This site references some articles dealing with dercum's disease, and provides synopses of them.

Background This is the most common benign soft tissue tumor of adults. They are sometimes multiple and usually painless and asymptomatic. Malignant transformation is virtually never seen. Angiolipoma is a common variant which has a proliferation of small vessels scattered throughout the fat. Unlike common lipomas, these tumors are usually painful. Department of Pathology, Stanford University Medical Center. J Am Acad Dermatol 2003 Jan;48(1):82-5 Abstract quote This case report describes a 48-year-old man with multiple spindle cell lipomas of the neck and a dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) with fibrosarcomatous transformation of the chest. The presence of familial and nonfamilial multiple spindle cell lipomas within a single patient is a rare event, with only two reports in the current literature.

Hi, my name is Pam AKA "Nunnie". I'm 50. I live with my husband, Rick . We moved from Oregon to Montana about 5 years ago. Rick has a lot of hobbies and interests. His main interest is aircraft, especially military aircraft. Take a look at his "Favorite Military Aircraft" pages. He has photos, information, and specs on his 10 favorite military aircraft. His main hobby is photography. Be sure and check out his "Wildlife Photography" pages where you will find some fantastic photos that he has taken of wildlife on our many travels around Oregon and Washington. Among them you will see deer, elk, numerous kinds of birds, etc. Please be patient, with so many photos the pages are a little slow to load. I have many hobbies and interests. But, my main interest is animals. Since moving to Montana we have purchased several horses. We are now breeding and raising registered Paint Horses. I have put up a quick web page on my horses for the time being. I will do a better one later on. You can check it out if you would like. The herd name is "Regal Paints" We have 2 cats. At the present time I have not made a page for them. I will probably do that this winter when I have more time. They are nothing special. Just something that we love. :)

How is a lipoma treated?
Edith Jones* remembers the day she first noticed a small, egg-shaped lump under her arm. Worried about breast cancer, she made an immediate appointment with her doctor. To her overwhelming relief, the lump turned out to be something called a lipoma, a noncancerous lump of fatty tissue. Over the next few years, however, she was less than pleased to find a dozen more lipomas cropping up on different parts of her body, including her chest, thighs, and upper arms. "I know that these run in my family," she says. "But I was still hoping to escape them." What is a lipoma? A lipoma is a round, moveable lump under the skin (they range from pea-sized to the size of an egg, or even larger sometimes). Technically, lipomas are a type of tumor, but don't be alarmed by the term they're benign, which means they aren't cancerous. Lipomas are typically small less than one inch in diameter but can grow much larger in some cases. They are soft to the touch and if you manipulate yours with your fingers you may notice that it moves around a bit. Lipomas grow in the layer of fatty tissue beneath the skin, most commonly on the chest, back, shoulders, neck, and upper arms and thighs. The good news is that a lipoma is likely to grow very slowly; the bad news is that if you have one lipoma you may develop several.

  • Long-term treatment with high doses of corticosteroids leads to the development of truncal obesity and focal fatty deposition. These deposits characteristically are located on the face, the nuchal and truncal areas, and episternally, as well as in the mediastinum and epicardium. We studied a patient with juxta-articular adiposis dolorosa who had L-tryptophan-associated eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome and was treated with high doses of prednisone. This is the first reported case of adiposis dolorosa occurring as a complication of corticosteroid treatment. Alterations of fat metabolism induced by corticosteroid excess may have played a role in the development of this unusual painful syndrome.
Adiposis dolorosa is an uncommon disorder of subcutaneous tissue that was first described by Dercum in 1892 at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. The understanding of this disease has not progressed very much in the past 98 years. It remains better understood as a clinical entity than as a physiologic or metabolic process.
