Harvard Provost Says Involve Families in Treatment
Awareness of depression, new treatments, and research reached new highs in the 1990s, leading many to believe that an end to depression was in sight. But, many people with serious depression are still not getting treatment. Family and social issues have to be addressed in order to help these people, according to Dr. Steven Hyman, provost of Harvard University and former director of the National Institute of Mental Health. This was an excellent, non-threatening way to determine how many of our soldiers may be experiencing symptoms of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder." Deborah Manning and Yvonne Wilbanks

Premier provider of mental health screening programs Screening for Mental Health, Inc., (SMH) first introduced the concept of large-scale mental health screenings with National Depression Screening Day in 1991. SMH programs now include both in-person and online programs for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, alcohol problems, and suicide prevention. Programs are implemented by local clinicians at mental health facilities, hospitals, primary care offices, social service agencies, colleges/ universities, workplaces, and secondary schools. In 2004 alone, nearly 550,000 screenings were completed at some 10,000 facilities using SMH programs. For more information:

You Asked About... Adolescent Depression
Maurice Blackman, MB, FRCPC.
Clinical professor and director, division of child and adolescent psychiatry,
University of Alberta Hospitals, Edmonton, Alberta.
The Canadian Journal of CME May 1995
Adolescent Depression
The suicide rate for adolescents has increased more than 200% over the last decade. Recent studies have shown that greater than 20% of adolescents in the general population have emotional problems and one-third of adolescents attending psychiatric clinics suffer from depression. The majority of teenage depressions can be managed successfully by the primary care physician with the support of the family, says Maurice Blackman MB, FRCPC.
Depression has been considered to be the major psychiatric disease of the 20th century, affecting approximately eight million people in North America. Adults with psychiatric illness are 20 times more likely to die from accidents or suicide than adults without psychiatric disorder. Major depression, including bipolar affective disorder, often appears for the first time during the teenage years, and early recognition of these conditions will have profound effects on later morbidity and mortality.

This powerful short-term therapy is highly effective for a wide range of disorders including chronic pain, phobias, depression, stress, panic attacks, eating disorders and poor self-image. Research shows that EMDR Therapy is fast, safe and effective. EMDR does not involve the use of drugs or hypnosis. Disorders and Conditions > Depression in Children and Adolescents advertisement Depression in Children and Adolescents
A Fact Sheet for Physicians

Depressive disorders, which include major depressive disorder (unipolar depression), dysthymic disorder (chronic, mild depression), and bipolar disorder (manic-depression), can have far reaching effects on the functioning and adjustment of young people. Among both children and adolescents, depressive disorders confer an increased risk for illness and interpersonal and psychosocial difficulties that persist long after the depressive episode is resolved; in adolescents there is also an increased risk for substance abuse and suicidal behavior . Unfortunately, these disorders often go unrecognized by families and physicians alike. Signs of depressive disorders in young people often are viewed as normal mood swings typical of a particular developmental stage. In addition, health care professionals may be reluctant to prematurely "label" a young person with a mental illness diagnosis. Yet early diagnosis and treatment of depressive disorders are critical to healthy emotional, social, and behavioral development.
Although the scientific literature on treatment of children and adolescents with depression is far less extensive than that concerning adults, a number of studies-mostly conducted in the last four to five years-have confirmed the short-term efficacy and safety of treatments for depression in youth. Larger treatment trials are needed to determine which treatments work best for which youngsters, and studies are also needed, however, on how to best incorporate these treatments into primary care practice.

var site="s13depression" Welcome to my web page on America's Great Depression. Although most of the pages have some content or are nearly complete, this is still a work in progress. I've become fascinated with this period in history and am trying to learn as much as I can about it. I will be updating this page as I continue my readings. Please let me know what you think of it so far and if I've missed any important references (see links and books pages) I'd welcome a heads up on it. I'm mostly concentrating on the economics of this era but I'm not pushing a particular school of thought. I'll try to cover conflicting interpretations fairly. Also, for those of you working on term papers, history projects and so forth, I hope these pages help, but my time is limited so keep your expectations low if you decide to email me asking for additional information.

119. Den Kulturbetingede Depression
Artikel om hvorfor s¥ mange danskere er depressive. Fra Jobmagasinet.
http://www.textcon.dk/jobmagasinet/artikler/26kuldep.htm
Nr. 26 - januar 2001 DEN KULTURBETINGEDE DEPRESSION
