http://www.thedoctorsdoctor.com/diseases/cyclic_vomiting_syndrome.htm
Background In 1994, the 1st International Symposium on Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome was held. Researchers there proposed relatively strict guidelines for the diagnosis of Cyclic Vomiting: 1. A child has recurrent, severe episodes of vomiting which may last for hours or days but have intervals of complete normal health in between vomiting episodes. 2. No other known cause of the vomiting. The reason for having these criteria is that there are children who have vomiting for unknown reasons but do not have normal healthy intervals in between episodes. These children may be vomiting every day or every other day as opposed to children with Cyclic Vomiting who tend to go for weeks without vomiting episodes. This disorder is also known as abdominal migraine . At the 2nd International Scientific Symposium on CVS in 1998, one of the major conclusions of the meeting was the recognition of the close relationship between CVS and migraine. Some children with CVS may evolve to classic migraine. Stress may be an important precipitant of vomiting for some children and psychological assessment and treatment may be helpful for children and families. During treatment of an acute episode of vomiting, close attention to the amount of fluid that is replaced is important as too much fluid as this may stimulate some of the chemicals which will perpetuate vomiting. It is important to ensure a good supply of sugar during this process.

Subject: Gallbladder removal to treat cyclic vomiting syndrome?
From To Post itsaholliday
My 17 year old son has suffered from cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) since he was a toddler. He has had all the standard tests to rule out other causes, the most recent being a HIDA scan of the gallbladder and biliary system. The scan showed normal structures, and no evidence of stones or obstructions, but a contraction rate of only 30%. He has never had RUQ pain associated with his vomiting episodes, nor at any other time. Nevertheless, his doctor has scheduled him for a cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal). My son is understandably willing to try anything that might resolve his CVS, but I question whether there is any reason to think this surgery will help. I am also concerned that he may have problems after the cholecystectomy, since he will have many years to live without the normal services of his gallbladder.
It seems to me that his doctor is just grasping at straws to find something that might help the CVS. However, I have searched the internet for many hours, and I can't find a single reference to link poor contraction rate of the gall bladder to CVS or vomiting, nor can I find any references that indicates cholecystectomy is in order when RUQ pain is not present, and the gall bladder has always been asymptomatic.

Summary: Children who suffer from the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome are often misdiagnosed. The illness is not very well known or understood. Imagine your child has an illness that's little known or understood. And, where they vomit almost constantly, for days on end. Multiply this by years, and you might imagine what people fact with a child with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome.
Rae Fry brings you this report.
Mary Tuder: I'm Mary Tuder; I've got a son, Tim, who's 17, who's had cyclical vomiting since he was six.
Tim Tuder: I think the first time I was at a friend's birthday party. I was outside, I felt a bit sick, so I went inside and sat on the couch, and I think I just started vomiting up on their couch, and that was how it all started.
Mary Tuder: He would lie in his bed, as white as a ghost, with big black sunken eyes, and I actually thought he was going to die. Nothing would stop his vomiting at all.
Tim Tuder: I just felt really, really bad, and because we didn't know what was going on, it was even worse.
Rae Fry: Tim Tuder is actually fairly lucky, because unlike most people, he was diagnosed with cyclic vomiting syndrome relatively early. The first time Tim was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth, the gastroenterologist on duty was Dr David Forbes. He'd been curious about cyclic vomiting since his days as a trainee paediatrician, so he recognised the patterns of the illness.

Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome
by Gary A Clark, myotherapist Cyclic vomiting syndrome may sometimes be caused by the 'belch button' - a little-known or undertood trigger point: It all started when Janet, the lady in question, had to undergo surgery to have fibroids removed. As she’d had abdominal surgery some years before the surgeon decided to re open the old scar down the linear alba, that is right down the middle of the abdomen. The operation went well, even though the fibroid was rather large, as the surgeon said afterwards almost as big as a football; still all went well until the third day into recovery. That is when the vomiting started, every thirty minutes, regardless of whether there was food in her stomach or not. Of course the first suspicion was that a piece of intestine was caught up on the wound closure, still x-rays showed nothing, neither did ultra sound, MRI, or any of the other tests they did, and still the vomiting continued round the clock. Her husband Frank was so concerned that he spent all his spare time with her, so much so that the ward sister set up a camp stretcher for him so he could sleep in her room.

Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Discussion
In cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS), people experience bouts or cycles of severe nausea and vomiting that last for hours or even days and alternate with longer periods of no symptoms. CVS occurs mostly in children, but the disorder can affect adults, too. CVS has no known cause. Each episode is similar to the previous ones. The episodes tend to start at about the same time of day, last the same length of time, and present the same symptoms at the same level of intensity. Although CVS can begin at any age in children and adults, it usually starts between the ages of 3 and 7. In adults, episodes tend to occur less often than they do in children, but they last longer. Furthermore, the events or situations that trigger episodes in adults cannot always be pinpointed as easily as they can in children.

gabbie Apr-07-05, 11:04 AM (CMT) "DD with Migranes and Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome" I am starting to really hate these migrane headache. They are taking over our life. My little girl is only 6 and has suffered 6 attacks since March 9,2005. She has seen a ped. gastro and all he did was run expensive test on and keeps increasing her elavil. Just recently I took her to a ped. neuro. he told me to stop her elavil if it was not working and he gave me a rx for Maxalt. She had another vomiting cycle yesterday at school. Somedays I just want to cry. When she is doubled over in pain and there is nothing I could do for her. Noboday will give me anything for the pain. I feel so helpless when she is having this attack. Has anybody been to a Chiropractic for this and had any luck. On my wit in, and just trying to find some kind of relief. Thanks Alert Edit Reply Reply With Quote ... Top
