Dercum's disease Dercum's disease is the formation of multiple fatty deposits in various sites. This is a rare disease that predominantly affects women over men in a ratio of 30:1. It is rare for this condition to affect women before the menopause. This condition may be familial but the majority of cases are sporadic. It is characterized by the formation of circumscribed painful adipose tissue deposits in the subcutaneous tissues of the extremities and other parts of the body. The most common site for the deposits is the knees. The size of lesions varies from 0.5 to 5 cm. Patients are often obese. The disease may be associated with emotional instability, fatigue, weakness and, very occasionally, dementia. Histological examination reveals no abnormalities of the adipose tissue. There is no fat necrosis as seen in panniculitis. Giant cell formations may be seen. There is no satisfactory treatment. It has been reported that intravenous lidocaine brought relief in two cases.

Dercums disease
What is Dercum's disease?
Morbus Dercum (Adiposis dolorosa) is a chronic disease with mild to intensive pain in the fatty tissue, fatigue and obesity as the most apparent symptoms. But the disease affects the entire body and can present a long list of symptoms. This disorder usually occurs in females between the ages of 25 and 60, but can début in all ages, as well as in younger people and amongst males. It is about 20 times more frequent in females than in males. Dercum's disease, was originally described in the medical literature in 1892 by the American doctor Frances Xavier Dercum.
Symptoms
Typical pain pattern
Other commonly symptom are:
  • Various areas of the body may swell for no apparent reason. The fingers becomes clumsy, you drop things and sometimes the fingers go numb.
  • Disturbed sleep, many have difficulties going to sleep because of the pain, but other forms of sleeping disorders also occur.
  • General fatigue, gets worse with even mild activity.
  • Tendency to become black and blue that seems to arise spontaneously or after alleviated blow.
  • Stiffness after resting especially in the mornings.

The story concludes Good evening every one, Well, you are going to have to be the judge of whether my news is "Good" news or "Bad" news. I can't seem to make up my mind one way or the other. Hey... I ought to just poll you all and tally up the votes and whatever gets the most votes is what I will call it. Hehehehe. Just kidding. ;) Ok... Dr. Baird the Dermatologist that presented me as a vexing case called me with the results. I apologize for not letting you know yesterday, but I was busy surfing the net trying to find out all that I could on the disease. Which was not much. In fact there were only 7 pages on the net that had info on it and most of them had one simple paragraph of few words about it. I'll put that info at the end of the page, but I'll tell you about the phone call from her first. The disease I have is extremely rare. It is called: Adiposis Dolorosa. It is also known as Dercum's Disease. It affects only over-weight people. Women are 99% affected with few men. It strikes in middle age. The tumors are not actual tumors as a Lipoma is, however they are made of the same thing; fat tissue. They are more deposits than tumors. The come on rapidly, grown rapidly and are extremely painful. Gee... does that sound like any one you know?

L ipomas are slow-growing, nearly always benign, adipose tumors that are most often found in the subcutaneous tissues. Most lipomas are asymptomatic, can be diagnosed with clinical examination (Table 1) and do not require treatment. These tumors may also be found in deeper tissues such as the intermuscular septa, the abdominal organs, the oral cavity, the internal auditory canal, the cerebellopontine angle and the thorax. Lipomas have been identified in all age groups but usually first appear between 40 and 60 years of age. Congenital lipomas have been observed in children. Some lipomas are believed to have developed following blunt trauma.

decklyduck There is a disease called Dercum's disease that is characterized by multiple painful lipomas. Not sure if this describes your husband's conditions, but it sounds like it. It has been associated with weakness, fatigue, emotional and cognitive changes in some cases, but fortunately there is no known association with other neurological signs/symptoms. Treatment is usually targeted towards pain relief rather than removal. Lidocaine ( a local anesthetic) can sometimes be helpful for very painful ones. There is a support group for patients and families with dercum's disease. However, I do not have any information on this. Perhaps you can try the internet.
In the case that this is not dercum's disease, lipomas themselves are not cancerous and do not necessitate surgical removal. There is a disease called liposarcomas which are fatty
malignant tumors, but you will have to see an internist or dermatologist for futher evaluation. The best kind of doctor for your husband is a derm surgeon. Good luck

Why I Cry at Weddings
Attic Man and I just returned from central PA for his sister's wedding. Everything was just perfect: the dress fit her like a glove, her hair and makeup (expertly applied by Kathleen) made her face glow, the flowers and dresses complemented each other beautifully, the food was delicious...Maura really knows how to plan an affair.
And her groom! He pronounced his vows with love, confidence, and sincerity. And like Attic Man just five years ago, I don't think I caught him without a smile the entire day.
Sster, on the other hand, was verklempt throughout the ceremony and frequently through the reception (they really have to stop writing those sappy mother/son, father/daughter songs, or I will not make it through the next wedding). I was able to supress the sobbing well enough not to disturb the ceremony (or perhaps sitting next to Anna in all of her choral glory did the trick), but I was a fountain from start to finish.
Maura and Mike will be happy, and Attic Man's cousin and her husband will be happy in their own unexpected way as well. I hope that Maura will not read this post as the usual telling of horror stories at the time of one's own significant life event. Or maybe it is; maybe weddings and the birth of babies and so forth cause us to stop and consider the labor of our own lives and the profound ways we are connected to one another, and maybe the only way we can manage to say this to each other is to say, "just wait until you go through X!" when really we should be saying something like
