What is Cushing’s syndrome?
Cushing’s syndrome is a condition in which there is an excess of cortisol (cortisone). This can be caused by drugs (e.g. prednisone, depo-medrol, dexamethasone, betamethasone) often prescribed for the treatment of many diseases; this syndrome is known as iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome. It can also be caused by an excess of the body’s own cortisol, caused by a pituitary tumor or adrenal tumor. Iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome is caused by administration of drugs that suppress the body’s own cortisol production. Clinical signs and complications are similar to the naturally occuring disease. The dog can become dependent upon the drugs with chronic use, and abrupt withdrawal can lead to signs related to lack of cortisol, such as lethargy, depression, vomiting, and diarrhea. For these reasons, chronic steroid use is not recommended except in cases of life-threatening immune-mediated disease or chemotherapy protocols. The lowest possible dose of steroids should be used for therapy. Pituitary dependent Cushing’s disease is caused by a functional pituitary tumor that stimulates the adrenal glands to produce excess cortisol. The tumor is usually microscopic and benign (a microadenoma). Sometimes the tumor can be large enough to cause pressure on the nerves to the eyes and the part of the brain called the hypothalamus, causing behavior changes, lack of appetite, and blindness, in addition to the other signs of Cushing’s syndrome. These tumors are known as macroadenomas. Pituitary-dependent Cushing’s disease makes up about 85% of spontaneous Cushing’s disease cases.

Cushing's Syndrome Cushing's syndrome is a debilitating endocrine disorder characterized by excessive cortisol levels in the blood which may be the result of a tumor of the pituitary gland, adrenal glands (located above the kidneys) or from tumors or cancer arising elsewhere in the body (ectopic ACTH producing tumors). Cushings disease refers specifically to excessive ACTH secretion by a pituitary tumor (also called pituitary adenoma). The cause of Cushings Syndrome is a pituitary adenoma in over 70% of adults and in approximately 60-70% of children and adolescents. Most pituitary ACTH-secreting adenomas are small in size (microadenomas). Overall, Cushings Disease is relatively rare, affecting 10 to 15 of every million people each year, and most commonly affects adults aged 20 to 50 years. Women account for over 70% of cases. Symptoms and signs of Cushings syndrome and disease may include:
  • Change in body habitus: weight gain in face (moon face), above the collar bone (supraclavicular) and on back of neck (buffalo hump)

All you can do is treat the symptoms to make the horse more comfortable, and an herbal approach shows great promise.

The symptoms of Cushing's syndrome, a common ailment of older horses, are so classical most vets skip the diagnostic tests. And we don't blame them. Not only are these tests expensive ($80-$100+), but they often return with negative or equivocal results.
There's no known cure for Cushing's, so veterinarians focus on treating these symptoms. Prescription drugs do show results and aren't a bad choice, but we've also found an herbal supplement that shows incredible promise.
What's Cushing's
Cushing's syndrome is a collection of clinical signs and symptoms that are the result of hormonal imbalances. These are caused by either overactivity of the pituitary gland or a tumor in the gland itself.
The hallmark of Cushing's is an abnormally long, thick, curly or coarse hair coat that does not shed in the spring, although there are other obvious symptoms (see box below).

Cushings syndrome - exogenous
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: Exogenous Cushing's syndrome is a form of Cushing's syndrome caused by administration of glucocorticoid (also called corticosteroid) hormones, such as prednisone. Alternative Names: Cushing's syndrome - corticosteroid induced; Corticosteroid-induced Cushing's syndrome; Iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Cushing's syndrome is named after the surgeon Harvey Cushing. It is a group of clinical signs and symptoms caused by a chronic excess of glucocorticoids, which are hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Glucocorticoids affect many body functions and are essential for survival, but when the level of these hormones is too high, it can cause serious problems. The most important glucocorticoid is the "stress hormone" cortisol. The pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain, regulates cortisol production by secreting a hormone called adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).

Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s Syndrome) What is Cushing’s syndrome? What are the clinical signs of Cushing’s syndrome?
There are many clinical signs that might be seen with Cushing’s syndrome. These include increased water consumption and urination, ravenous appetite, pot bellied appearance, thin skin, muscle wasting or weakness, ligament tears (commonly the cruciate ligaments of the knees), hair loss, panting, lethargy, recurrent urinary tract infections or neurological abnormalities. Many pets exhibit several of the listed clinical signs, but rarely does any one pet have all of the signs. Cats with Cushing’s syndrome are often diabetic and also have very thin skin that tears easily. How is Cushing’s syndrome diagnosed? How is Cushing’s Syndrome treated? Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication, which interferes with the production of cortisol. This medication is much more expensive than Mitotane and often less effective, but it is a viable alternative, especially in the short term if the pet requires surgery or if there is an adrenal tumor that is too large or invasive to be removed. L-Deprenyl (Anipryl) is another medication that might be recommended for some pets with pituitary dependent Cushing’s syndrome. This medication may help to alleviate some of the clinical signs by decreasing the amount of ACTH released from the pituitary gland. This medication hasn’t proven to be effective in all pets with pituitary disease and doesn’t suppress cortisol production like Lysodren does, but it has the benefit of being less toxic.
