Digestive Disorders ~ IBS What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a name given to a group of symptoms (a syndrome) affecting the digestive tract. It is a disorder in which the intestinal tract does not work in an orderly fashion and is diagnosed after other diseases have been ruled out. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating and often diarrhea or constipation. Other names are irritable colon, spastic colon and "nervous stomach." IBS is one of the most common digestive disorders and affects some 22 million Americans. For unknown reasons IBS affects about twice as many women as men and begins most commonly in young adulthood, sometimes in adolescence. IBS is NOT life threatening and seldom leads to complications or cancer. IBS is a real disorder in which the intestine is overly sensitive to various stimuli such as foods, drugs (caffeine, tobacco, alcohol) and is influenced by your emotions and tension. What are symptoms of Irritable BowelSyndrome?

Digestive and Liver Disorders
Digestive disorders affecting infants and children range from simple problems that most children experience from time to time, such as vomiting or diarrhea, to more serious (and possibly life-threatening) birth defects such as tracheoesophageal fistula, or illnesses such as appendicitis.
Digestive and liver disorders can have significant effects on the health of a child. A healthy digestive system processes the foods and liquids that we eat, replenishing vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats that are vital for the body to function properly. Occasional vomiting or diarrhea may lead to dehydration, however, long-term problems with the digestive system and liver can deplete these important nutrients, causing malnutrition that affects a child's physical and mental growth and development.
Some digestive disorders, such as vomiting or diarrhea, may be effectively treated by your child's physician. Other times, your child's physician may refer you to a physician who specializes in children's digestive and liver disorders. This specialist is known as a Pediatric Gastroenterologist.

What is a risk factor? But, knowing your risk factors to any disease can help to guide you into the appropriate actions, including changing behaviors and being clinically monitored for the disease. Stomach Cancer What is stomach cancer?
Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is cancer that starts in any part of the stomach. The stomach is just one of many organs located in the abdomen, the area of the body between the chest and the pelvis. Among other organs found in the abdomen are the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and colon. It is important to differentiate among these organs, because cancers and other diseases that affect them present different symptoms and are treated differently. The American Cancer Society estimates that 21,700 Americans (13,400 men and 8,300 women) will be diagnosed with stomach cancer during 2001. Most people diagnosed with stomach cancer are in their 60s and 70s. What causes stomach cancer?

N-Z Each year 62 million Americans are diagnosed with digestive disorders, ranging from the occasional upset stomach to the more life-threatening colon cancer. They encompass disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Most digestive diseases are very complex, with subtle symptoms, and the causes of many remain unknown. They may be inherited or develop from multiple factors such as stress, fatigue, diet, or smoking. Abusing alcohol imposes the greatest risk for digestive diseases. Reaching a diagnosis requires a thorough and accurate medical history and physical examination. Some patients may need to undergo more extensive diagnostic evaluations, including laboratory tests, endoscopic procedures, and imaging techniques. Physicians who specialize in the treatment of digestive problems are called gastroenterologists.

Inside HealthHints....
Do you experience frequent heartburn? Are antacids becoming a weekly regimen? Do you have breathing difficulties or a cough that just won't go away? If so, you may be unknowingly suffering from a condition known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disorder, GER, or acid reflux, are all names used to describe a condition in which food, gastric acid, and digestive juices in the stomach splash up into the esophagus, or swallowing tube. This happens because the valve at the bottom of the esophagus just above the stomach (known as the lower esophageal sphincter or LES) sometimes opens at the wrong time. When the sensitive lining of the esophagus is exposed to acid from the stomach, symptoms result, ranging from mild inconveniences to severe debilitating problems (Pediatric/Adolescent Gastroesophageal Reflux Association, 1998b; Pleatman, 2001).
