Dementia Overview
Dementia Overview
Dementia is a decline of reasoning, memory, and other mental abilities (the cognitive functions). This decline eventually impairs the ability to carry out everyday activities such as driving; household chores; and even personal care such as bathing, dressing, and feeding (often called activities of daily living, or ADLs).
  • Dementia is most common in elderly people; it used to be called senility and was considered a normal part of aging.
We now know that dementia is not a normal part of aging but is caused by a number of underlying medical conditions that can occur in both elderly and younger persons.
In some cases, dementia can be reversed with proper medical treatment. In others, it is permanent and usually gets worse over time.
About 4-5 million people in the United States have some degree of dementia, and that number will increase over the next few decades with the aging of the population.
  • Dementia affects about 1% of people aged 60-64 years and as many as 30-50% of people older than 85 years.

Dementia
Dementia is a broad term for a range of conditions that involve loss of mental ability and so causes problems with memory, language, behaviour and emotions. Dementia is most common in the elderly. Around five percent of people over the age of 65 are affected to some extent.
About dementia
Dementia is caused by problems in the way the brain works. The brain is made of billions of brain cells or 'neurones', through which electrical signals pass. Normally these cells signal to each other through narrow gaps (synapses) with the help of chemicals called 'neurotransmitters'. Dementia is caused by neurones not working properly or dying. This often changes the levels of different neurotransmitters, which affect the function of the brain. Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. It is different from the mild forgetfulness that can occur in the elderly.

Hi, my name is Sandy. I created this site to hopefully be of help to someone else who is suffering the same heartbreak that I did when my Mom (pictured above) was diagnosed with dementia. I will share my story in detail and include as much information about where to get help that I can find. I hope you find the info you seek as well as a little comfort here. Here's what's inside: Tributes To Victims Tributes To Caregivers Memorials: Loved Ones Lost In brief ... Mom was diagnosed in 1992, at first just being forgetful of little things, then bigger things such as leaving the stove on, etc. Slowly she also became aggressive, dilusional and eventually helpless. It was the hardest time in my life. My Mom passed away in May of 1997, after developing pneumonia from inactivity ... she had even forgotten how to walk ! While I would not force religion on anyone, I can only attest to the fact that faith in God and a belief in a better life after this one, is what helped me. I rest assured that my Mom is at peace now and free of her tormented thoughts. I hope you will seek faith also, in whatever higher power you believe in. They say God never gives us more than we can handle, and I guess it must be true, because I never would have thought I could cope with those 5 years. I hope you like this site and send it to anyone you know who has a friend or loved one with this most heartbreaking disease. Thanks !
