Before we can understand hearing loss, we must first understand what hearing entails. When we hear sounds, we really are interpreting patterns of movement of air molecules. We can describe sounds in terms of their frequency (or pitch) and intensity (or loudness). Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz). A person who has hearing within the normal range, can hear sounds that have frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hz. The most important sounds we hear every day are in the 250 to 6,000 Hz range. Speech includes a mix of low and high frequency sounds. Vowel sounds like “u” have low frequencies (250 to 1,000 Hz) and are usually easier to hear. Consonants like “s,” “h,” and “f” have higher frequencies (1,500 to 6,000 Hz) and are harder to hear. Consonants convey most of the meaning of what we say. Someone who cannot hear high-frequency sounds will have a hard time understanding speech. Intensity, or loudness, is measured in decibels (dB). A person with hearing within the normal range can hear sounds ranging from to 140 dB. A whisper is around 30 dB. Conversations are usually 45 to 50 dB. Sounds that are louder than 90 dB can be uncomfortable to hear. A loud rock concert might be as loud as 110 dB. Sounds that are 120 dB or louder can be painful and can result in temporary or permanent hearing loss.

Full size image available below Deafness Genes Hearing is one of the basic elements of human communication, yet millions of Americans are hearing impaired. Currently only a few strategies for overcoming the deficiency exist. For example, some people with a moderate case can overcome the impairment with hearing aids, which amplify sounds. Others bypass the communication setback with sign language. Researchers now hope that new findings on the genetic component of deafness will help expand treatment options. Painstaking analysis has led to the recent discovery of a large number of mutated genes that are involved in causing deafness in humans. An understanding of how these genes operate is helping researchers devise biological strategies to protect or restore human hearing. Nag. Nag. Nag. You shut the door to block out the rantings from the other room. Ahhh. Peace.
But what if the silence was endless? Many individuals spend life unable to detect nagging yells as well as romantic whispers, telephone chit chat and radio tunes because their hearing system is damaged. In fact, about 30 million Americans have moderate to severe hearing impairments.
Sometimes the impairment is triggered by an outside source. Toxic drugs, infections or booming noises louder than 90 decibels like a jet engine roar can injure a hearing system.

THE DALMATIAN DILEMMA
White Coat Colour and Deafness.
by
DR. BRUCE M CATTANACH
MRC Mammalian Genetics Unit, Harwell,
Oxfordshire OX11 0JJ, UK
Jour. Small Anim. Pract. 40: 193-200, 1999
The Dalmatian, despite the presence of its pigmented spots, is basically a white dog and, as a breed, is widely reported to have a notably high risk of deafness (Table 1)
Although the association of deafness with white coat colour has long been recognised, veterinary researchers have been perplexed by the inheritance of the deafness component. Thus, it has evident to all that hearing dogs when mated together can produce deaf pups, but it has also been found that deaf dogs mated together can produce hearing pups.
Variable sex differences in incidence of deafness have also been reported. As a consequence recessive, dominant, multi-factorial and even sex-linked inheritances have been postulated (see Greibrokk 1994; Anderson et al Despite this confusion it has been shown in studies conducted both in the UK and America that selective breeding for hearing dogs can reduce the incidence of deafness. This has been greatly facilitated by "BAER testing" (brain stem auditory-evoked response) which allows unilaterally affected dogs (deaf in only one ear) to be distinguished from totally normal animals.

Pendred Syndrome
What is Pendred syndrome? Pendred syndrome is an inherited syndrome which consists of deafness from the time of birth and enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) in the front of the neck. Pendred syndrome is a result of a defect in the production of the thyroid hormone, an essential hormone for normal body metabolism. Thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid gland. This gland is located in the lower part of the neck, below the Adam's apple. It is wrapped around the windpipe (trachea) and has the shape of a butterfly which is formed by two wings (lobes) and attached by a middle segment (isthmus). Thyroid hormones are essential for the function of every cell in the body. They help regulate growth and the rate of chemical reactions (metabolism) in the body. The features of Pendred syndrome are:
  • Inner ear: Deafness at birth; defect in balance (vestibular function); and malformation of a portion of the inner ear (cochlea);
