Geriatric Depression Scale This scale was developed as a basic screening measure for depression in older adults. We will consider this page to be under continuous development and try to keep translations of the scale available. Anyone with their own translation can submit it to me and we'll post it- when I get the chance given other responsibilites etc., etc..... : The original scale is in the public domain due to it being partly the result of Federal support. Neither I nor Dr. Brink keep up on every nuance of the scale. VERY NEW : We now have a great new page that allows you to do the 15-item GDS on the screen and copy the results down into your records. We provide no intepretation of results, but positive answers are highlighted for clinical follow-up. This service is provided to you by Drs. Wes Ashford and Anil Sharma of VA Palo Alto Health Care System: New Testing Page NEW : We now have a new video streaming page with extensive information on assessing suicidality. Look at the top of the page for information on the powerpoint and video on these topics. The basic references are: Brink TL, Yesavage JA, Lum O, Heersema P, Adey MB, Rose TL: Screening tests for geriatric depression.

Historical St. John's Wort Applications
The historical use of medical St. John's wort is well documented. Commencing 2400 years ago St. John's wort was used as a nerve tonic, a painkiller for arthritis, menstrual cramping, gastrointestinal problems (such as diarrhea, nausea . . . ) as well as ulcers.
The ancient Greeks and Romans used to treat many ailments, including sciatica and poisonous reptile bites as well as to ward against evil spirits, placing sprigs of the plant on statues of their Gods. In fact, the genus name Hypericum is from Greek and means "over an apparition" as the herb was once considered odiferous enough to cause evil spirits to depart.
There is even evidence that the American Indians used St. John's wort used it in the treatment of Tuberculosis and other breathing ailments.

is an ever increasing problem What are normal emotions? Depression is when you are "sadder than sad." It has been said that we live in the "Age of Anxiety." We also live in a time of depression. In American society so many people experience depression that it has been called the "common cold of emotional illness." About 5% of the population or 15 million people are depressed at any one time. About one in six people experience a significant depressive episode at some point in life. Depression is a definite problem with the elderly, but the age of onset is dropping and depression is showing up more and more in adolescents. Normal Emotions Life is filled a variety of experiences and depending upon life circumstances it is quite appropriate to be feeling any of a number of positive and negative emotions. Such emotional states include excitement, frustration, fear, happiness, anger, sadness, and joy with many more possibilities. All of these emotional states are normal reactions to specific life events. Even when they are experienced as unpleasant, they are normal reactions. These same emotions, however, can intensify into abnormal states if they become an overreaction to the circumstances. For example, if a store clerk is rude, you may respond with normal irritation and complain to the manager. If your irritation quickly escalates to anger and rage then you may create such a scene that you are now the rude and obnoxious person.
