What is Dandy-Walker Syndrome?
Dandy-walker syndrome is a congenital malformation involving cerebellum and the cavity in the brain called fourth ventricle . The disease is characterized by the abnormal widening of fourth ventricle, one of the cavities which Central Nervous system fluid (liqour cerebri) takes place and congenital agenezis of vermis (mid-portion of both cerebellar hemispheres). And Consequently a cystic dilatation of fourth ventricle towards the posterior cranial fossa occurs. In addition a clinical situation known as hydrocephalus (increased CNS-fluid and abnormal enlargement of head cicumference) may be present.

DANDY WALKER Home Page About Dandy Walker: Dandy Walker is known by many names: Dandy Walker Syndrome, Dandy Walker Malformation, Dandy Walker Cyst, Dandy Walker Variant. By definition, Dandy Walker is a congenital brain malformation typically characterized by incomplete formation of the cerebellar vermis, dilation of the fourth ventricle, and enlargement of the posterior fossa. In layman's terms, Dandy Walker is a cyst in the cerebellum (typically symmetrical) that is involved with the fourth ventricle. This may interfere with the body's ability to drain cerebrospinal fluid from the brain, resulting in hydrocephalus. Dandy Walker cysts are formed during early embryonic development, while the brain forms. The cyst in the cerebellum typically has several blood vessels running through it connecting to the brain, thereby prohibiting surgical removal. In most cases the cause of Dandy Walker is not known, though there are a few known cases resulting from autosomal recessive genes. Dandy Walker is generally discovered before birth, by ultrasound. Symptoms in the newborn may include a bulge or lump on the back of the head ("bulging occiput"); a "hair collar", or patch of long hair just above this lump; red pigmented skin in the area of the lump (similar to a "stork bite" birthmark); increased head circumference (if hydrocephalus is present); a downward gaze (if hydrocephalus is present). Other symptoms of the syndrome can also include congenital heart problems; malformations of the face, fingers, or toes; other central nervous system structural anomalies (often agenesis of the corpus callosum); abnormal breathing patterns; motor delays; hypotonia; learning problems; mental retardation; high pain tolerance; seizures; reflux; nystagmus (jerky eyes); ataxia; and other complications.

  • What is the origin of the term, Dandy Walker syndrome? WHAT IS DANDY WALKER SYNDROME? Dandy Walker syndrome is a rare type of abnormality in the brain that is present from birth. There are two main abnormalities that characterize Dandy Walker Syndrome, which are described in the following paragraphs: The first main abnormality found in Dandy Walker Syndrome is the presence of a large cyst on the fourth ventricle which causes it to be grossly misshapen. A cyst is an abnormal lump, swelling, or sac that contains fluid, a part solid material, or a gas, and is covered with a membrane. A membrane is a thin layer of flexible tissue that covers something. Ventricles are openings in the brain that produce cerebrospinal fluid, which is the cushiony fluid that protects the brain and spine. There are several ventricles in the brain, pictured below: As you can see, the fourth ventricle is located in the back, bottom part of the brain. It connects the ventricles in the cerebrum (the upper part of the brain) through a narrow canal called the cerebral aqueduct. The cerebrospinal fluid comes through the fourth ventricle to bathe and cushion the outside of brain and spinal cord. In Dandy-Walker syndrome, the fourth ventricle (and other ventricles in the brain) becomes abnormally wide, which leads to an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the head known as hydrocephalus.
