it remained popular until a 1966 report of superficial cerebral hemosiderosis occurring after anatomic hemispherectomy appeared in the literature. Soon, variations in the technique were developed to address these delayed hemorrhagic complications. Functional hemispherectomy is the most common type of hemispherectomy performed today, and many centers offer anatomic, functional, or some other variation of the hemispherectomy procedure.
