The esophagus, located just behind the trachea, is about 10 to 13 inches in lengthand allows food to enter the stomach for digestion.
http://uuhsc.utah.edu/healthinfo/adult/digest/esophcan.htm
Esophageal Cancer What is esophageal cancer?
Esophageal cancer is cancer that develops in the esophagus, the muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. The esophagus, located just behind the trachea, is about 10 to 13 inches in length and allows food to enter the stomach for digestion. The wall of the esophagus is made up of several layers and cancers generally start from the inner layer and grow out. There are about 12,300 new cases of esophageal cancer each year. About 12,100 persons die from the disease each year. Other facts about esophageal cancer are:
  • Esophageal cancer is three times more common among men than among women.
Esophageal cancer is three times more common among African-Americans than among Caucasians.
Some countries such as Iran, northern China, India, and southern Africa have rates that are 10 to 100 times greater than that in the United States.
What causes esophageal cancer?
No one knows exactly what causes esophageal cancer. At the top of the esophagus is a muscle, called the sphincter, that releases to let food or liquid go through. The lower part of the esophagus is connected to the stomach. Another muscle is located at this connection that opens to allow the food to enter the stomach. This muscle also works to keep food and juices from the stomach from backing into the esophagus. When these juices do back up, reflux, commonly known as heartburn, occurs.

Digestive Disorders Home Page Diagnostic Procedures Digestive Disorders Colorectal Cancer Esophageal Cancer ... OHSU Digestive Health Center Each year, millions of Americans are diagnosed with digestive disorders, ranging from the occasional upset stomach to the more life-threatening colorectal cancer. They encompass disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Consider the following:
  • Sixty to 70 million persons are affected by all digestive diseases.
  • Thirteen percent of all hospitalizations are for digestive disorders.
  • Digestive disorders account for 50 million physician office visits per year.
  • Digestive disorders cost $107 billion - $87 billion in direct medical costs and $20 billion in indirect costs each year.
Most digestive diseases are very complex, with subtle symptoms, and the causes of many remain unknown. They may be inherited, or develop from multiple factors such as stress, fatigue, diet, or smoking. Abusing alcohol imposes the greatest risk for digestive diseases. Reaching a diagnosis requires a thorough and accurate medical history and physical examination. Some patients may need to undergo more extensive diagnostic evaluations, including laboratory tests, endoscopic procedures, and imaging techniques. Physicians who specialize in the treatment of digestive problems are called gastroenterologists.

The doctor can then select appropriate diagnostic procedures that help to confirm the diagnosis, determine the extent and severity of the disorder, and aid in planning treatment. Medical History and Physical Examination A doctor identifies symptoms by interviewing a person to obtain the medical history. The person is encouraged to describe symptoms in his own terms. The doctor can then ask specific questions to gain additional information. For example, in speaking with a person with abdominal pain, the doctor might first ask, "What is the pain like?" This question might be followed by questions like, "Does the pain get better after you eat?" or "Does the pain get worse when you bend over?"

Digestive Disorders
The Center for Digestive Disorders at Saint Mary's Hospital is a self-contained one-stop unit serving the needs of gastroenterology patients from throughout the area. Procedures at the center include routine colonoscopy screenings for the early detection and prevention of colon cancer and endoscopy to diagnose common digestive concerns, such as acid reflux and ulcers. The unit is conveniently located on the second floor of the main building of the hospital for a fully streamlined patient experience, from registration and check in to discharge. Twelve physicians and six registered nurses are active in the Center for Digestive Disorders at Saint Mary's. Because many procedures require patients to fast, exams begin as early as 7:30 a.m. to get patients in and out of the hospital early with minimal inconvenience or discomfort. The colonoscopy takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Most patients are on their way home within a couple of hours, after a short recuperation and a consultation with their doctor.
